Do I need to move on from skinny jeans??

There have probably been threads like this already but....

I am hitting the shops tomorrow(ie. Zara) for my annual wardrobe top up. I NEVER shop. I am a country bumpkin and I work from home, I live in 3 pairs of different coloured skinny jeans from Zara, have one "going out" pair of Maison Scotch skinny jeans, with a few tops and jumpers, one pair of heeled ankle boots and one pair of knee high boots + trainers.

I am getting the feeling that I should not be buying more skinnies tomorrow. That the world has moved on. But I don't know if I can bring myself to buy bootcut or wide leg or mid calf trousers. I've only just packed away the bootlegs from the early 00s a few years ago!

What style do I buy that I can wear day in day out that doesn't look about 5 years behind everything? Or do I stick to skinnies cos I like them?

Skinnies still the staple despite fashion's efforts to force us into spending more money on bootcuts/flares etc. I like boyfriend jeans too.

ChoclolateOrange · 26/01/2016 11:16

I like Gap girlfriend as a change from my skinnies. The cut is more fitted than boyfriend. They have the advantage of a narrow bottom which means they go into boots, wellies and look good with ankle boots too.

It's nice not to have to wriggle into them as well.

They always show them as rolled up on the website but I only do that in summer.

I am definitely still a skinnies person and will be for a long time! They look flattering on me and are easy to dress up or down. Bootcut work for me too but it's harder to compliment them properly. I am 5'1" so flares can be a total minefield!

tootsietoo · 26/01/2016 23:02

Well Zara was stacked up high with them, so I have one more pair. Stupidly ran out of time so I had a mad dash round and didn't manage to get as much as I wanted. Tried boyfriend jeans but they just make me look dumpy so can't go there. now having a HUGE wardrobe clear out, there is some ancient stuff hanging in there! Hopefully will unearth some more wearable things.

It was interesting going round in the sales. Shops like gap had racks full of flares/bootcut that no one was buying.
Must go to Zara again this weekend. I'm having wardrobe cull too. I did notice last time I was in Zara that it too has gone for the vanity sizing thing. I always used to be a medium in Zara.I haven't changed size, if anythingI am a tad larger and now I am small and extra small!

AuntieStella · 27/01/2016 07:40

I prefer skinnies to any other jeans shape, and so will keep buying them.

I hardly bought any jeans in the 90/00s because the fashion industry offered so little choice then.

I think I bought maybe one pair of straight leg, after despairing of the rows and rows of hideously unflattering boot cut. Flares even worse.

Floisme · 27/01/2016 07:59

I think it'll change slowly. But I have to say I'm beginning to look at skinnies the way I looked at them 10 or 12 years ago. I'm wearing some today with a V-neck, slouchy top - I've worn them together loads of times but today I feel a bit like I'm in panto.

I'm hardly a hard core fashionista so if people like me are starting to feel like this then I think the momentum must be changing.

It took a few years for skinnies to take hold so I imagine they'll be around for a while yet and it goes without saying that anyone who likes them should carry on wearing them. But I for one am pleased to see something different and a bit more choice.

burnishedsilver · 27/01/2016 09:02

I feel the same floisme. Skinnies feel dated. I'm ready for a change. Boyfriend jeans don't suit me. I hate flares. I've been easing myself out of skinnies with Gap Girlfriend jeans. I'm ready to go for it....I'm going to buy boot cuts.

LovelyFriend · 27/01/2016 11:48

I've just started wearing them so yes they are probably over :)

BadgersBum · 27/01/2016 11:48

I feel like I'm getting to old (and fat) to follow trouser shape fashion, so will just keep going on what fits my shape best. I think the worst jean trend that could be revisited is 'when your mum used to iron a crease down the front'.

knowler · 27/01/2016 12:50

I like the look of the Gap Girlfriends and when I get paid this Friday for the first time in about 10 million years (ok, since 2 weeks before xmas) I'm going to give them a whirl.

diddl · 27/01/2016 12:54

I've only just found some that I really like, so no way I'm giving them up.

