I know this has been done before and posters have got flamed but I'd really like some suggestions.

I'll go over the budget if its something I really like, but not wildly so.

I probably looking for more of a tote style rather than clutch.
Thanks.

That anya hindmarch is gorgeous! That's going on my list for when ds1 finishes nursery next year :)

LightastheBreeze · 23/08/2014 11:46

Spending this amount on a bag is no different to spending on expensive hobbies, Christmas, nice furniture etc, so I can never understand why people get so uptight about it. I choose to spend about £50-100 on a bag which is also a lot for some people, but if I wanted an expensive one I wouldn't expect people to judge.

Some of the bags linked to are lovely but I don't have the lifestyle for them, hope you get a nice bag OP whether it cost £500 or £2000.

BrandyAlexander · 23/08/2014 11:48

Gah. The thing is that the clue to what the thread is about is quite clear in the title so I don't see the comments highlighted as naive or insensitive for this thread. Yes, if those same comments were to appear on a thread "oh shit, I have no idea how I am going to feed my dcs this week" then I would happily turn up there myself just to tell them to fuck off.

There is also this MN assumption that all well off folks have no idea what it's like to be poor or have no empathy. Okay then.

Returning to the thread...... I have seen some lovely MJ bags linked here over the years which I have really liked. Never got round to owning one but I do like them.

Greengardenpixie · 23/08/2014 11:49

Well she shouldnt have posted..im sorry. Imo £900 on a bag is absolutely obscene..regardless of income... and 25K??? dont get me started!!! regardless of what the occasion is. ...but then, thats my opinion.

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/08/2014 11:54

You see I don't think buying a bag made by craftsman earning a fair wage is obscene, like Bottega Veneta.

I think its worse to buy some sweatshop produced crap.

But its really down to the individual and their budget and what they want to spend money on. Perhaps no-one should buy expensive houses either, just the very minimum they need?

Greengardenpixie · 23/08/2014 11:58

I agree, that its sheer craftsmen ship but in all fairness, the craftsment probably dont see half of that £900

PenisesAreNotPink · 23/08/2014 11:59

Do you already have an Anya maxi zip? The grey two tone or navy two tone is lovely.

I always thought S and B was the one place you could talk about things that cost money without folk bitching?

I can't afford a new Maxi Zip but I have it on permanent watch on EBay and one day I will get one.

I got my Manolo Blahniks sandals that I've wanted for 8 years that way - the ones Carrie was wearing when she got mugged (Sedaraby) Grin

Eventually I got a pair for £80, they're my favourite things ever.

Just because I don't have a high income doesn't mean I don't like nice things or that I can't contribute a comment or be interested in fashion.

I love good quality things and have a list of stuff on permanent watch on EBay and eventually I always get them. I've waited years for things.

I've got an Anya Valorie clutch, all sparkly and beautiful - bought at the wrong time of year for sparkles ie. January when no one has any money or wants to buy party bags. - I paid £89 for it, it's in the most desirable colour and I now have an undateable party bag forever. It's so lovely that I don't need another.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/08/2014 12:06

Blueberries if you like classic bags have a look at aspinal?

I have a Reed Krakoff bag and think the quality is excellent. Good for work.

If I had £900 for a bag I think I'd either wait for sales (risky) or try to buy it at an airport or abroad to get a bit more for my money. That is me though :)

I don't get the flaming either, it only seems to happen re: bags. Why not expensive shoes? At least bags get used every single day, unlike a pair of high end party heels or something Hmm

aylesburyduck · 23/08/2014 12:08

Not in response to OP but I am currently saving up for a chanel bag. I have wanted to own one for years.

My point is that I am now in a position to put money aside to do so and it will be something to cherish and eventually an heirloom piece.

The money we have to spend on ourselves is of no concern to anyone else. If the title of the thread offends don't bloody read it!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/08/2014 12:23

Which none of us asked for. This isn't a debate thread. It's a handbag thread in style and beauty. If you want a debate start a thread inviting debate. The OP didn't.

Shia · 23/08/2014 12:48

No one needs to drive around in a Mercedes when they make Skoda's that can take you from A to B, but no one will slate you for wanting to buy a more upmarket car do they?

I've been in all positions, well off, broke and now somewhere in the middle.

Sometimes when I've been on the poorer end I've spent more on luxury items because they offer better value for money in the long run. They are made to last and be passed on.

The op clearly stated the amount in the title, so if anyone thinks it's frivolous to spend that much or is suffering money problems they would have no need to read this thread.

Apatite1 · 23/08/2014 12:55

Sigh. I wonder what percentage of weekly/monthly/yearly salary the great and good of mumsnet think is acceptable to spend on a bag? At which point can the poor OP expect to be left in peace to ask a question? No, don't answer I'm sure the answer will still be less than £50.

Do people go onto holiday threads and say the same? About how it's disgraceful to go to Spain when you could get a caravan in Skegness for a quarter of the price?

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 23/08/2014 13:04

I spend loads on alcohol, hobbies, holidays, entertainment and bags. I love Dior bags which cost 2-3k each. There you go. I also contribute lots to the economy in terms paying of tax and to charities. I've also been dirt poor where I would have thought a 25k salary would make you feel so rich.

bigkidsdidit · 23/08/2014 13:05

Lol at 'I spend loads on alcohol' Grin

applecrumbleandcream · 23/08/2014 13:11

I don't have a problem with those who can afford it spending £900 on a bag or £25k on a bag. That's just the way of the world. I'm after the Metallic blue or oilslick Pashli satchel but I would have to save for many months for it. The problem I know I would have is actually parting with the money as although I'd love it, it is after all just a bag and I'd feel guilty when I know there's other things we need.

shopafrolic · 23/08/2014 13:12

I can absolutely recommend the Anya Maxi Zip satchel - it is a fabulous bag, loads of useful pockets and you don't have to zip it up all the time as it has a magnetic closure on the flap which is very useful. I bought mine from this site in the sale - they come up quite a lot. Maybe worth a wait?

santamarianovella · 23/08/2014 13:28

greengarden did any of the regular high end bags Owners on this thread, ever posted on a £50 maximum budget thread? In a manner similar to yours? Did armani mrsCB or novice ever say things like " that's all?" I bet they will look and link bags within that price range, and help out if opinions are needed,

Why don't you go and flame those who buy cheap knockoff? Cause that's a real crime in my opinion

lurkingaround · 23/08/2014 13:36

The polarised opinions that come out on bag threads always amazes me.
If you love them and have the money, why not.

It's fascinating. I think you could ask opinions on spending ridiculous money on absolutely anything else (a jag anyone?) and it wouldn't provoke the vitriol a bag thread provokes.

What is it about bags??

LEMmingaround · 23/08/2014 13:38

Please don't laugh at me but i havea budget of £50 and would love a leather bag. I didn't realise you even COULD spend £900 on a bag. We paid less than that for our van

Had to laugh at the comment about pets being a waste. I absolutely disagree, my cat helped me through chemo she sat on my lap something she never did before and refused to move! The pleasure an animal brings to me and my family is much more important than a handbag..........
