Sorry, I meant blatant not blantant Confused

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/06/2015 23:13

Ruth just had a baby, lovely picture on Instagram. A whopper of a baby actually, little Sumo thing.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/06/2015 23:15

I saw. Almost 10lb! Sweet photo though.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 21/06/2015 23:20

I was always a devotee of aroline hirons but have unsubscribed from her blog etc as i can't stand the you tubing. There was something refreshing in a wan who wasnhustblike you saying look, you have to wash your face, here is how to moisturise, stay away from x etc but now it is sycophantic you tube videos and it's out of hand. I'm not a 12 year old fab girl hoping the likes of zoella follows me on Instagram. I just want an honest fucking review of product!

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/06/2015 23:27

I didn't know they have the same managing company, or even that they have one.
That explains all the chummy goings on.
Blimey I'm naive.

Cloggal · 22/06/2015 01:14

I didn't know that either - count me in the naive camp. Disappointing.

My shoe comment was more about well, if you're into seeing 1,000 pairs of shoes, that's fine, I'm not - but 1,000 skincare products I'm there, yes please! To me, more interesting. Even in a cursory way.

Bloggers/MUAs/stylists/slebs will always be sent freebies whether it's fashion, make up, skincare, regardless of shelf life/season. Wasn't too fussed on the video itself tbh, but that's because it was just 'what have you got in your stash' rather than recommendations, thanks ottilia for a pharmacie fix...

jasmine1979 · 22/06/2015 01:23

Here is the management company.
www.gleamfutures.com/
Trust me. If you read any of their blogs or watch their videos, you are being sold to. Pretty much every product they talk about is sponsored in some way. That's totally fine, but it's just something to be aware of before you part with your hard earned money. Smile
Also be aware that if products are linked beneath a video they are nearly always affiliate links so that the youtuber/blogger receives a percentage of the sale if you click and then buy anything from that site within a month.

I had a "following CH too long" moment this week
Fell asleep, couldn't be bothered getting out of bed to remove makeup Blush new (ish) boyf "want me to get you your flannel and hot water?" GrinGrin

Kundry · 22/06/2015 06:54

OMG about the management company. Have looked at your link SadAngry

findingmyfeet12 · 22/06/2015 07:06

When she raved about the young bloggers I thought Sali's attitude was quite lukewarm. She only murmured approval when it was unavoidable.

Caroline lost credibility for me at that point. Some of those bloggers are just celebrities for teens to admire and for someone like her to mention them in the context of her career in skincare is embarrassing.

JessieMcJessie · 22/06/2015 07:09

I really like Sali Hghes' writing and I had just discovered Caroline Hirons so I really wanted to love this but dear God it was tedious. After the 25th cleanser "yeah that's really lovely, mm such a great smell, I'm SO into Tata Harper right now" I clicked to see how long was left and nearly fell off my chair when I saw that there were 40 minutes to go! I bowed out at that point. It was in theory a good idea but could have done with some serious editing. Half the time I couldn't read the bottles and they weren't enunciating the names clearly enough so I was none the wiser. The interesting thing is that when you strip away the packaging and shove all the bottles in a plastic ikea box it all starts to look like crap.

Also (and I know that this may be a nasty thing to say) but I had been readling Caroline's writing and she was very vocal on healthy eating and, in particular, giving up sugar completely. She doesn't really look like she follows her own guidance.

Floisme · 22/06/2015 07:16

Trust me. If you read any of their blogs or watch their videos, you are being sold to.
Exactly. Thank you for the link, Jasmine

Kundry · 22/06/2015 07:26

Interestingly most of the bloggers I've followed and given up on are with that management company - all became v samey, listing endless products, owning 65 foundations despite being in their early 20s and having perfect skin...

Only stick with Ruth Crilly because I like her writing and CH as she is more skincare than beauty.

Seeing the whole page of who they manage, plus how many jobs they are advertising in their company, it all feels a bit vacuous and you realise just how much money is floating on the back of this.

Have recently drifted towards British Beauty Blogger more, despite not really being into the beauty side of things, partly as she is older and partly due to honest postings about what it's like. Seeing the management company explains a lot of this:

Bakeoffcake · 22/06/2015 07:52

I just can't take someone seriously who recommends different products so frequently- she cannot be testing them properly on her skin, it's obviously just all about advertising.

I also think her website is shocking.

