Styles you don't admire?

First of all I apologise for the title of this post, I couldn't think of a better way to explain it! Do you have a style that is popular at the moment that you absolutely loathe ? The reason I ask this is because, today I have been out in my local town and noticed a lot of women wearing a certain type of look, but not sure how to describe it. Quilted fitted jackets, tightish or bootleg jeans, some sort of boots, animal print scarf, designer handbag and gold jewellery. I'm really not keen on this look, but they might not be keen on mine, so each to their own! Just wondered if anyone else feels this way about certain looks?

Black with brown can be very chic. I wear it regularly. The end.

AmberNectarine · 01/03/2014 16:44

In fairness to Myleene that outfit is actually from 2004.

Anna1976 · 01/03/2014 16:47

Lj8893, you're probably qualified to say - is what's wrong with what i mentioned that I look like I"m not making an effort? Cos when i used to make an effort for work and wear shirts and trousers, they always looked like unironed rags within about an hour of being put on. These days I don't work in that area any more, so don't have to dress up as much, thus was faintly surprised to discover that people still constantly tell me off about my appearance.

Mrsap · 01/03/2014 16:50

I have v few issues with any style tbh. Some are not for me right now. I've also learnt to never say never.

Fashion is supposed to be fun and a bit fickle. If you're not into fashion, I care not either. Whatever works for you.

Ps. Black and brown is fine, as is black and navy and stripes and animal print.

YokoUhOh · 01/03/2014 16:52

Anna when I was preggerz'n'peng (I joke) I spent a week in Bordeaux. Comments were usually along the lines of 'Qu'est-ce qu'elle est moche!'. I just think they can't cope with the magpie-like sartorial leanings of the Brits, we're just too fashion-forward for them :(

Wagwarn tethers - at last we meet on here!

tethersend · 01/03/2014 17:03

My French in laws look at me slack-jawed in horror Grin

YokoUhOh · 01/03/2014 17:06

Of course belle-mère et beau-père! I don't know about you, but I find being a strawberry-blonde is a definite curve-ball for the French...

flippinada · 01/03/2014 17:09

Mrsap I'm nodding in agreement.

I strongly suspect that I'm approaching the age where it's almost obligatory to tut at the fashion choices made by people younger than me.

PS (to no-one in particular, just saying) I love leggings and wear them instead of tights. Much comfier!

tethersend · 01/03/2014 17:10

Blimey, yes- am ginger too. I think for them, it's the final insult Grin

MmeGuillotine · 01/03/2014 17:11

Ooh, I'm a soon to be forty year old goth (and I LOVE wearing Vivien of Holloway dresses)! I don't know if I'll still be dressing this way at fifty but as I've been an alternative dresser since primary school, I can't really imagine doing anything else. :)

As for the styles that I'm not particularly enamoured with - I find the way that most old women seem to dress a bit depressing, I suppose? All those dreary colours. I'd like to be a bit more like Vivienne Westwood when I'm in my seventies as she looks amazing. :)

mathanxiety · 01/03/2014 17:13

Oh no, avoid the kitten heels and red lipstick and tea dresses at all costs. Stay away from ballet pumps too. But I still think the brown boots with black outfit needs a rethink. The outfit sounds fine.

Do your eyebrows or get them done, and use a little light coloured pencil to bring them out. Get some light honey coloured highlights in your hair. Use a little powder blush over moisturiser on your face along with neutral lipstick. No need for foundation or any brightness in the blush -- avoid reds and bronzers, go for peach and peachy pinks but not bubble gum shades. Use a cream shadow in a neutral shade on your eyes - apply with fingertips. Or a light grey coutouring pencil applied near the lashes on the eyelid. Use a touch of mascara on the outside lashes (far left of left eye, far right of right eye). I think the French appreciate a look that is subtle but says you care.

If you get conjunctivitis, throw out your applicator/brush/little sponge.

CuntyBunty · 01/03/2014 17:14

I think the only look I really hate is the TOWIE orange look with the "porno heels".

