Do I need to move on from skinny jeans??

There have probably been threads like this already but....

I am hitting the shops tomorrow(ie. Zara) for my annual wardrobe top up. I NEVER shop. I am a country bumpkin and I work from home, I live in 3 pairs of different coloured skinny jeans from Zara, have one "going out" pair of Maison Scotch skinny jeans, with a few tops and jumpers, one pair of heeled ankle boots and one pair of knee high boots + trainers.

I am getting the feeling that I should not be buying more skinnies tomorrow. That the world has moved on. But I don't know if I can bring myself to buy bootcut or wide leg or mid calf trousers. I've only just packed away the bootlegs from the early 00s a few years ago!

What style do I buy that I can wear day in day out that doesn't look about 5 years behind everything? Or do I stick to skinnies cos I like them?

OP posts:

I don't think bootcut are more flattering - trousers that only coming in at the knees is just a bit weird looking...and the bigger you are the worse it looks.

SnozzberryMincePie · 28/01/2016 09:12

When I used to wear bootcut or flared jeans back in the day I usually wore them slightly long with chunky trainers peeping out of the front. Hideously impractical in the rain.

Larastheme · 28/01/2016 09:18

Skinnies are not going anywhere, its just that we have more options, where at one point it was just skinnies and nothing else, different cuts serve different looks/seasons etc, although I see loads of people wearing relaxed or straight legs with loafers trainers even slip on trainers ATM, have worn my straight leg jeans with pointy ankle boots and they looked really good

Harverina · 28/01/2016 09:28

I don't think that skinnies will go.

They are too versatile.

I bought straight leg/slim leg this winter and they suit my shape better without me having to go for a boot cut. My issue has been boots! No boots look nice with them. Skinnies can be worn with knee highs or ankle boots.

I also wouldn't wear my slim cut with heels. Would always choose skinny.

So although I love the look of slim/straight on me, they really only look decent with pumps (I don't wear trainers). Which hasn't been ideal on rainy days!

Foxedme · 28/01/2016 09:39

Desperate for them to be on their way out....

prayingforsnow I just saw the same pictures (DM? Blush ) and came on here to say the same thing Grin I love her look, as well as the navy and white colour. I can't wait for Spring/Summer Grin

I think skinnies are here to stay though, they're extremely flattering.

HPsauciness · 28/01/2016 09:57

Almost every single girl aged 18-22 on the campus I work on is wearing skinnies, indeed they seem to be getting even tighter. The memo hasn't gone out about skinnies being over.

niminypiminy · 28/01/2016 10:27

But I'm in my mid-fifties, I don't want to look like an 18-22 year old!

IME young women are quite conformist in what they wear - how many very young women are there at the moment with short hair, for example? - it is the oldsters among us, who are less worried about sticking out from the crowd, who are more experimental and prepared to try new things.

Fashion may be modelled by the young, but it's bought by the middle-aged.

Vazder · 28/01/2016 10:33

straight cut are fabby but only really look nice with trainers which suits me as I live in them.

StayWithMe · 28/01/2016 10:48

Reads OP.
Looks down at bootcuts.
Reads posts.
Feels old.
Looks at size of arse.
Strokes bootcuts fondly.

Vazder · 28/01/2016 10:50

bootcut are unflattering IMO unless you have tiny thighs

JonSnowKnowsNowt · 28/01/2016 10:54

I've just started wearing them so yes they are probably over smile

yes, me too!

seafoodeatit · 28/01/2016 11:19

You don't need to move on from anything! wear what you whatever you like, life is too short to follow rules of so called fashion.

I have the opposite problem as I don't wear skinny jeans and have found that 90% of maternity jeans are skinny style and have bought a pair out of necessity.

StayWithMe · 28/01/2016 11:25

Like others have said, wear what you want. I have never understood women worrying over fashion. Don't get me wrong, I occasionally wear makeup, nice clothes, but I never worry weather other people approve of it. I'm maybe a but weird but I dress in what me me happy/comfortable. though I draw the line at pyjamas as outside clothes

I hate all kinds of trousers. Jeans, leggings, wide leg, palazzo (or however you spell it) the lot. Wish I was born in the 30's.

MamaAwayOnBusiness · 28/01/2016 11:34

Has everyone seen this article www.theguardian.com/fashion/2016/jan/28/waisted-again-will-the-wedgie-kill-off-the-skinny-jean in The Guardian today? Apparently wedgies are the way to go...

Ginkypig · 28/01/2016 11:45

I must be the only wo who loves flares/kick flares (properly cut though)

I'm quite long legged and relatively wide hipped though so it may be that, they balance me out where as skinnys make me feel like an upside down triangle.

I have a pair at size 12 dp skinnys which I used to like and a maternity primary black pair but neither fit just now (middle of weight watchers at mo) plus the other thing is I have quite big feet so flats/trainers make me look massive footed but with flares or decent fitting boot cut I can wear any shoe as my feet look smaller due to denim coverings:-)

Ginkypig · 28/01/2016 11:47

Oh and i love the fact no one else seems to like them apart from me due to the fact that in the sales this year I got a brand new pair of flares from gap for £7.99 down from £45.00. Must be because I'm the only person in the world who was even looking Grin

Lweji · 28/01/2016 11:49

I like them all. But then I have skinny legs.

UhtredRagnorsson · 28/01/2016 12:00

Vazder bootcut are extremely unflattering if you have tiny thighs! I used to get lost in them when they were the only thing you could get in the shops. I basically gave up wearing jeans in those years and lived in either sports wear or combats.

Oooh I quite like the look of those wedgie jeans you linked to Mama.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 28/01/2016 12:51

I hate the wedgie jeans and who thought of the name? It suggest that anyone wearing them will have their knickers wedged where they don't want them and some sort of denim camel toe going onConfused

CrystalMcPistol · 28/01/2016 12:51

The name is very, very bad indeed. But I do love a high waist.