Where what you like & what you feel comfortable in-that never dates for me!

OnlyLovers · 27/01/2016 12:54

God, I hope not! I love them. I can't stand the idea of wearing boot cuts now, and I don't even understand what 'boyfriend jeans' means.

diddl · 27/01/2016 12:54

Where?? Where??

Oh dear me! Wear!Blush

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 27/01/2016 13:09

i think skinnies are here to stay! only difference i have noticed in the last year is higher waistbands (which i prefer as very flattering to hide the flabby bits!)

However i am not into following fashion - i tend to wear what i like and find comfortable. At the moment its skinnies, qwertee tshirts and converse.

SlightlyTired · 27/01/2016 13:18

I have to say I am really confused by jeans at the moment. I don't feel like I want to wear skinnies any more. I love the boyfriend cut for summer - rolled up with heels or trainers - but what on earth do you wear on your feet with them during winter? Mine are ever so slightly cropped. I bought some that are somewhere between skinnies and boyfriends - I suppose they are girlfriends - but they feel like neither fish nor fowl to me. Actually I feel a bit of a frump in them. This is why I wear skirts and dresses in winter...

I think boyfriend jeans can be just as hideously unflattering as skinnies. All that baggy material around bum and thighs is hard look for a lot of people to pull off. And they manage to make lots of people's legs look stumpy.

mummyagainin2016 · 27/01/2016 14:07

I'm sticking with skinnies and straight cut! Can't stand the way that all other jeans get soaked around the bottom from puddles in wet weather, and wet is how the weather generally is where I am at the moment. Yes, boyfriend or straight cut are great in sumemr too, with the right footwear, but boyfriend jeans and winter footwear confuses me.

EmGee · 27/01/2016 14:21

Me too mummy. It took me ages to get into skinnies and it was only because saw a personal stylist at JL who said 'Try these'. I loved them instantly so no idea why it took me so long to get a pair.

Years ago I wore bootcut which suited my footwear at the time (flat ankle boots). Now in winter I have various styles of boots (riding, biker etc) and skinnies suit them. I also like them in summer with flat shoes/sandals.

I have no idea what kind of jean I'd choose now. When skinnies are on the wane, it will no doubt take me years to get into whatever new style comes in.

I don't suit boyfriend style at all (look shapeless on me), too short for flares but I like straight leg in the warmer weather as they go with lots of my shoes.

Juaneeze · 27/01/2016 14:21

I think skinnies are around to stay for a while yet too as that is all I can ever seem to find in the shop. That being said I'm blessed cursed with shapely calves so a normal straight leg ends up being skinny on me with the added bonus of baggy knees.

I've become a bit of a Bershka jean fan over the last few months, their ripped ones have well placed rips (more like grazes). No gaping holes with thigh flesh oozing out Grin
In fact I'm sat in waiting for a Bershka delivery now of black skinnies! Wish Hermes would hurry the hell up.

paxillin · 27/01/2016 14:23

Skinny jeans can be terribly unflattering on the not-so-skinny. Look great on the washing line, they easily look 2 sizes smaller than boyfriend cut. Maybe I'll keep a pair for pretence.

FairyDustDreamer · 27/01/2016 14:58

I'm slim but on the short side. My legs are slim but with muscle/ shape er whatever! I think I look shit in skinny jeans. Whenever I have tried them on feel uncomfortable and shriek at the mirror. Yet, in the early 90s I was a fan of leggings- mmm....
So shall be a frump in my short legged straight or bootcut jeans....

tellmelies · 27/01/2016 15:34

I think boyfriend jeans can be just as hideously unflattering as skinnies. All that baggy material around bum and thighs is hard look for a lot of people to pull off. And they manage to make lots of people's legs look stumpy.

If you're even slightly overweight, boyfriend jeans can look hideous on.
If you are a bit overweight it's best to go for relaxed skinnies, that way you avoid the tight sausage leg look.
