New thread...

Rose, so glad you have found somewhere good that is close. It is hard but you are quite right, so important to get away from the whole thing sometimes, otherwise it is impossible to see clearly.

I am finding this weather immensely frustrating - our internet only works intermittently in rain, and I have a house full of wet washing and a car full of rubbish. I can't sort anything out and we go away tomorrow. And have had to crank ds up to the realisation that he is about to start sixth form.

I really, really want to come on the 26th but have theatre tickets booked from ages ago. Will see what I can do.

wilbur · 26/08/2015 13:22

Beachy - are you really doing the O2 climb? I did it early in the summer (I have no issue with heights so that was not a problem), but I have to say I was somewhat underwhelmed by the experience for the price. Wish I'd saved the cash and gone up the Shard instead as the view from the O2 is not up to much - you can't see the city or really even Canary Wharf as there are new buildings on the riverside that obscure it. You can see a bit more, between buildings, on the way down and obvs you can see plenty of Greenwich and east river, but it's not the prettiest. Climb is fun though, if you like that sort of thing, which I do, and dd and ds2 enjoyed it a lot.

Rose - I hope the decisions and moving process for your ddad go smoothly. It does sound like you've made the right decision and found the right place, but I can only imagine how hard it is.

Very frustrating life here at the moment - a large number of things not going my way or as planned, but since some of them are the firstest of First World problems, I feel it would be feeble to share. I'm hoping this is a darkness just before the dawn scenario...

MrsSchadenfreude · 26/08/2015 18:17

Rose, Hatty, BTM, according to the carer, his relatives are only interested in the money when the flat is sold, and she overheard the eldest DD telling him that she wanted petrol money for coming up to see him (she drives a VERY flash car Hmm). There are very good reasons for the children of one of the wives not being in touch with him (and this is apparently also the reason his last wife divorced him) but I am not going to put them on here.

Rose, a couple of my elderly relatives ended up in homes, and they were lovely, like a hotel, with fresh flowers everywhere, nice lounges, and no smell of boiled cabbage or wee. One of my aunts said she wished they had moved there sooner (they were in their 90s when they went). The food was excellent (we went for lunch once), they had a bar, could go into the nearest town easily and the home arranged trips into London to the theatre. They saw a few, and said that this one just felt right to them.

Just a random gate crash comment - I'm in Lyme Regis too Herb! Hi ya!

CointreauVersial · 26/08/2015 19:54

Oi Rudy and BTM, are you dissing my Sketchers on the comfy footwear thread? Angry Wink

Trust me, they are very plain black, trainer stylee, with white laces and soles, no multicoloured trim or jazzy straps. DD1 and GF gave them the thumbs up, but tbh I was so footsore yesterday I probably wouldn't have cared what they looked like. Remember, I do have terrible feet. But today I walked on memory foam. Grin I skipped around the Van Gogh museum!

bigTillyMint · 26/08/2015 20:02

CV Grin Actually, they sound comfy!

GBBO!

hattymattie · 26/08/2015 20:35

Well I never knew there was French and Swiss meringueConfused. I think they're much meaner on GBBO than Masterchef.

CointreauVersial · 26/08/2015 21:01

There was Italian meringue as well, Hatty.

A Meringue, or Am I Right? (geddit?)

hattymattie · 26/08/2015 21:08

GrinCV.

magimedi · 26/08/2015 22:24

Sketchers are B L I S S! No one gives 'em diss.

What's white & fluffy & swings throughthe jungle?

A meringue outang!

Had to go & eat a piece of choc while watching Fake Off ( a rare thing for me) as it made me ache for sugar.

had a fab chinese takeaway and a bottle of champange 'because it needed using' (my BF has a top shelf full of champange) - we discussed kitchens (he's painted his a rather nice shade of yellow) and work (pants for both of us) and people and chiroprators (witchcraft - see a good osteopath instead) and the world and everything.......

I am now at my desk wondering what the hell I am doing here and knowing that I really really must work on my exit strategy. (MrsS if what I feel is even a 10th of how you have felt in the last year I have muncho sympathy)

bigTillyMint · 27/08/2015 08:29

That's the right kind of friend, BD! And yes, get on with your exit strategy Wink

DH dropped DD off before 6 at her friends and they have now arrived at Reading. With their wellies and raincoats! DS and I are dropping DGodD back to Euston later and then going shopping to see if we can find him any skinny/slim-fit school trousers to go with pointy shoes for his new school look. Problem is his massive thighs and calves - could be a hard trawl!

Blackduck · 27/08/2015 08:43

crepeys with teen sons - where on earth do you shop? Fatface (ds's fav) seems to stop at 12 and start again when they are men.... M&S he frankly hates..... Do teen boys go around nakked?

Rosebag · 27/08/2015 08:54

Thanks MrsS. You're right, not all homes are the same. The care manager from this nice one has responded very quickly and visited DDad in the hospital yesterday afternoon. They have accepted him as soon as a place becomes available and he is ready to be discharged from hospital. I think DM has confidence in them but won't use the word 'care home.' She prefers to say ' convalescence and rehab' but that's fine, if it helps her cope. I do think over all DDad is fading. He spends a lot of time asleep and his confusion is increasing. Sad
I'm so sorry about the ongoing situation with your neighbour MrsS. Stupid question I know, but can you move?

tilly not sure but I thought M&S did different fit school trousers although it's been a while since I had to buy any. dS1 always liked very skinny fit, and DS2 was much stockier and needed wider fit!