I love the grunge revival, it's me and I also have a flared 50's dress with a massive petticoat for special occasions.

I sometimes wear a bobble hat with a full face of make up too...

specialsubject · 01/03/2014 17:18

high heels that make the wearer walk like a duck - anything over an inch or so high usually does this. Just shouts 'fashion victim'
transparent leggings. (ones you can't see through are fine)
animal print
big colourful scarves on all black outfits.
non-waterproof coats in the rain.

TeacupDrama · 01/03/2014 17:27

ugg boots
leggings as trousers
skinny jeans only moderately better
heeled trainers
no eyebrows or cleopatra eyebrows
orange make up
duvet coats

Mrsap · 01/03/2014 17:35

I think I've spent so much of my life being tutted at (v conservative family) that I just like to leave each to their own.

I try to wear whatever suits me best (although I have looked back at old pics in horror BlushBlush).

A close friend told me when I was 24 that I was too old to wear denim and I should grow up. that was the day I decided not to listen to others. 24 years later I still wear a lot of denim. She on the other hand looks "nice" but is as dull as shit.

flippinada · 01/03/2014 17:39

I think that's fair enough. I may tut inwardly but I'd never dream of telling anyone what they should or shouldn't wear.

I'm sure someone somewhere has looked at me and thought look at the state of her, but so what!

quirkychick · 01/03/2014 17:48

Don't like the overdone towie look, personally. Quite like the distressed/grungy vibe. But that's always been me.

I do like to see a variety of looks but dislike anything inappropriate like no socks/bare ankles in winter or summer clothes as soon as the sun shines. Plenty of nice stuff you can wear that's warm and you just look silly. I am getting old Grin.

Anna1976 · 01/03/2014 18:44

YokoUhOh, thankyou, you've made my weekend by introducing the word "peng" to my vocabulary, and MarmaladeTwatkins' thread about the phrase "preggers'n'peng"... Grin

Mathanxiety, thanks for the advice, will give it a go and see if i can blend in a bit better. Or become well peng. Or something. Smile

Ujjayi · 01/03/2014 19:02

Agree with Marsha that "any style over no style" is preferable. I do find it quite depressing how blandly so many people dress.

MmeGuillotine - Dame Viv is my icon too. I dress to please myself and to reflect who I am. I am certain there are people who have WTAF moments when they see me but who cares? Grin

Fashion should be fun & frivolous and definitely not just the preserve of the young.

Sicaq · 01/03/2014 20:02

To be fair I do own a lot of the stuff mentioned on here, but meh - it's all meant in good fun (I think ...) And if anyone wants to mention unkempt wavy hair which I utterly refuse to make conform - I mean, straighten - I'll hold my hand up to that one too.

mathanxiety · 01/03/2014 20:03

I kinda love the Sharon Osborne look on older ladies. If you do it like Sharon Osborne does then it's cool in an ironic sort of way. Bit there's a fine line between doing it right and making a holy show of yourself.

burnishedsilver · 01/03/2014 20:17

Anna it sounds like you look like you don't care, but you must care. If you didn't care you wouldn't be reading s&b. The ponytail, no make up, wild eyebrows all sounds a bit unloved. Treat yourself.

TheBigBumTheory · 01/03/2014 20:17

I'm fairly oblivious to what people wear BUT

What are those jackets with the peculiar back hem that drops and splits with toggly bits hanging off? Usually khaki coloured. Is there a name for them? Just makes me think of a scraggy old sheep with dried on shitty bits swinging below their arses.Grin

quirkychick · 01/03/2014 21:28

ujjayi definitely agree that any style over no style. I try to walk a fine line between wearing something on trend and looking too fashiony/samey. I like mixing it up a bit. And still trying to look like me.

bigbumtheory do you mean parkas? I love my parka it is warm and dry on the school run in all the biblical rain. Same with my down coat: saw me through last years big freeze.

TheBigBumTheory · 01/03/2014 21:29

Yes, like a parka but with a funny droopy bit at the back...
