Just spent an enjoyable hour watching sali's in the bathroom with Caroline hirons any wondered if anyone knows where sali's dress in from? Really like the colourful buttons: m.youtube.com/watch?v=YucPnS4j4kQ

I think she has shot herself in the foot, and totally destroyed the credibility I understand she had. Showing pot after pot of product, and describing new ones arriving daily, just makes you realise she cannot possibly give any of them a real trial (as other people have pointed out). Then, once you factor in all the other, ever changing products on her routine, I cannot see how she can ever attribute a change in her skin to any one product. It's a mind-boggling number of variables!

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 10:24

Agree dranksangria (great name!)

I admit to being a bit of a CH devotee, but only because of the results. I have seriously bad skin, have tried everything (including medication and dermatologists) and nothing worked for long. My skin isn't perfect now but I can leave the house without make up thanks to the advice and product recommendations - which probably aren't rocket science to those in the know, but hey - they work for me. I buy carefully according to what I can afford at the time (sometimes v expensive, sometimes bargain bucket) and I pass on anything that disagrees with me.

I don't agree with all the products CH likes but the majority, and with my skin I wouldn't have gone near the oils and balms I use now.

MadAngryGnome · 21/06/2015 10:25

I thought we were going to get to see what she actually uses on her face, day to day like Caitlin Moran's video not just drawers of products being waved about and lots of 'yes, yes, good' from Sali. I mean, surely she has favourites out of those mountains of cleansers, serums, mascaras etc??

bettybigballs · 21/06/2015 10:27

So sorry I didn't come back to this yesterday, thanks for finding the dress. Loved the video too, skincare porn!

I read more of her blog and she does tell you a lot about the products mentioned there, I was wrong about that.
She does advocate piling up of what seems like millions of products.

The video though was in poor taste.

lurkingaround · 21/06/2015 10:37

Spent far too much time looking at this last night darn glance at S&B and this happens Tedious enough stuff. God it would drive me crazy living with all those sleeves of products spilling off shelves. Suppose it's her job. Couldn't sleep in that.

And what about expiry dates? I'm not a stickler, but say a cleanser lasts what, 3 months? She must have 40 cleansers? 40x3=120 months??? 10 years of stuff. UGH!! 10 yr old cleanser. Seriously. She can't test them all.

Annarose2014 · 21/06/2015 10:53

She rarely uses the same product two days in a row. And lest we forget her routine has about 6 steps (i.e. Products) a day. So theoretically she could use 42 different products a week.

We know this cos she instagrammes her products of the day. And she wrote a blog post showing what she packed for a 2 week trip to LA. Madness! It must've taken up a whole suitcase!

So she probably has all of those in rotation once a week or so. I'm not watching the video though as I am deeply sick of her hard-on for Tata Harper and Sunday Riley and don't need to hear more of it, thank you Caroline.

But I can't deny that the addition of acid toners has done lovely things to my skin. She does get results, its undeniable. You just have to concentrate on the root of her routine and filter out the stuff thats a bit over the top.

Kundry · 21/06/2015 10:59

She always insists 'your skin is different everyday'. Given your skin takes 6 weeks to turn over how can a product you apply once and then switch to something else, really have any lasting impact and how helpful can the review be beyond 'it felt nice, the ingredients are good'. A really helpful review would be what happened after 6 weeks of continuous use.

She also said in the video that she likes brands with a doctor at the heart ie based on proper evidence. Great, so do I. So why all the Tata Harper love???

However if she gets the population of the UK acid toning, she should receive a medal as it does wonders for your skin.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/06/2015 11:25

I don't follow her routine (I don't double cleanse, I don't acid tone daily and I don't use a hydrating toner) and I find her writing style a little off at times but on the whole, I like the blog. She always says that the products she recommends suit her but might not necessarily suit other skin types or budgets and seems realistic that not everyone has £300 a month to spend on their skincare routine.

As for getting shirty about the amount if product she has, it's her job to review this stuff. What did you expect to see?!

She says her skin changes regularly, I suspect she means things like waking up with a spot, waking up with a dry patch or tightness, waking up a bit greasier than normal. Stuff that doesn't necessarily need full skin turnover to show up. Of course, you could argue that her skin is greasy/tight/spotty/whatever because it is reacting to product overload but who knows?

I think most of us are sensible adults and can make a judgement on what we see and so watch/read this stuff as entertainment rather than cold, scientific fact. [shrug]

As for the Dr stuff, she said she only has stuff from Drs and people with a skincare background (so facialists included) hence why she has stuff from tata harper & Kate Somerville.

TurnipCake · 21/06/2015 11:28

As someone said upthread, I preferred the Sali Hughes videos with people who aren't in the industry (Brix Smith-Start for instance, that was lovely).

Having watched the videos I feel that Sali is a bit of a nodding dog depending on what the person likes (Brix raved about Bioderma, CH quickly mentioned she has no Bioderma in her house and it was quickly glossed over)

Having seen the CH video, it all just looked very wasteful and when I read of a new devotee to her, they're always lambasting themselves with products (Ok, so I need this balm cleanser, an acid toner, SPF, moisturiser, retinol, 100 flannels, what else?!) hopefully after seeing this video they might slow down a bit and think about what the skin actually needs.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 21/06/2015 11:52

Definitely agree about the acid toner, the one game changing product IME, and mine, as I keep saying is a cheap Olay one.
I started double cleansing and acid toning after CH. And spending LESS on moisturiser, which I always felt was the most important product. I realise now it's not.
I like her irreverence, like the fact she says something about once you're over 40 no amount of crushed rosehip seeds is going to make you look 25 despite what Trilogy and co would like you to think.
I suppose also that if trying beauty stuff was my job, then I'd spend all my time chopping and changing and trying as many as possible...

