Chopping all my hair off...

I'm feeling in need of a change, so this week I've decided to go from my past-shoulder-length hair, to next to nothing (something like the picture, but darker hair).

I have a long neck so I'm hoping to be able to pull it off, but have no idea about styling or even what cut I'm asking for.

My hair is curly/wavy and I don't want it shaved or shaped too severely.

Does anyone have any tips and more importantly, what cut am I asking for?!

It'll take you hours!

I had my long-ish hair cut short about 8 weeks ago. It was well past my shoulders, and I had it cut into a short layered bob. My only regret is not having done this years ago. I feel younger, more fashionable, and very liberated. DH loves it, and I've had soooooo many compliments. Although it's growing Very Fast Indeed .......

Petal, that's pretty much how I had it a few years ago :) I loved it too. But have become slovenly.

You sound exactly like me at the start of last year - similar hair types, and wanting a similar short cut! I loved having it short, although I'm growing it again now and it's nearly shoulder length again. Good value products that I found useful were Dax Wave & Groom wax for spikier days (it's like a budget version of Tigi Bedhead, and smells nice), and for sleeker days when you want to blow dry it straight-ish, use a teeny bit of Brylcreem on wet hair (but it has to be the old style stuff in the red pot). Also, stock up on funky hair clips etc, because they will be your friend on a bad hair day.

I started growing mine again after I went for a trim after my usual stylist had moved on, and got a scary-short cut. Made me look about 15 years older. I've had short hair several times in my life but always gravitate back to longer hair ...

My hair is almost exactly like the second pic you posted op, but shorter at the back. It's fine and curly/wavy and having it short really suits me (also have a long neck!). It took me a long while to give up on long hair but short is soooo much better. I use gloss spray or curl booster, depending on what I feel like but do no styling apart from a quick brush and maybe some sparkly hair clips!

Lizzie, excellent news! Do you ask for a particular cut at all?

I had a short pixie cut about 10 years ago and loved it. Would do it again but for several reasons - DP not a fan, like a previous poster, and also I am not as slim as I was then and feel that as a very curvy pear shape I need something going on in the head department. Plus am 35 and have had a series of bobs and pixies since my teens, so feel like it's last chance saloon to grow it out a bit and see what long hair is like Grin

But I love all the pictures posted and am sure I'll have short hair again at some point.

Thanks Anathema :)

I think that's how I was feeling, but now it's long I end up just tying it back for the ease of it.

I will post back if I hate it.

At least if it's a rubbish cut it'll be ready for a restyle in a month...

Good luck! Unlike LizzieMint I have an average neck. Also I have a teeny short face, and hair anywhere below my ears makes me look stumpy - nothing from mouth to chest except hair. The first time I got mine cut properly short I was amazed and said "I look like a Cluedo piece!" I really, really don't but I have a jawline now. I wish I had done it decades before I did.

Also, re care: my mum (70s) was drying her hair the other day when I was up visiting and asked if I needed it - I had to tell her that these days, I don't even brush (or comb) it. Pushing it around with fingers works wet or dry. Disclosure: I have an office job and have not to date been on a red carpet.

Black & White hairdressing pomade is lovely - it smells great and it doesn't leave your hands all claggy.

See, I would love to have a pixie cut, but I just am not prepared to have to go to (and pay for) a haircut every month. I think I've gone about five times in my life so far. My hair is a nest. But at least it costs me nothing.

Does anyone here trim their own pixie cut????

Report
monsterowl · 06/08/2014 20:05

Castlemilk I last had a haircut by a hairdresser in May last year, when she cut it far too short, almost a buzz cut. I have been growing it since and in the early days I cut the bottom section of the back several times so that the rest of it could catch up. No way was I going to pay 40 just to ask someone to trim the back! It looked fine, even when I was straightening it. Admittedly other people had a better view of it than me ...

I managed every 6-8 weeks for cutting and colouring, but I was quite happy to go really short and let it grow until the bits on the back of my neck started annoying me. Michelle Williams was my hairspiration.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 06/08/2014 20:41

6-8 weeks I probably realistically what'll end up happening, I'm hoping it'll go from short and funky to a bit longer and curly in that time.

I currently average one cut a year maximum. But my hair really needs to be done more often, it's got horrible ends.

Keep the product recommendations coming! I'm making a list :)

After my cancer, I went nuts and shaved my shoulder length hair off. It's now about three inches long and best thing I ever did. I get told I look younger, and it dries in seconds. No more faff ing about!

Shona, I am loving the idea of instant dry hair :) particularly as I sit here, post-bath, wondering if I can be bothered to dry it before bed or accept the inevitable rat's nest in the morning.

Dh once trimmed my cropped hair, we were both a bit tipsy. The hairdresser openly laughed at me when she saw it

I went short 2 weeks ago, and feel much better for it. Was so BORED by straightening my past-shoulder length hair, or tying it up in a ponytail for work. DH would lean on it in bed and pull it... on windy days it whipped me in the face. It used to take ages to dry, now its dried, straightened and product applied in less than 15 mins. Only downside is I cant just tie it up on bad hair days.

I loved my short hair too - have had it cropped on and off since I was 17.

But you do have to DO it every day - I used to wake up looking like sonic the hedgehog every morning. It needed washing, blow drying and styling every day. I have a bit of a curl that needs taming. But I timed it once and it took less than 2 mins to dry it!

(Tigi beadhead is fab)

And no you can't cut it yourself. You will look a fright Grin. I have to go every 5 weeks when it's short, but it does grow v fast.

Currently have a bob for a change, but will def have short hair again. Good luck!
