Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Toys ooh yes, loads! I love the smell of Nivea products, although I have to limit my use so as not to interfere with perfume. Also, ever since I can remember, I've loved the smell of the little sandpaper strip on matchboxes. I could just sniff it all day

Nivea smells nice, and I'd probably use it if I didn't hate moisturising (horrible greasy feeling even if it's a non-greasy product). Only ever moisturise my face if it starts flaking and goes red (happens once or twice during winter) and then I need something hypoallergenic, oil free totally awful smelling or my skin gets worse.. Confused

That strip on the matchbox is quite nice, now that you mention it.. That smell when you snuff out a candle is nice as well

And the smell of plastic dolls and their hair (sort of powdery bubblegummy).

Ooh nearly forgot, I love the smell of naphtalene (used on moth balls) and (foreign) supermarket cleaning product isles - those to me are the smells that remind me of Greece Grin

I adore the smell of Elnett hairspray. I reckon my little bottle of Noa smells very similar.

I wore Tubereuse Criminelle down dogs last night. It was lovely. Kept on getting warm wafts of it.
Today its Shalimar parfum. Really bergamotty today for some reason but as usual has dried down deliciously.

SOTD is ELdO Like This, which is gorgeous. I'm getting quite a lot of immortelle and ginger this time.

Toys, your parcel has arrived. I can't wait to try Portrait of a Lady - it's been on my must-try list for ages.

A day with Encre Noire.
Love the vetiver, less thrilled with the Iso E Super base.

Love both the matchbox strip thing and the snuffed candles. Moth balls are wonderful (but carcinogenic so sniff with care).

My favourite smell when I was a child was that almondy Gripfix glue. Absolute heaven.

Am back from my trip away! Went to Selfridges in London and bought myself a smaller size FB of Coromandel.

Was a bit of a blind buy and at first I have to say I was disappointed. It seemed to me to have a similar furniture polish note to Calvin Klein's Obsession, which I think is naaarsty.

BUT how wrong I was. Coromandel is a million times more complex than that. Any initial sharp furniture polishyness in the top notes very soon settles down into something smooth and almost creamy smelling. It is sweet and comforting and anchored by a real earthy, walk in the woodsyness. A beautiful scent. Perfect to spray on after a hot bath at the end of a hard day when you want to curl up on the sofa with a good dvd and a cup of cocoa.

The Bois des Iles was gorgeous too.

I went to Les Senteurs as well and have fallen in love with Tauers Incense Rose. It is wonderful - the rose is so bright over the smoky incense, and I think this will be my next FB purchase.

Also sampled Tom Fords new Sahara Noir for the umpteenth time. Can't decide if I like it or not. I do love incense, but think perhaps this is a bit linear and 'flat'. If anyone can give me some examples of good niche incenses to try that would be great. I've heard good things about Zagorsk?

Also sampled LUSH Breath of God on the recommendation of Tania Sanchez. It was utterly utterly vile. Made me nauseous. Disgusting. Couldn't scrub it off quick enough.

Spent the entire time away draped in my beloved L'air du desert marocain. It is, without a doubt, my 'one'. I could be wearing a bin bag and I would feel a million dollars in that stuff. It's a compliment getter too - people notice it because it is so unique I think, and because it smells sooo exotic.

Anyway, I now want to get my hands on some Montale samples. Want to try the musks and the ouds. Does anyone know where the best place to order from is? Has anyone tried The Perfumed Court?

Toys I will be posting your parcel first class tomorrow when I go into town on the bus ok? Sorry it's been ages.

Ooh, Fuckit, what a lovely fragrant trip! Yes, I agree with you about Coromandel; it takes a while to get into its stride, but when it does it is heavenly. I have a sample of Sahara Noir, but haven't tried it yet; I'm looking forward to it.

Today I'm trying Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, kindly passed on by Toys. Not a good start, as the intial note I picked up was my nemesis tuberose! It has definitely developed and improved in the five hours since I applied it, with the cool crisp iris finally fighting through the white florals.

Fuckit the entire Comme des Garcons Incense series is worth sampling. Amouage Jubilation 25 and XXV might be worth trying as well. More ideas here. And Messe de Minuit by Etro is a cult classic.

I love Incense Rose too - the perfume has a built in dialogue going on, I love that.

I'd like to have a sample (or FB?) of the new Tauer, an aldehyde rose. Tried it once, really liked it...

SOTD Yatagan.

The best source of Amouage and Montale samples in Europe is Parfümeria Neroli here; 2 GBP per sample.

SOTD: Kenzo Madagascar. Feels quite synthetic now that I'm a bit more refined in my tastes.. I still like it, though.

My favourite incenses are Zagorsk, Jaisalmer and Breath of God (Fuckit, it's a bit of an odd one, but the bubblegummy aspect with the melon really works for me together with the smoky incense).

Thanks for the links Frugal. I didn't think anyone was doing any proper musk perfumes anymore so was excited when I read about the Montale collection.

My mother wore musk when I was a child - Coty's Wild Musk, and Musk by Alyssa Ashley. I still think those perfumes smell beautiful, even though they are cheap. Such fond memories. And of course there's the obligatory White Musk by the Body Shop which I wore a lot during my early teens. I just love the idea of having a really beautiful musk perfume to wear.

Toys maybe Breath of God just smelt horrid on me. Or maybe I don't get it. I really didn't like it at all though Sad Would like to try Zagorsk though I think.

I've been trying out the violets today- thank you Frugal and Toys! My favourite by far is Bois de Violette, love the dark duskiness of it. Eau du Ciel is also lovely. Unicorn Spell is odd but interesting- very green but a bit plasticky also.

Fuckit Breath of God is a weird one- I didn't hate it but this smoked ham note pops up which spoils it for me. Voice of Reason is worth a try as it's also smoky (although more cigarette-like)

I'm having a dilemma at the moment- £15 worth of Amazon vouchers burning a hole in my pocket. I'm thinking of buying a) Handbag size Badgley Mishka b) Lolita Lempicka EDP or c) Perfumer's Workshop Tea Rose. Which one? Or should I wait for more funds...

ToysRLuv · 31/05/2013 20:19

Fuzzy: Lolita Lempicka is very strong and a bit cloying and medicinal. I like it, but it gives me a headache. It's in a similar vein as Angel and Flowerbomb, if you like those (or not!)..

Fuckit: Zagorsk is totally different to Breath of God. Incense with pine needles and wood.

Ooh Toys, I love cloying and medicinal (also love Angel and have a soft spot for Flowerbomb.) Loud perfumes are my thing! Lolita now at the No.1 spot Grin

I was in Lush the other day and there was no Breath of God to be had at all. I did try Voice of Reason, though, which I rather liked. I also thought Furze was very wearable.

Incense-lovers may like Bois d'Ascese which is a gorgeous woody dry incense scent, quite spicy but sort of cool.

You know what Furze is in German, right?

I dislike all of the new perfume oils in Lush. Apart from maybe Sikkim Girls. Hadn't tried Furze, though, just because of the name.. (petty I know)

I have Sun from Lush, but it a pretty innocuous orange-citrus. Some of their range is a bit challenging!

Iris Nobile is still going strong; the drydown is lovely.

HarumScarum · 31/05/2013 23:15

No, what is Furze in German?

I liked Sun, Cointreau, but thought it probably wouldn't last long.

ToysRLuv · 31/05/2013 23:20

Farts. They sell it in Germany with that name, as well (a bit of a hard sell, probably).

I wouldn't think so either. Confused Grin

I looked it up and the notes appear to be coconut, vanilla, neroli and flowers. Fairy farts? I think I will have to try it next time I'm near a Lush..
