I've ordered one of the eBay scarves now. Hoping it does come in a brickyard kind of red as that's one of my best colours.

Anyone advice on hair dye colours? I have medium brown hair with highlights. I want to put it roughly back to my natural colour and cover up the greys. I looked at the Olia colours and picked out 4.3 (second along the brown row on this page )

Do you think it's right or does it have too much red?

jennimoo · 07/11/2013 07:25

And that should be bricky, not the iPhone autocorrect of brickyard!

Triptrap interesting fact about foundation/ colour analysis. Foundation works (obviously) on the colour of the top layer of skin, not the undertone, whereas colour analysis is looking at the tones in the underneath layers - closer to the fat cells under our skin - which is where the blue/yellow tint is. I wear a 'cool' foundation too if I am matched elsewhere.

Burgundy/navy really aren't autumn colours, to my mind. Out of curiosity I sat and rated the winter and spring colours that I always thought were ok on me, and although they aren't as bad as basically all summer colours, they still aren't as good as the autumn palette, iykwim. I believe CMB has navy in its autumn palette though, but I might be wrong. Burgundy is just bad on every autumn I have ever seen (generally use it in the warm/cool part of the analysis process, so I see it on lost clients). It looks like it ought to work, but as soon as it's against skin it looks horrendous.

As an autumn I would still choose navy or charcoal grey over black if I needed a truly formal suit.

charitygirl · 07/11/2013 08:04

Very intresting hopefully. I wish I had all the HoC drapes to play with at home! Burgundy IS a horror on me, as is cool navy. As a rich, deep autumn I do steer clear of the beiges and camels - vair blah and bland on me, and often too 'classic' in style for the very un-classic me. But I can see how they look absolutely wonderful on different autumns.

Jeans - I will always wear some shade of blue jeans I think, but at the paler end of the spectrum. Indigo probably won't be bought again, but I can see why some autumns might go for it - could look good with rust maybe.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/11/2013 08:08

Thanks for that Hopefully. It's all a pain in the bum Grin

So,what 'deeper' reds can an autumn carry off?I know I can carry off deeper reds and they are meant to look great on me (especially when my hair is darker) and bring out a lovely contrast.Which makes it confusing..

onlysettleforbutterflies · 07/11/2013 08:53

I had my colours done with an independent stylist and just got called autumn, no subcontext given. I got given a booklet of fabric colour swatches, which just says autumn on it, navy is in there and I'm always told it looks nice on...not sure what shade of navy that is classed as though.

I'm pretty rubbish with colours, colour names, tones etc. so just try my best to match everything I buy to the swatches. I get the most compliments in burnt orange, mustard and moss green.

I have warm but pale colouring, quite dark brown eyes, strawberry blonde hair.

Snowlike · 07/11/2013 08:57

Whereas charcoal is absolutely horrible on me and black is fine enough - still better than beige. My consultant talked about colours that wear you - these colours didn't make me look awful - you just saw the colour before you saw me, which is fine because often my clothing style is like that....

Possiblyorange · 07/11/2013 10:14

TripTrap basically anything that could be considered a rusty red can go pretty dark - I have a top that is pretty much as dark as burgundy, but is definitely a dark rust (ie slightly browny/orangey) red rather than a bluey red.

Hopefully · 07/11/2013 10:16

Oh, that's me by the way. I regularly NC to post on childbirth/pregnancy threads as I know some of my clients search for my posts on here and I don't like to traumatise them by having tons of childbirth information on the same search as all my S&B posts Grin

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/11/2013 10:31

Thanks Smile my wedding dress (that I never got to wear) was classed as 'Bordeaux' but not the purpley bordeaux some show.It did look fab on me (dress shop wanted me to model it for their pics saying I was perfect for the dress and apparently most couldn't pull it off)

Is this jacket a blue red?www.sdworkwear.co.uk/products/Jack-Murphy-Carey-Ladies-Wax-Jacket.html

I accidentally bought a pinky mauve lipstick this morning.Looked more virally on my hand but on my lips it's a pinky mauvey berry colour and much stronger. It did brighten my pale skin (maybe shown off the whiteness?) and enhanced my peach blush but, when looking in the mirror, all attention was to the centre of my face around the nose area. So,I'm guessing it's not my colour (although it does look awesome against pale skin!) and makes me lean towards autumn more?

Triptrap hard to say for definite, but looks like a summery cherry red type colour, so a blue red. Could be brighter/warmer in RL of course.

Potted there is a warm navy in the HoC swatches - it has a touch of tea about it, it's a kind of marine/petrol navy. Gorgeous colour.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/11/2013 13:29

I've just got back from Tesco, second time today! While there I decided to pick up a few coloured clothes to try.I ended up buying this cardi (brighter in real life, kinda like this colourwww.clothingattesco.com/knitwear/f+f-basics-stretch-cardigan/invt/bm321079&bklist=icat,4,shop,catgwomens,womens-knitwear I was stunned when I tried it on,I thought it would make me look corpse like but actually it really didn't! It seems to bring my light freckles out an gives my skin a little glow,I could've cried.I skipped out of the changing room with a very bright cardi reduced to £7 :D

I also tried on a knitted skater dress is a petrolly greenish colour and it looked great (should've bought it as can't see one online)

I also held up the navy cardi and purple top I am wearing, right up to my face and they both brought out a slight ruddyness to my cheeks and made my eyes look darker/duller.

