Just spent an enjoyable hour watching sali's in the bathroom with Caroline hirons any wondered if anyone knows where sali's dress in from? Really like the colourful buttons: m.youtube.com/watch?v=YucPnS4j4kQ

I don't mind fashion blogs so much. They're playing the same game but at least with clothes, you can see what you're getting. You wouldn't just read a recommendation then buy; you can look at it, try it on, decide if it suits you etc.

With skin care you're basically buying a wish and a promise - that's why I think these blogs are so dishonest. At least with adverts you know where you are and no-one's pretending to be your best friend.

OttiliaVonBCup · 22/06/2015 19:23

I use Makeup alley for my research as well, like Jasmin. Once you've weeded out some clearly inane reviews the rest is really helpful.
Real people with real experience of what they use.

The freebies are easy to spot, usually the same thing all over the blogs like a rash.

Sometimes though I read a post, and the blogger has casually picked up everything from a recently launched makeup artist line, foundation, primer, eyeshadow palette, mascara, concealer, lip pencil, lipstick, and fuck knows what else, and this all easily cost over a £150, how, just how? And that happens all the time.

Kundry · 22/06/2015 19:48

I love a reviewer who is prepared to post a bad review of something. Some of them, absolutely everything is marvellous. British Beauty Blogger fairly often says something has been terrible, or she likes something but the price point is wrong or similar. And Dr Sam Bunting in her journalism will also be v clear about stuff she thinks is rubbish.

I can forgive a lot if it's seems that sometimes some honesty is happening. Or if a genuine skill is being demonstrated like Lisa Eldridge's makeup videos. Lisa as well clearly has a lot of brand recommendations but you can pick up which products she really likes as she uses them over and over again, regardless of what else is going on at the time.

Annarose2014 · 22/06/2015 22:25

Another tip is if they name the store, i.e. say "Topshop Haul" instead of "Fashion Haul". Or the notorious "Sephora Haul" which means "we'll give you a $100 gift card as long as you put Sephora in the title".

Agree that Essie is......messy.

condominoes · 22/06/2015 22:50

I really like lisa Eldridge. Never seen an ad before her videos

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 22:50

Love Lisa, she's very soothing.

jasmine1979 · 22/06/2015 22:51

I agree Kundry. I also think that negative reviews can be very helpful. For example if they are saying that the product didn't work for them because it's too rich and they have oily skin, then that can be useful info for someone that actually requires a product for dry skin.

I also agree Ottilia about bloggers suddenly "picking up" an entire collection of a newly released line. It then becomes very obvious that it was sent by the pr company. As well as the cost, nobody would do that as not every colour of lipstick is going to suit them for example.
I swear some people probably started blogging to enable their hoarding tendencies. Smile

Picachew · 22/06/2015 22:52

Lisa Eldridge is Lancome's Creative Director though.

findingmyfeet12 · 22/06/2015 22:57

I've never seen Lisa overly promote any Lancôme products. I believe her reviews and recommendations to be fair and based on years of experience. I like one of her videos where she talks about classic products that have been in her kit for many years.

jasmine1979 · 22/06/2015 23:07

I agree. I think Lisa has always been very clear in what she likes and doesn't like. She created products for no7 before and was always upfront about it. She also did a series of videos for Chanel for a while.
I actually believe she tends to use the products she thinks will do the best job, and isn't scared of using much cheaper brands either.
She also did a video talking about how when she got the job with Lancome, her video content wouldn't change, and as far as I know she has kept to her word? Smile

Annarose2014 · 22/06/2015 23:29

Yeah, her last video was based on an editorial look with Lancome products, but she used entirely non-Lancome products to recreate it.

diggerdigsdogs · 23/06/2015 07:37

Actually I thought the video was fascinating because you could see which products she had recently reviewed but still hadn't made it into her bathroom.

OttiliaVonBCup · 23/06/2015 07:53

Lisa Eldridge seems to use everything under the sun, she's been upfront about who she works for and yes, she gives substitution for Lancome products.

It's easier to see when works for you with make up though, if you're a viewer, it's immediate when you put in on, I watch her for technique and ideas, but I know what will suit me.

Skin care is more of a investment, it's more of building up a trust relationship with the public/us.

flippinada · 23/06/2015 18:57

I was really looking forward to watching this as I really like Ms Hirons and Ms Hughes but just didn't enjoy it as much as the previous one.

I love makeup and skincare myself but the sheer number of products was overwhelming and made me feel a bit icky.

The stuff about Gleam is a revelation...I didn't realise how far their tentacles spread!

findingmyfeet12 · 23/06/2015 19:26

The fact that CH even mentioned the young bloggers in a serious interview with a journalist like SH is embarrassing.

Picachew · 23/06/2015 19:38

I don't think it was meant to be a serious interview with a journalist - is SH even a journalist, she's a beauty guru isn't she?

To me it's pure flimflam and frippery. I felt icky too and have unsubscribed.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/06/2015 19:44

Well she's worked in beauty journalism for a long time so yes I'd say she's a journalist. I think she writes well and I've enjoyed some of the non-beauty related articles she's written for The Pool.

findingmyfeet12 · 23/06/2015 19:46

I thought she had a column in The Guardian?

flippinada · 23/06/2015 19:52

Yes that jarred a bit with me. A lot of the vloggers (is that the right word) are essentially doing paid advertorials for high end stuff.

No matter how likable or hard working they are that is very unethical, imo, when your main audience is teens.

Also don't trust bloggers/vloggers who like everything (I can think of at least one but won't name names). Nobody likes everything, ffs! Brands must just love them.

flippinada · 23/06/2015 20:00

I really like Sali Hughes' writing. The story of how she got into the career she's in is fascinating.

condominoes · 23/06/2015 20:09

Serious interview? Journalist? Haha Grin

I finally watched it last night. Worst of Sali Hughes videos yet. Just product after product pulled out. No substance or anything of interest.

And How Caroline copes with all of that mess and product everywhere - would send me bananas!

findingmyfeet12 · 23/06/2015 20:12

Sali is absolutely a journalist and has interviewed some of the biggest names in the industry. She seems to have put a lot of effort into this series of videos and I can't imagine she's want to speak to someone who isn't credible.

Picachew · 23/06/2015 20:23

The column she writes in the guardian is about beauty products isn't it? Hardly journalism. More like a reviewer.

findingmyfeet12 · 23/06/2015 20:26

I disagree - I would say journalist. Although I've not read it I think she has recently published a beauty book as well.

condominoes · 23/06/2015 20:30

Beauty writer. I wouldn't say journalist. Journalists do news