Good luck with your exit strategy BD carpe diem Smile

We had a leak yesterday after the monsoon, which was the joyless situation I got back to after hospital visiting yesterday. Between the kitchen and the sunlounge. Lovely spreading brown stain on the ceiling, and it's still bloody raining. Angry

Rosebag · 27/08/2015 08:58

BD next directory goes up 16. Also the Jonny B range in Boden but that's not everyone's cup of tea. I think H&M kids/teens go up to age 15. Men's size small in Top Man and also men's small in Zara is what we have used and in the past if it fitted elsewhere, but was too long I had the dry cleaner do an alteration.

bigTillyMint · 27/08/2015 09:10

BD, DS wears sports fashion mostly (and has done all his life!) - Adidas and Nike are favourites. He tends to wear Adidas tracky bottoms (got to be a certain slim-leg styleWink) and a white or black Tshirt. Topman for jeans and other smarter stuff, Zara, etc, and he does have some Primarni shorts/chinos/Tshirts still. Sadly, he has been in men's clothing for a year so it's not cheap!

And FWIW, he would NOT go around naked, though he spends a lot of time lounging in his boxers!

Rose, DS is too tall for the M&S uniform trousers now 0 he has some men's ones from last year, but they are only straight leg and he says unsuitable to wear with the pointy shoes he fancies (he is right!) DH is VERY keen to get him into polishable shoes (and not the non-uniform trainers, though he has got Kickers) so we are going to look in Burton, BHS and maybe M&S mens!

Sorry to hear about the leak - what a pain.

hattymattie · 27/08/2015 09:12

RoseAngry for you with leak - they are horrible things, not to mention expensive. We still have a brown mark on the living room roof from the shower which we still haven't rectified as we are still not convinced the shower doesn't leak!

hattymattie · 27/08/2015 09:14

Oh yes - thanks for the tip on Zara small men - I have squeezed DS into age 14 trousers but he's at that awkward age where kids clothes are too small and adult too big. I never had to do teenage boys beforeConfused

BeachysFlipFlops · 27/08/2015 09:15

I would second Next and H&M for those difficult years, BD. We did do some Johnnie B, but only in the sale. We also did a lot of trading - the boys were all growing so fast but at different speeds, so trousers would literally be passed from A to DS to B all within one season.....

hattymattie · 27/08/2015 09:18

X post BTM and BD - I don't want to invest too much in clothes for DS as he's 13 and going to shoot up any minute now - although at the moment he's still a little boy - voice unbrokenSmile

Lalsy · 27/08/2015 09:21

BD, it is tricky. US/Scandi makes (H and M, the Gap) come up big so they can stay in children's clothes longer. TopMan comes up quite small (but £££ when they are growing like weeds). Like BTM's ds, ds wore sports stuff pretty well all the time (quite often school PE kit!) until year 11 when he started "showering" and "getting ready" to go out Grin.

Rose Flowers for your and your family - it is sad, however great the home. I hope it goes smoothly.

Good luck with job apps, MrsS, BD and...Herbs?

dd finishes her job today, then we are away for the weekend, then she goes away with friends, then back to uni. I don't feel like I have seen much of her - she has done a lot of paid work, which was the right thing for her, but we haven't had our normal outings.

MontserratCaballe · 27/08/2015 09:32

Morning! So sorry to hear about the leak. Rose, my dad has been in a home for nearly 4 years now so I know the system well. I am back on Sunday and the kids go back on Thursday. Perhaps we could meet for coffee/ lunch to chat about it. Sorry your dad isn't doing so well. Hope a room comes free soon. Flowers

Can't help with the teenage boy clothing I am afraid but there are some good suggestions here. Does H and M do teenage boys' clothes? They do them for girls which are ok.

Am a bit concerned about DD1 who is getting a bit plump. She has a huge appetite and is clearly starting to develop but I think is getting a bit out of hand. This morning she ate some of the chocolate which DS made at a chocolate workshop earlier in the week. I don't mind treats on holiday but she doesn't seem to have a stop mechanism at home or away. Anyone got any suggestions? I will revert to not buying too many biscuits etc once we are home but ice cream etc is de rigueur here, especially when it's raining.

motherinferior · 27/08/2015 09:39

How old is she, Monty?

I am sure you won't do this but please don't turn it into an issue. But I do realise I am irrational about this. When we came back to England when I was eight (after two years in Asia) I started filling out from being v skinny - I was also developing - and needless to say my parents inculcated me with lifelong guilt and shame about my fat body.

MontserratCaballe · 27/08/2015 09:50

MI, she was ten in April. She is naturally large framed and is already 5 ft tall with size 5 feet. I am hugely conscious of not making an issue of it. I was told I was fat when I was about 11 (which I was, but didnt need to hear it) and my relationship with my body has been weird ever since. I am just very aware that she is a bit too big round the tummy and I wonder how I can nip it in the bud before it becomes a real problem.