Kundry · 21/06/2015 12:25

DrankSangria totally agree about the crushed rosehip comment Grin

I think the core routine of non-foaming cleanser, acid tone, retinol, spend less on moisturiser, SPF is great. It can be hard to fine it though under double cleansing, hydrating toners, serums, essences (had no idea these even existed!), oils, etc etc.

FrugalFashionista · 21/06/2015 19:17

I watched the two LA episodes. I have passed through LA a couple of times recently on work trips and wanted a beauty insider to show me what I was missing. I expected her to unearth hidden beauty havens or at least do some good Sephora, Target, drugstore hauls, and possibly explore Koreatown goodies. But the videos have zero products, they are just about her manning the Pixi booth at some cosmetics fair and someone flipping pizzas - absolutely not worth your time!!!

Picachew · 21/06/2015 20:02

I agree with the PP who said CH may have shot herself in the foot with this video. I'm irritated with the Tata Harper and Zelens push.

I get she has to make money but it's stepped up a gear for me. Plus finding out she uses things just a few times. I buy a product to work long term, not to see if I like the feel and smell.

She's off my Christmas card list after this. Sad face. :(

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 21:09

Haven't seen the LA videos yet Frugal but I'll be a bit disappointed if this is it - I wanted an insight into these U.S. places too. Like going to Paris and not doing a pharmacie haul.

I totally hear what people are saying about waste with the sheer amount of product in the videos, but is it really any different to getting a peek in Vicky Beckham's shoe cupboard, for those who love shoes? I find the idea of that dull, but the disdain feels a wee bit like people coming on a luxury handbag thread to get upset at anyone spending money on a bag. For me, face over bag (only just, and both if I can afford).

In terms of rigour,I'd imagine that like anything else you'd get a feel for testing with experience, I know friends of mine who work in the industry can tell within a couple of wears if something is good for them or not, whereas I take a long while, but isn't that part of the deal when you take advice from a trusted source?

Anyway - as I said above, I'm probably biased because CH changed my life face, but to me, this is a skincare guru sharing her stash, nothing more. I agree though I'd love to see more Target hauls, French pharmacie and the like.

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 21:11

Has anyone on that note got a link to anyone who does French hauls and reviews? I might be missing out...

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 21:27

Cheers Otillia, I love her but have watched more make up demos than skincare, will give this a look (love anything French pharmacie to be honest, I'm easily pleased...!)

OttiliaVonBCup · 21/06/2015 21:30

I love French pharmacies.
I usually pretend I have to buy something serious so they let me look in peace.
I end up with tons of soluble aspirin at the end of the summer holidays.

Cloggal · 21/06/2015 21:35

Compeed/blister pads for me (usually also necessary!) Smile

jasmine1979 · 21/06/2015 21:43

I think it's different to looking at Victoria Beckham's shoe cupboard because all these products generally have a short shelf life. Good shoes can last a lifetime if cared for.

I had a quick scan of all my skincare products and many of them have a shelf life of 6 months -2 years max. There is no possible way that those items can be used within that time, and also most importantly trialled effectively for reviews to be of much use?

The mascaras actually annoyed me more than all the skincare though. I am pretty hot on eye health and mascaras really need to be thrown away after 3 months max once opened. It's pretty important although I know lots of people ignore the idea. It does sadly make me question hygeine standards when I see hoards of stuff stashed all over the place like that. It looked pretty messy. Smile

Whilst I'll happily admit I enjoyed the video and do like Caroline, I do also agree that it was of little use. It was simply Caroline raking through the boxes muttering a few incoherant names here and there and Sali just being a nodding dog. It was interesting that The body shop was one of the products that she flagged up and made sure to show, because I'm pretty sure she did some work with The Body shop a short while back promoting their products?
I also didn't like the name dropping of her fellow bloggers under the same management as her in the first video. Pixiwoo,Zoe, Ruth, Tanya Burr etc. Confused

On a shallow note, this is the first time I've seen her in video and I thought she was much slimmer and prettier than I'd previously thought her to be from photos.

Picachew · 21/06/2015 23:02

Way different to shoes. Shoes can be archived, skincare can't. I'm really annoyed by the mascara too. I'm so disappointed by the whole thing. I know she won't care one bit but I was quite a devotee. I feel a bit of a fool for believing the hype.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/06/2015 23:09

I also didn't like the name dropping of her fellow bloggers under the same management as her in the first video. Pixiwoo,Zoe, Ruth, Tanya Burr etc.

Yy, she is a GleamBot. To be fair to her she is nowhere near as bad as a the younger ones for blantant promotion of other Gleamers blogs/channels. Lots of them seem to have forced 'friendships' with other bloggers under the same management team - cue, awkward posed Instagram pics of lunches and 'shopping trips' (where they were given a gift card to spend by the brand and didn't disclose it to readers/viewers). Shady as fuck. That's more of an overall comment on the underhand shit in the industry and the puppet-masters (management companies like Gleam) than CH.

MitzyLeFrouf · 21/06/2015 23:10

She needs to Marie Kondo that bedroom!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/06/2015 23:12

Although I must say, I like Ruth. She tests her skincare for a month before commenting on it and seems to be quite relatable and honest.

I cannot stand Burr or Zoella but then I am not in their demographic.
