New thread...

Giddy - DD had linen provided by her college but took her own as "it was nicer" so in fact we bought her a bedding set, duvet etc at IKEA. Gowns are required for formals but I think it's just the bog standard black one for undergrads. At least that's what DD has. They cost about £38 newShock - DD got a second hand one from the college for half this price and in perfect condition. DD is up there for the next week working and then will be there again from about 16 September. She will be happy to friend your DS on FB and dish the dirt if he wants.

hattymattie · 22/08/2015 19:27

CV - I had a friend who systematically split up with her boyfriends after holidaysConfused

herbaceous · 22/08/2015 19:38

We eyes up that golf today, month, and put it on The List. Along with aquarium, dinosaur museum, cinema, and the indoor bit of Pecorama. Any break in the rain and we'll attempt some Jolly Rockpooling. Or crabbing.

Have introduced DS to the delights of scrabble, that classic rainy holiday activity. He is a total natural.

motherinferior · 22/08/2015 19:51

'All the young people were wild to see Lyme'. I always remember that, from Jane Austen's Persuasion. Be careful jumping down from any low walls too, that's how Louisa Musgrave becomes mysteriously injured.

Helpful, aren't I....

BeachysFlipFlops · 22/08/2015 20:25

The texts are coming through thick and fast from Wales! 10 miles yesterday, swimming and 5 miles today, Snowdon tomorrow (in all the shitty weather forecast for Wales). Quite a lot for a just 10 year old to cope with Hmm feeling a bit concerned here.....

Blackduck · 22/08/2015 21:10

Beachy I am sure she will be fine - If very knackered on her return....

MI :) I loves Persuasion.....

Here Olympic park where Ds managed to hook up with a girl (clearly going to have to watch him in years to come) and then fab curry with the bot. But serious convos with family to resolve tensions re dad and mum....

Stropperella · 22/08/2015 21:30

Yo Crepsters! Popping up again to wave feebly and one and all. It's been a helluva week. There were blue flashing lights at the beginning of it and it's all been a bit ... tricky I was also on The Dreaded List and despite having changed my password umpty-two times, I am still having isshoos when accessing MN via my phone. If I ask it to show me threads I'm on, it does, but then wants me to log in. I find this somewhat suspish, as generally if you're not logged in, it won't show you "threads I'm on" as it doesn't know who you are. Confused So I'm only posting from the PC at the moment, as that is behind a big fat firewall and doesn't seem to be suffering from any funny business.

I haven't managed to read all the rest of the last thread, but am here to say Big Congratulations to all the GCSE-doers. I'm sorry to hear that your dd had a difficult time on results day, Rudy. I hope she is managing to see her way forward.

Crem, hugs to you. I'm very sorry to hear the news about your workplace.

Herbs, I'm sorry the Dorset weather is not being very friendly this week. Am also sorry that ds is doing his thespy stuff with the Youth Theatre's Combined Arts Week, as he isn't free during the day, so I can't offer him up as a distraction for your ds. (and he is currently off all w/e with the cubs and scouts doing daring activities at PGL) However, he finishes at 5pm on Mon and Tues, so we could do an early evening mini-MU if you fancied it. Things I recommend which are not too far from Lyme = The Electric Palace at Bridport for a real olde time cinema experience. Also crabbing at West Bay. And there is a Boden-tastic cafe on the beach there, the Watch House Cafe, owned by the same people that run the Hive Cafe at Burton Bradstock. There is the SeaLife Centre at Weymouth (don't know how it compares to the aquarium in Lyme, but might be worth a go anyway as there is quite a lot to see and some sort of Lego-related event going on there at the moment) and Sandworld is next to it. And then there is ye olde tramway at Seaton/Colyton. And the spooky caves at Beer (lovely little fishing village, nice even in the rain and has a sweet little visitor centre by the beach which we enjoyed a couple of weeks ago). If it is not tipping down, there is the Swannery at Abbotsbury and a Children's Farm park and Sub-Tropical Gardens there also (think you can get into all of them with one ticket). Abbotsbury is a very picturesque village and worth a look. Slightly further up the coast road (going east) there is a village called Portesham and I have heard that the pub there (the Kings Arms) is currently v good for food. This may be a bit far east for you, but still... That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but do PM me if you think I can be of any help.

Stropperella · 22/08/2015 21:31

Gah, I'm obviously waving feebly at one and all. Not 'and'. But you knew that...

BeachysFlipFlops · 22/08/2015 21:32

Actually panic over.... Just received a text saying 'can't wait for Snowdon' so much happier....

Very sad about local Shoreham disaster. A road I use a lot Hmm

Blackduck · 22/08/2015 21:36

Stropps welcome back :).