FrugalFashionista · 22/06/2015 08:02

I don't know whether it is the management company or the paid endorsements or the youtubing, but I think CH's blog has become just another mouthpiece for promoting stuff.

I think evidence has never been CH's strong point. I think she is genuinely funny and has a warm and humorous style, but I am not super convinced by her advice. She often tells people to do certain things 'because I told you so'. I am not sure she always understands why or how stuff works. Other skincare bloggers do their homework better, I personally prefer bloggers who back up their claims up with evidence. Beauty Brains, Pocket Derm, Skin & Tonics, Fifty Shades of Snail, even Paula... They all have helped me to understand skincare and its active ingredients. And many test a product for much longer before reviewing it - when I buy a jar of something, I use it for months so I am really interested in the long term view... Kundry here on S&B does a far superior job describing what works and how and how to make the most of your budget!

Personally, I think the brand endorsements are undermining CH's credibility a bit. She has this fundamental mismatch that many of her followers are into budget stuff and would be happy to shop at supermarkets and Boots, but the higher end products have bigger PR budgets so she has to be their spokesperson. All that Zelens stuff just bores me to death, sorry, and the Cult Beauty box was also priced totally beyond what most of people here would be ready to pay.

Marylou2 · 22/06/2015 08:03

I've found this thread absolutely fascinating. I can't believe i've been so naive about the whole blogging industry.I think Caroline Hirons has blown the veneer of credibility she had with revealing herself to be merely a brand consultant for hire. Not that there's anything wrong with this but cloaking it in the persona of being a dermatalogical expert is disingenuous. The whole hour was increasingly tedious, although like many others I loved the Brix Smith Start and Caitlin Moran vlogs. Still like Ruth from AMR though she seems very lovely and conscientious.

findingmyfeet12 · 22/06/2015 08:24

I thought the Marian Keyes videos were entertaining too.

Kundry · 22/06/2015 08:27

Ruth has been in trouble for doing sponsored work without declaring it was sponsored. It's v obvious that she's paid by Burberry for example as she uses a lot of their stuff. However I tend to forgive her as she's so likeable - plus I never buy anything in that price bracket anyway!

It is obvious that many of them have little to no science knowledge which is why 'qualified' CH gets so far - sorry but being qualified as a facialist isn't cutting it with me, you are still mainly qualified to flog products. And sometimes in her Dr Sam Bunting videos her lack of knowledge really shows.

Thank-you frugal - everything I know is taken straight from Paula, Dr Sam Bunting and Hot & Flashy! I'll check out your suggestions as I've just done a cull of the blogs I follow Cake

CarolBornAMan · 22/06/2015 09:44

Agree with all said here - feel like just lost a mate - the video was just excruciating to watch and made me realise CH does not test stuff - she uses it once and then moves on .. how can she give any advice on anything.. I hated the clique-y nature of it -how they fawn over Charlotte T and her overpriced range of bog standard make up .. both raving about Zelens (hello paid to do so!) and no advice or anything useful. Have just unsubscribed from CH blog now and twitter as don't think she has any credibility anymore.. time to stick with doctors who know what they are talking about and use tested products, not freebies they used once years ago and are paid to push ..

OttiliaVonBCup · 22/06/2015 09:54

One thing they mentioned that's really good is the Clarins SOS Serum.
I always have a bottle of it and it great at taking redness out and calming the skin and it smells lovely.

That's been around forever though.

lurkingaround · 22/06/2015 10:09

Bloggers have management companies!!! Feck off. Jeez. How innocent am I. Wow. Who knew. Sheesh.

Didn't watch much all of the video but what's with all the 'smell this...it's divine' crap. Fragrance is probably one of the most obvious irritants in skincare. Expert?? Me thinks not.

Annarose2014 · 22/06/2015 10:14

Yeah the Marian Keyes one is good. She's a "civilian" who is obsessed with beauty products so she gets really into her makeup.

Must watch the other two ladies. Definately not watching this one based on the comments!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 22/06/2015 10:19

I would just like to say something on the 'Dr' front. Skincare lines with a Doctor as a figurehead aren't necessarily any better or any more scientific/clinical than what you can buy from Boots. There are plenty of doctors out there who are prepared to shill and make outrageous claims for a few quid, having a medical degree does not make them immune to it (despite all the lectures in ethics).

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 10:21

Aren't dermatologists like Sam Bunting paid by companies to promote certain products too? I'm at a loss otherwise to see why they rave about a rubbish product like Cetaphil so much.
