Styles you don't admire?

First of all I apologise for the title of this post, I couldn't think of a better way to explain it! Do you have a style that is popular at the moment that you absolutely loathe ? The reason I ask this is because, today I have been out in my local town and noticed a lot of women wearing a certain type of look, but not sure how to describe it. Quilted fitted jackets, tightish or bootleg jeans, some sort of boots, animal print scarf, designer handbag and gold jewellery. I'm really not keen on this look, but they might not be keen on mine, so each to their own! Just wondered if anyone else feels this way about certain looks?

I have way more admiration for a 50 year old goth than for an identikit 'yummy mummy' trying to look like one of those bloggers in their boring scarves and skinny jeans.

Tea dress + red lipstick is one of my favourite looks. And I look fucking gorgeous .

RedPencilPot · 01/03/2014 11:10

in the summer we will be wearing these!!

Said no one ever!!

LordPalmerston · 01/03/2014 11:11

lol Joe Browns is vile, period.
oh yes - enduring style but show me a 5o something goth who looks good

agree with bankers wives in scarves cliche

phonebox · 01/03/2014 11:48

Dear God RedPencilPot, what the hell are those?

They look like the bloomers I used to put on my replica Victorian porcelain dolls.

burnishedsilver · 01/03/2014 12:20

I'm in Dublin justlikeheaven and I haven't seen any of those shoes. I'll probably start noticing them everywhere now.

Ledkr · 01/03/2014 12:38

I wouldn't feel very free and funky in those trousers, I'd feel like a knobhead!

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 01/03/2014 13:05

I work with someone who will undoubtedly be wearing those monstrorsities this summer Grin She shops almost entirely from Joe Brown's and is 'quirky'. Annoyingly she actually pulls most of the stuff off rather well !

I think they are designed to hide a Tena Ladies extra!!!

LordPalmerston · 01/03/2014 13:20

its the skirt at the back thats even worse

Floisme · 01/03/2014 13:32

Well if 50-something goths can still get under peoples' skin like that then they must be doing something right. Wonder if they'd let me join?

flippinada · 01/03/2014 13:38

Morris I practically live in skinny jeans, am a 12-14 and couldn't give a tupenny ha'penny fart if anyone else thinks it looks good or not - I like them. I also like tea dresses.

On the distaff side, quilted jackets, coated jeans, wedge trainers and those weirdly popular bun things.

Also, seeing young women and teenage girls (actually, anyone) wearing too-dark orangey looking foundation makes me sad.

bunnymother · 01/03/2014 13:52

"agree with bankers wives in scarves" - I don't know any bloggers who are married to bankers, but presumably this refers to (assumed to be) wealthy SAHM? Wondering why they are referred to as someone's wife, given that they are blogging in their own capacity?

Eliza22 · 01/03/2014 14:33

Young girls walking to school with a full face orange makeup.
Overdone brows.
Padded coats
Ballet shoes/pump style footwear suits no-one IMO. Maybe, little girls.
Onesies....get dressed FFS

Nocomet · 01/03/2014 14:52

Totally agree about ballet pumps.

Ok on teens like DD2 who still skip along with a child's bounce to their step and with light summer clothes if you don't/can't wear sandals for work. But in winter on adults trudging about the streets they look down at heel and cheep.

This thread is hilarious. And cathartic. Grin

OK people, can you enlighten me on what is wrong with my look? I live in France, so constantly get sexist boring comments about my appearance not being "comme il faut" from all the old dinosaurs many of whom are younger than me. While I don't care what they think, it would be nice to know what is actually wrong in any sense with someone nearly 40 wearing:

shoulder length hair in ponytail
no makeup (face yellow grey and lips blue and big bags under eyes)
no plucked eyebrows (white blonde, but clearly not plucked ever)
plain black softshell jacket (fell walking kind of thing)
pashmina scarf (left over from days among the posh in the early 2000s)
black icebreaker merino jumpers/ tshirts (more fell walker chic)
black narrow/straight jeans (faded)
brown ankle boots (waterproofed, but not polished)

I know what my mother would think was wrong with all this, but i don't actually want to be my mother.

ShatzePage · 01/03/2014 15:32

I like to wear retro style clothes-love vivien of holloway . At least I don't look like the clones round here-skinny jeans, naice top and heels

tethersend · 01/03/2014 15:39

Rule of thumb, Anna; if you're pissing off the French, you must be doing something right Grin

Anna1976 · 01/03/2014 15:42

tethersend Grin thankyou that's brightened up my day considerably. The longer i live here the more English I feel...

Beaverfeaver · 01/03/2014 16:17

Quilted jackets
Converse hi-tops
Uggs
Palazzo pants
Big oversized stuff described as 'boyfriend'
Platform shoes
Clean wellies

mathanxiety · 01/03/2014 16:29

Anna -- Brown boots and black clothing combo, unplucked eyebrows, ponytail and bare face. Is the softshell jacket shiny? Slightly puffy? What colour pashmina?

Anna1976 · 01/03/2014 16:37

mathanxiety - is that what's wrong? what should I do instead?

My hair is brownish blonde, thin and lank, so having it down doesn't look any good anyway. No style other than a ponytail is even possible without showing large patches of scalp.
Face just never looks any good in makeup - always looks drag queen ish no matter how lightly I put it on, and even Clinique gives me raging conjunctivitis.
Softshell jacket is very, very plain matte black, slim cut, no hood.
Pashmina is grey with very small amounts of pale pink.

It all goes with my bleak mood, but realistically I probably do need to break the cycle of bleakness. Somehow i can't see myself taking up mid life crisis tea dresses, kitten heels and lipstick though.

Lj8893 · 01/03/2014 16:39

I own and wear....

A doughnut
Skinny jeans (size 16)
Leggings
Lots and lots of tea dresses but with a blazer not a cardigan
Scarves
Pencilled in eyebrows

I also wear a pandora which hasn't been said yet but its only a matter of time Grin

Personally, I would prefer someone to put a bit of effort into their appearance than someone wearing ill fitting clothes that don't belong together as an outfit.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/03/2014 16:41

I frequently wear an all black outfit with tan Chelsea boots and a leopard or snake print scarf. Well, I like it!