I guess that does make me an Autumn then?

Only problem I have now is how to make the cardi look young!I'm 31 and it's not a colour you see many wearing, especially my age.Combined with the style it could be tricky.

So do I wear with it?

And am I right to now start with an autumn wardrobe? Smile

I've ha years of looking corpse like at times and people telling me to get a tan because very pale skin is just 'wrong',apparently,so to see it glowing with colours made my day!

jennimoo · 07/11/2013 13:35

That's a bargain triptrap! I know what you mean. Some of 'our' colours are so unfashionable I wouldn't know how to wear them.

I've uploaded a photo of my current hair colour to my profile (I think) in case that helps anyone advise on the hair dye colour. I'm just wanting to be sure I choose something 'warm' and suitable for a soft autumn.

shopafrolic · 07/11/2013 20:18

just wanted to say thanks to georginaw for the Clinique chubby stick recommendation. I bought the Chilli you suggested, and also a Tomato one. Really good colours. Thanks

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/11/2013 21:42

I need to look at lipsticks.I've always been useless with finding colours that suit me!

For anyone interested mandmdirect (I know,I know!) have some Autumn coloured bits on sale at the mo,mustard shorts, olive tops, olive and red skinnies for £9.99,oxblood cardies and tops, some autumny neutrals and a (coral, peach or shell?) skater skirt for £3.99!

You have to wade through some crap and sportsdom on the site though!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/11/2013 21:51

Oops,the skirt is Salmon

Snowlike · 07/11/2013 22:17

Jenni I feel your pain! many of the colours in our season are a bit frumpy....I struggle because I find classic clothes are too dull and edgy clothing is often black or grey, I often feel like I'm on a colour diet.

On a more positive note, today I had my hair cut, the startling thing was for the first time in years I looked in the mirror while we talked about the cut and thought I looked good - my make-up works, my skin looked good, my eyes looked bright, what a difference!

FizzyFeet · 08/11/2013 18:38

Well I ordered the Baukjen dress (link ^^ upthread) and it's totally different from the website! A very vibrant orange shade - somewhere between HoC orange and geranium, if you've got your swatch book handy. Lovely dress, lovely fit but way too bright for me! Will be returning it. Might stick to my "sure-fire" colours from now on!

CuriosityCola · 08/11/2013 19:04

Trip trap, I can't see the colour of the cardi. When you had your colours done did they give you style advice? I went with colour me beautiful and was given a small shopping list for my shape. I always team cardis with skinny jeans or nice dresses. Still on the hunt for fashionable skirts.

I wasn't sure if my colours were working for me until I looked at some recent snaps. I look more alive and healthy.

charitygirl · 08/11/2013 20:46

How disappointing fizzy - I had a (cheap) very bright orange dress which I thought I liked but I spilled red wine down it which I couldn't remove, and I wasn't bothered...which is a bit telling! I'd have been gutted it if had been my purple, teal, or geranium dresses.

So maybe bright bright orange is a bit too 'spring' for some of us.

The ups and downs of online shopping eh...baukjen usually have nice khakis and bronzes, even if in general they're not very autumn friendly.

charitygirl · 08/11/2013 20:47

Oh, hopefully have you tried on the tartan leggings yet? I've worn them the last three weekends in a row - love!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 08/11/2013 21:35

I haven't actually had my colours done curiosity,I just had a thread on here with pics and seem to fit the bill.Style wise,it'll always be difficult as I'm a proper hourglass lol so things that look ok on others can look either tarty or matronly on me!But I do know what generally suits.

The problem is when colours are those you generally don't see on women under a certain age.Combine it with a long cardi (with a bit of ribbing on the upper back) and you have to be careful not to frump it up!

Was wondering about trying it on with a simple, shorter, skater dress to see how that looks?I rarely go anywhere other than ds school or shopping!or with skinnies and knee highs. But it's getting he colours right with it and my knee boots (that I love) arrived in a reddy brown rather than he tan in the pics.So that makes it a little more awkward too!

catslave · 08/11/2013 21:57

Snowlike - apologies if I have missed this, but I am wondering if your natural colouring is like mine? I am pale with very dark brown eyes and dark brown hair that has a hint of gold/red (dad and daughter are redheads) plus freckles. I have a tan dress my husband bought me years ago. It's from JCrew so was massively expensive (so I can't bung it in the bin) but is light brown and just looks like poo on me. I look like I am dying. I too am a vibrant autumn who tended to wear a lot of navy and grey before my colours were done last week.

There aren't many blues and greys in our selection, which destroys about 2/3 of my current wardrobe. Also, I wish Kettlewell would do a scoop neck vest with straps that actually cover a bra strap... or am I alone?
