You know how some people refer to Primark as Primarni?? Well......

DH is convinced that the word Primarni is a cross between Primark and Armani (as in Giorgio Armani, posh suits etc).

But I always thought it was a combination of Primark and Marni (fashionista favourite). Who is right?

(please say me)

The thing is, everyone I know pronounces Armani as 'ar-marni'

Not 'ar-mani' so either could be true

Pipbin · 21/02/2016 14:15

But it would be 'Primani' wouldn't it??!

Yes, but Armani is pronounced Ar-mar-ni not Ar-man-ee
I've never seen it written anyway.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/02/2016 14:15

Ah the old non-rhotic speaker defence Wink

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/02/2016 14:16

Maybe that's where my confusion arises from as I would say 'armahni'

Branleuse · 21/02/2016 14:17

your dh is right

OnlyLovers · 21/02/2016 14:17

I think it's Armani, just because Primarni has three syllables and so sounds more like Armani than Marni.

FannyFifer · 21/02/2016 14:18

I just call it Pennys. Grin

RudeElf · 21/02/2016 14:18

Yes, but Armani is pronounced Ar-mar-ni not Ar-man-ee

Only in some accents.

FannyFifer · 21/02/2016 14:18

Spelled Penneys though, gah!

RudeElf · 21/02/2016 14:19

Grin fanny

MrsRogerSterling · 21/02/2016 14:19

I always thought it was Marni.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/02/2016 14:19

Ha me too fanny

NameChangeEr · 21/02/2016 14:19

Armani, WTF is marni?

NoMilkNoSugar · 21/02/2016 14:21

Armani

SagaAndMartinsLiftConvos · 21/02/2016 14:21

I'm not into fashion at all, but I've heard of Marni and always assumed that that's what Primarni referred to.

imip · 21/02/2016 14:21

I always thought it was Armani, but actually Marni makes more sense given that it's more stylish...

nelliestar · 21/02/2016 14:22

Dh is right! But don't tell him! Grin

XiCi · 21/02/2016 14:26

Your Dh is right. The majority of people shopping at Primark will never have heard of Marni so it would make no sense for everyone to use a play on words that includes it. Everyone has heard of Armani hence the piss take comparing £1 throwaway tops and a designer brand.

niminypiminy · 21/02/2016 14:26

Definitely Marni - which IIRC super cool in fashion-land about the time when Primark was a new and exciting thing.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 21/02/2016 14:30

Armani - but only in the sense that of using Armani to represent 'high couture fashion' - and therefore when combined with Primark - is slightly sarcastic and tongue in cheek. The designers at Primark rip off just about very fashion house.

TheFridgePickersKnickers · 21/02/2016 14:31

Who the fuck is Marni?

I just assumed it was blended with Armani but to be fair I'm usually last to the party with this kind of thing.

Cerseirys · 21/02/2016 14:34

I assumed Armani too. In a similar vein, Target in Australia is often pronounced French-style with a silent t at the end!

CointreauVersial · 21/02/2016 14:34

Well, there are enough of you thinking I'm right, so I don't have to hand it to DH as a total victory even though he's clearly winning on numbers, dammit