Blackduck · 22/08/2015 21:55

Beachy I think dd is going to come back 10 feet tall... :)

GiddyGiddyGoat · 22/08/2015 21:57

Yo Stropps!

magimedi · 22/08/2015 22:09

Just marking my place in the new thread.

Don't 'know' you well, Stropps, but am very pleased to se you back.

Shoreham has made me very sad , been to that airshow for the last xxx years, but had stuff on this w/e so could not go.

A27 round there going to be shut for the next 2+ days - suspect it's going to back up even as far as us.

Stropperella · 22/08/2015 22:41

Thanks for the welcome back! BD and GGG, hope you got my emails. Just catching up with my correspondence today. Grin

I grew up with an aversion to air shows, that was passed on to me by my dm, who was at the Farnborough air show in 1952 and witnessed the crash that killed 31 people. So I've never been to one and always get a bit sweaty watching any kind of displays where people may come to serious harm if they make a mistake/ the equipment fails. So sad to hear about today's events :(

Slowly catching up with life in Crepeyville. Sorry to hear about developments with your ddad, Rose.

And I'm glad the writing holiday is going well, MI!

I'm still feeling very odd and shell-shocked after events here this week, but I hope we're moving on. However, it's not all down to me and I don't know that others here are ready to move on yet. (Meh, I hate being cryptic but I can't really let it all hang out this time.) Will see if I can come on the 26th, but not currently in a position to commit.

Aww, CV, I feel sorry for your ds. He sounds a bit hemmed-in.

Lalsy · 22/08/2015 22:51

Wotcha Stropps! Sorry about tricky week. And waves at WAF and anyone else outside with the face pressed against the glass. I hope we can all keep making as much noise as possible - they shall not win!

MI, so impressed about your writing-on-holiday. And I love Persuasion too, my favourite Austen.

Herbs and Monty, we did more trudging round the wet western fringes than I care to remember when dc were little.

Beachy that is fab about dd, good for her.

Shock about train and Shoreham.

CointreauVersial · 22/08/2015 23:18

I'm seriously impressed by your DD, Beachy. None of mine would have even counternanced such a trip without having a close friend to accompany them, and they certainly wouldn't have got on that coach.

motherinferior · 23/08/2015 07:13

Stropps, even reading between the lines that sounds Very Hard.

DP's brother was at the air show but is unharmed.

I fear I have misrepresented my hard work this holiday - I've done a lot of Absolutely Nothing as well Grin.

hattymattie · 23/08/2015 08:18

Stropps - so pleased you came back. I wish you and your family well and am glad you made it though the week. Do stayThanks ThanksSmile .

Crem - hope they can pull something out of the bag at work.

Here - PS hammered together again, although I added what I considered a rather brilliant sentence which DD2 struck out - grr. She will never listen and things got a bit terse - especially as she was at a friend's whilst I retyped!

As it was also very hot we ended reconciled over a family bonding session watching The Walking Dead which scared me half to death so I was unable to sleep the rest of the night. DD2 and DH being made of sterner stuff fell asleep straight away.

Rosebag · 23/08/2015 09:03

"Absolutely nothing" is good MI. My sort of holiday.

stropps I am relieved that you are back. We were poorer for your absence. Sorry things have been so very tough and stressful. I guess one just plods on. Flowers

Airshow tragedy still playing on my mind. Just a few miles from here and like beachy, on a much frequented route. Sad

However it's great about DD, beachy Smile

Last day here today. By DMs reports DDad is in reasonable spirits but despite the physio's best efforts they can't improve his mobility. I have been researching care homes and how people fund places in them. I've had happier reading I must say.

Ah well, better get up and face the world. Weather has been devine the last two days but due to break today. Sorry for all of you holidaying in the South West with all that wretched rain. I think it's bound for us today....

bigTillyMint · 23/08/2015 09:37

Stropps, great to see ya!

Had a nice catch-up with friends last night, though the gas BBQ looks like it's on the way out (hooray - its ancient and I would rather have a real one!) and the neighbours shut their window firmly at one pointGrin

Rose, I hope you have absorbed all the Care Home stuff - I will be coming to you in due course, no doubtWink

MI, a lot of Absolutely Nothing sounds perfect!

BeachysFlipFlops · 23/08/2015 09:49

Welcome back Stropps Smile and strength for the coming weeks.

Magi, I hadn't realised you were so close. Are you east or west of the air show?

bigTillyMint · 23/08/2015 09:53

for all those with difficult teens!

magimedi · 23/08/2015 09:56

Beachy, I am East of the airshow & east (just) of your (old) name!

Sorry for all the teen trouble - they do leave it behind, even though it sometimes seems they never will.

hattymattie · 23/08/2015 10:23

Thanks for article BTMSmile - makes me feel relatively lucky - I think I'm going to have a long wait for the period of closeness with DD2 although DD1 is a delight (most of the time).

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/08/2015 10:56

Welcome back Stropps! Yay!
