Do I need to move on from skinny jeans??

There have probably been threads like this already but....

I am hitting the shops tomorrow(ie. Zara) for my annual wardrobe top up. I NEVER shop. I am a country bumpkin and I work from home, I live in 3 pairs of different coloured skinny jeans from Zara, have one "going out" pair of Maison Scotch skinny jeans, with a few tops and jumpers, one pair of heeled ankle boots and one pair of knee high boots + trainers.

I am getting the feeling that I should not be buying more skinnies tomorrow. That the world has moved on. But I don't know if I can bring myself to buy bootcut or wide leg or mid calf trousers. I've only just packed away the bootlegs from the early 00s a few years ago!

What style do I buy that I can wear day in day out that doesn't look about 5 years behind everything? Or do I stick to skinnies cos I like them?

They might be over for people who don't look good in them. For people who do (and we tend to look like shit in anything else) they will never be over. I don't mind wearing boyfriend jeans in warm/hot weather but I am well aware that they look a bit like clown trousers on me.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/01/2016 16:06

Agree with the majority here, I love skinnies!
However, I tried on some dark skinny flares in TKmax (tight on leg with flare from mid ankle) and thought they'd look great with white plimsoles in the summer. It's good to wear a few different shapes. I'm gutted I didn't buy them now as our Tkmax is like a jumble sale and I'll never find them again Sad

Cantseetheforest · 27/01/2016 16:08

Mid ankle? Trying and failing to picture that.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/01/2016 16:30

Grin sorry cantseetheforest I meant mid calf! Unless you have v. long ankles.

Kizzyjudy2014 · 27/01/2016 16:45

I'm over skinnies. I'm bored of sausage legs, bored of Lycra.

Today I'm wearing straight legs with a turn up so they're cropped. I also have a pair of wide leg high waist jeans, and am planning a pair of high waist wide leg cropped jeans.

It's time for new shapes, I reckon.

BirdyArms · 27/01/2016 18:09

I think maybe today is the actual day that they are over, I have been wondering about this all day and having just seen this thread I now think it's official. Definitely the fashion mums at school have stopped wearing them (quite a few mums at school work in fashion so they are ahead of the normal folk).

I have mixed feelings, they are all I have in my wardrobe but not sure that they are really the most flattering for my pear-shaped frame. I had a very quick look in the shops today and most of what they have is still skinny. I tried one non-skinny pair on (in the wrong size and was late for dc so didn't have time to try the right size) and thought I looked a bit odd. But I am going to have another proper look, I think non-skinny is the way forward.

burnishedsilver · 27/01/2016 18:28

Agreed birdy.
I'm tempted to pack up a box of skinny jeans for the attic this evening Grin

dudsville · 27/01/2016 18:38

I'm always a few years behind trends. I bought my first skinnies in 2015. When I like about them is that the fabric is so light weight. Mine are only 3% elastine so they hold their shape well and don't bag or sag. Like others have said, they're great for being quick drying and for pairing with loads of different kinds of foot wear.

I will say this though, and I know there will be an S&B deep intake of breath - I think they are a bit like leggings only with some structure that enables them to be dressed differently and more nicely.

Tanaqui · 27/01/2016 18:39

Fairy Dust I love that you said that! I too look carrot legged in skinnies, but was fine in leggings! I am wearing slim/straight at the moment but wish a true straight would come back in. (Also I have to say that I secretly think about 80% of people in skinnies look like they are ice cream cones, so am still mystified as to how come they have been so in! Perhaps I have no fashion eye).

73dexter · 27/01/2016 18:45

I'm never quite sure why people think the shape of legs should be disguised. All legs are wider at the top than at the bottom so look carrot/parsnip/ice cream cone shaped! Why is that a bad thing?

Cantseetheforest · 27/01/2016 19:21

I'd like to know (genuinely) what else I can wear with my lovely knee high brown boots? I was tucking my wider legged jeans into them but it made me baggy-kneed. I wear them with tights and skirts/dresses as well.

I literally bought my first pair of skinny jeans a week or two ago!! I will continue to wear them for a while. :)

Ledkr · 27/01/2016 20:49

It's shoes that I struggle with when wearing jeans. I simply don't know what to wear with anything but skinnies.

I wore my first pair of skinnies on a night out 17/18 years ago (yikes) and have never looked back. I can't ever see myself in boot cuts, the correct shoe/boot dilemma is too difficult.

I think what we'll see is a skinny/straighter/softer leg coming out, less ultra-skintight.

Did you have a good shopping trip?

tootsietoo · 27/01/2016 23:05

Yes thank you, sneaked in a quick hour again today on my way to and from appointments and got 3 fab jumpers from a little boutique place, to add to yesterday's haul. Wardrobe is now thoroughly sorted after 2 evenings hard work trying on and folding and I have a huge pile of stuff for DD1 (who is nearly my size) and charity shop. I found 2 good old pairs of boot cuts and I did quite like them on. They'd be ok with converse or similar.

I have also packed up quite a lot of stuff to keep in boxes for the future. I learned a while back not to chuck good stuff - I had a pair of stretchy Joseph trousers with sequins down the side once (bought in '98 I think) and I got rid of them when wider legs came in and I stopped wearing them. So gutted, I would have worn them to death over the past 10 years.

Liking your new jean ideas niminy piminy.

I'm short and pear shaped and skinnies give me option of wearing boots with a good chunky sole for that precious extra inch. What shoes do you wear with boyfriend jeans? I can only think of plimsolls, which are not a ood look on me

GreenPetal94 · 27/01/2016 23:16

whether you should buy skinnies depends if you are skinny. I am not and they look awful on me so have never bought any.

FairyDustDreamer · 28/01/2016 06:30

Maybe I will try again with skinnies but I predict whipping them off quickly in the changing room!
My knees seem prominent somehow and despite being slim, I do feel sausage like....

ginorwine · 28/01/2016 08:02

Ledkr
When I wore wider bottomed jeans I wore flat boots inside them or converse - I actually found it easier that with skinnies .im small and skinnies unless slightly rolled up in spring with ballet flats it converse seem to cut me up and make my legs look shorter .
Please do you or anyone else know what footwear goes with straight or skinny jeans ? I can't wear heels and I don't like boots with buckles etc .

Floisme · 28/01/2016 08:36

Dexter I think you're right that 'carrot shape' doesn't really nail it. I don't think it's the shape as such, it's the skin tight fit: totally unforgiving and leaves you with nowhere to hide.

I think of skinnies in the same way I think of bodycon dresses - fabulous if you've got the body but most of us haven't.

That's not why I think they're on their way out but it's why I won't be sad to see them go. (Except when it rains.)

sephineee · 28/01/2016 08:54

Bootcut/flares take me back to late teens/early twenties and I do NOT want to go back there.

Skinnies are ok on my shape and show off my beloved ankle boots amazingly.

Boyfriend jeans put about 4 stone on me in a second.

Prayingforsnow · 28/01/2016 09:03

I just saw a picture of Cheryl Versini in a pair of white flares with high wedges, looked quite nice actually, and Nicola Roberts in ripped skinnies. Maybe anything goes at the moment.
