Chopping all my hair off...

I'm feeling in need of a change, so this week I've decided to go from my past-shoulder-length hair, to next to nothing (something like the picture, but darker hair).

I have a long neck so I'm hoping to be able to pull it off, but have no idea about styling or even what cut I'm asking for.

My hair is curly/wavy and I don't want it shaved or shaped too severely.

Does anyone have any tips and more importantly, what cut am I asking for?!

Ignore her! She knows not of what she speaks.

I remember trying to persuade my dm to cut hers short when she was early 50s, and she had a very odd idea that she was too old for it to grow back properly if she didn't like it (she has very thick hair, so really not a worry).

It would have really suited her.

Dm really likes it on me. But she probably would have cautioned me if I'd told her (I only told dh).

I bet everyone said to Pamela Anderson that her hair kept her young. Now it's clear how much younger and better she looks with it short.

Unless your mum has immaculate style and is excellent at telling friends what does and does not suit them, I wouldn't listen to a word of it.

Actually I wouldn't listen even if that were the case. You often can't tell what works until you try it.

You speak the truth!! Wise wise lady. She's not what you would call stylish. I am an only child and I remember very vividly telling me when I was very very young that I should always make sure I have lots of hair "to frame your face". Implying... Hide that ugly face!

tomblibooo · 24/09/2014 09:30

This is the one that I want

That is lovely!

I do think lots of people have these set "rules" that someone way-back-when probably told them and they are determined to keep to.

I just remember that my dm made me brush my (curly and otherwise ringletty) hair everyday before school. We never had conditioner either, so it was just a ball of fuzz.

Apparently that way it was tidy Hmm

I had no idea how to have nice curly hair, so straightened it for years and years.

I am now embracing my natural curl to have funky, messy, short hair. I think my dm came over a bit funny when I told her I now never brush my hair, I just make it messier :o

mine is curly/wavy too! and yes, i have spent my entire life ironing it.

tomblibooo · 24/09/2014 09:57

by the way - I am snappy cow. I name changed.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 24/09/2014 10:07

:) I see, hello snappy-tombli

I blame poor hair choices passed down by parents. My dm used to go on about how lovely my hair was curly, why didn't I leave it natural? Which of course meant "a ball of frizz".

We should not respect these people's hair choices! We should forge our own path!

I can picture dm saying something like, "oh, that's rather... Drastic. Are you sure it would suit you? There's no going back!"

Which would have panicked me. And I can honestly say I have no regrets. I have had a couple of bad hair days (who doesn't?) but the application of a few hair clips has fixed it (whereas in the past I would just have scraped it back into a ponytail and looked godawful).

yes - she is very controlling and I have quite a few self esteem issues brought on in part (completely) because of her 'helpful' comments. But I have had the same hair style now for 32 years. I'm bored stiff!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 24/09/2014 10:37

Do it :) it'll be a (literal) weight off your shoulders. And if your dm hates it then you have confirmation that you look great :o

Ha ha!! I'm doing it. This Saturday. Terrified but exhilarated for first time in a very very long time.

pardonmytits · 24/09/2014 16:40

Mine is all coming off tomorrow evening. Eek!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 24/09/2014 17:53

Hurray, Pardon!

I've just been for a trim and taken off another inch or so :)

I am very pixie-ish now

Another picture? Smile

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 24/09/2014 20:11

It's not got a lot of wax in it at the moment, so may look a bit flatter than it will when I've texturised...

Not a huge transformation, but I like it!

Marking my place in this thread as I'm off to get mine done next Wednesday, despite all my kids telling me not to

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 25/09/2014 11:43

What do kids know?

Dd has even said she wants shorter hair now :o

Stripeybum · 25/09/2014 12:44

Thank you , thats what I was thinking too. Its only hair and it will grow back, hopefully Grin

pardonmytits · 26/09/2014 08:17

Gasp! Did it :) Love it. Although I'm slightly panicking about what happens when I have to style it myself after I wash it! Oh well, I'm sure I can always just wear a hat...;)

pardon That looks FAB - go you!

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 26/09/2014 09:25

Pardon, that looks amazing! I know what you mean about the styling, but play around with what works for you :) one of my favourite styles so far has been just adding a hair clip to the front :o (probably doesn't really count as a "style" but completely changed the look).

Glad you love it!

Love it pardon it looks great

pardonmytits · 28/09/2014 10:57

Thank you all :) It was so odd washing it for the first time - was trying to rinse out a phantom ponytail!

Still like it, mostly. But it's going to take a bit of getting used to...

Gaia81 · 28/09/2014 12:23

Loving this thread, I keep toying with the idea but never actually carry it through.

The big downside for me is the thought of frequent trips to the hairdresser, I've been once in the past 8 years.

On the other hand I swim a lot and trying to keep my hair in ok condition is a bit of a nightmare too.
