You know how some people refer to Primark as Primarni?? Well......

DH is convinced that the word Primarni is a cross between Primark and Armani (as in Giorgio Armani, posh suits etc).

But I always thought it was a combination of Primark and Marni (fashionista favourite). Who is right?

(please say me)

Can someone contact urban dictionary and set them straight then?

Well, what a heated debate! Wink It is indeed a very serious matter, eh Nugget? Thanks all...

I think I can safely consider myself to be right on this occasion as I am always while DH has clearly picked up on some random Armani reinterpretation of the original word.

I'm off to post a question about my holiday on the Travel board. If I can get 156 posts on that subject I shall be delighted.

Where I used to work we also used to say we were wearing Alain (Mat-Alain i.e. Matalan) and Oh-neh (Mark Oh-neh i.e. Mark one).

We made those up, so don't go telling me I am wrong about the origins of them as well!!

"Target in Australia is often pronounced French-style with a silent t at the end!"
In the US as well. It's Tar-jzay not Tar-gett. Although I don't hear it as often as I used to.

I'm with Nugget, only I think it's funny, and getting funnier. Not that it'll make any difference, but I think quite a few of us remember the fashion journalist articles at the time, the references to the Marni collection and the term being coined.

It's definitely Armani.

If it was Marni it would be 'primarkmarni'

Ah I'm not really Majestic I just have been following it and am amused by how the sensible explanatory posts have been ignored as far as I can see. Just wondering have people RTFT.

Nugget is it possible you might be taking the thread too seriously?

It always reminds me of poor Raquel from Corrie going on a photoshoot at "R Marney's". It was a green grocers or something Grin

Lady I always understood it as a joke too. Cheap pretending to be posh. Ditto Pradamark and Primarche (with obligatory Fr accent). Made desirable by catwalk knock-off turnarounds and "you'll never believe how much/little this was". Nothing really to do with design similarities, more the opposite really. I think that's how most people understood it anyway (Primark + Armani).

I can see that some of the designs did in fact knock off Marni, but Primark knocks off everything high end to high street, doesn't it.

I still don't think it's Marni tbh and I have read (most of) the thread. Not because it doesn't make sense for it to be Marni, I'm sure it does if you're in the know about fashion and the product range in Primark. I just don't think that much thought went into it. I think it's more likely it is an ironic mix of an upmarket label with a low cost fashion brand. A bit of fun.

Speaking of which, this thread started out as lighthearted and has gone all Hmm. Maybe we can just agree to disagree instead of trying to prove who is right / wrong. It's gone a bit sour.

I love the way numerous posters have explained why it is Marni and the link to the specific collection and just because lots of uninformed people think it's Armani because they've never heard of Marni doesn't mean it is etc. and yet posters are still saying NO! It's Armani Hmm

urban dictionary definition...

A name for the discount clothing store Primark, derived from combining Armani with Primark to make an ironic word which indicates just how un-designery Primarky is. First heard on TV by Sugar Rush actress Olivia Hallinan.

Definitely marni not armani - i believe the term primarni only came about because primark knocked off a particularly successful marni collection?

Same in Ireland Ginger it's Armanny, Primanny and MaRni. Primark is an Irish brand so it must be right

It's Armani.
I say Primark like pry not pree.
If you say Pree-mark then Marni might more sense.
But it rhymes with Armani. Primarni.
