Do I need to move on from skinny jeans??

There have probably been threads like this already but....

I am hitting the shops tomorrow(ie. Zara) for my annual wardrobe top up. I NEVER shop. I am a country bumpkin and I work from home, I live in 3 pairs of different coloured skinny jeans from Zara, have one "going out" pair of Maison Scotch skinny jeans, with a few tops and jumpers, one pair of heeled ankle boots and one pair of knee high boots + trainers.

I am getting the feeling that I should not be buying more skinnies tomorrow. That the world has moved on. But I don't know if I can bring myself to buy bootcut or wide leg or mid calf trousers. I've only just packed away the bootlegs from the early 00s a few years ago!

What style do I buy that I can wear day in day out that doesn't look about 5 years behind everything? Or do I stick to skinnies cos I like them?

This thread has reminded me that I have a pair of Joe's Jeans wide/legged flares in the wardrobe from a good few years ago - glad I kept hold of them!

But what footwear do you wear on a cold and drizzly January evening with wide legged / flared jeans?

This kind of boot would look crap wouldn't it? www.mintvelvet.co.uk/black-stella-nubuck-ankle-boot/boots-&-shoes/mint-v/fcp-product/4988?gclid=CJCq1b3GzMoCFSfkwgodkeIENA

I can't stand high waisted trousers. Or, indeed, skirts (not that I wear skirts, much). The waists are never small enough, there's always an unsightly gap. I much prefer hipster or low slung garments that can find their own level and slip down until they find somewhere to rest that actually, you know, fits the space available.

I think it would be good if mainstream highstreet shops had more choices for people with a variety of body types though, that can only be a good thing.

Annarose2014 · 28/01/2016 13:04

Straight leg are best on those of us with Wayne Rooney calves. They basically look like relaxed skinnies as we fill out the calf area fairly well.

Whereas in skinnies I always feel like a 18th century footman who's padding his calves with Cotton Wool!

Bootcut/flares only look great on tall thin people. I'm short and can only wear this type with high heels, which is a problem as I have a no-shoe-in-the-house policy and have a dog which needs to be walked, so no heels then.

I do have a great pair for evenings which I wear with high heels and a shrunken jumper and this style looks great then, but not for general daytime walking around.

boot cuts/flares on shorties with flats make us look even shorter and wider - no thanks.

Oh God I hope they are in their way out. I am 5ft5 but curvy with short legs and skinny jeans look terrible on me. So much so that I wear skirts a lot in the winter with chunky boots and finally breathe a sigh of relief when I can embrace the boyfriend Jean in the summer

Foxedme · 28/01/2016 13:17

Same here!!! But with fat knees too Sad

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 14:32

It's interesting that people say bootcuts aren't flattering.

I don't necessarily disagree - but what's 'flattering' is dictated by fashion. It should be objective - either something is flattering or it's not - but it doesn't seem to work that way.

When bootcuts were in, everyone said how flattering they were. They 'elongated the leg' and 'balanced out a wide hip'. And it took most mere mortals a long time to get on board with skinnies because they were so unflattering on the average (non-skinny, stumpy) leg.

The fact is, most skinnies long amazing on the models on store websites. But much less so on real life people walking down the street.

They aren't actually all that flattering on most people - but the look is so ingrained that our eye tell us they look good/flattering. The same way people's eyes told them, I dunno ... avocado bathroom suits looked good in the 70s, or bright yellow internal walls looked good in the 90s. They really don't, it's just what's in fashion dictating our perception.

I'm inclined to agree that they're starting to look dated - but, where to from here - there's only some many shapes you can conjure up when it comes to trousers, and we've basically run the gamut!

UhtredRagnorsson · 28/01/2016 14:34

Everyone did not say 'how flattering' bootcuts were, when they were in. Small slender people did not say they were flattering. Because they aren't. They swamp people with my body type and make us look like clowns.

UhtredRagnorsson · 28/01/2016 14:35

I do agree that skinny jeans don't look good on most people though. There is a difference between looking good and confirming to a style rule.

Lambzig · 28/01/2016 14:43

I am definitely over skinny jeans.

I want some real denim. All cotton thick denim with no lycra that you have to force yourself into, but never bag. I have been thinking about trying some 501s. I think we have all just for a bit too used to jeans that give all the time.

Agree that 'other' jeans are easier to style in summer.

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 14:45

Some small slender people did - Victoria Beckham and Rachel Stevens seemed to live in them back in the day.

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 14:46

Absolutely agree about wanting real denim with no Lycra. Where are these jeans?!

Is it only Levis?

UhtredRagnorsson · 28/01/2016 14:48

Victoria Beckham isn't small. She's 5'4" (according to the internet). But she often looks like she is swamped by her clothes, it's true. Dunno about Rachel Stevens. I only know who she is from strictly (she was robbed, robbed I say).

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/01/2016 14:55

5'4" is small to me! I passed her at the airport once, and she was tiny - I mean, minute! Seemed much smaller than 5'4". Either way, when I think of bootcuts it's those two I think of, especially.

They both specialised in super long, skintight legs with a boot cut flare over uber-pointy shoes/boots that you could only just see at the bottom of the material.

UhtredRagnorsson · 28/01/2016 14:57

I'd love to be 5'4" :(

CrystalMcPistol · 28/01/2016 14:57

I'd be more than open to the idea of wearing bootcut jeans again. But of course I'll call it the skinny flare.

ouryve · 28/01/2016 15:00

I'll be sticking with skinnies for as long as it's possible to buy them. Nothing else tucks into your boots in the rain and snow in quite the same way.

Boot cut may be fine in texas, but are horrid and impractical, here.

Mominatrix · 28/01/2016 15:01

Victoria beckham wore/wears flares with platform stilettos. tgey would look completely different with normal shoes.

badg3r · 28/01/2016 15:06

I bought a pair of straight leg jeans a few weeks ago. They're a bit bf cut on. I LOVE them. Having spent the last decade in skinny jeans I feel so comfy! I have literally worn them every day since I bought them. It freaks me out a bit though that I can't tuck them into my boots!

CrystalMcPistol · 28/01/2016 15:09

Straight leg jeans are fantabulous.

LovelyFriend · 28/01/2016 15:18

I've worn straight leg jeans for several years now.
XP got me to change to them from bootlegs. He was a twat, but he has great style :) and he was right about the jeans.

I've never looked back.

Was recently given some skinnies and I do wear them occasionally with certain tops, but straights are my "go to's"

fresta · 28/01/2016 15:25

I think it's time to bring back the 501s! I LOVED them in the 90s.

OneofTHOSEWomen · 28/01/2016 16:04

I'm with Dowager on this. I remember buying my first skinnies because I really wanted to wear the boots tucked into skinnies look but just thinking they looked totally wrong with the rest of my clothes. My bum felt exposed, my shoes, other than the boots, were wrong, my tops were too short. This was 10 years ago, am quite bored of skinnies now and am willing to try something else, even if it means having to buy new shoes and tops to ale it work.

fresta · 28/01/2016 16:18

I always wore chunky lace up kickers with 501s, not sure I would be ready to go back to that look now though, the shoes would have to be different. The good think about a slight flare is that it looks good with heels without being tarty like skinnies.

ouryve · 28/01/2016 16:40

Chunky lace up knickers? Shock
