Today will be Day 4 for me. So far, so good, although I spent yesterday crying every time I tried to sit down.

Hello - may I join in please?

I did my first shred session last night and found it not to be too tough. Wee bit achey today but not too horrific.

But oh how I wish I had a large studio to do it in with a big screen and not my kitchen with it playing on the laptop! I'm also hoping that doing it at 4pm means my downstairs neighbors are still at work Grin

Will do session two later this afternoon and quite looking forward to it...

A friend of mine who weighs (rough estimate) 9 1/2 stone did L1 with 1.5kg weights wearing a heart rate monitor and it says she burned 134 calories. The heavier you are, the faster you go or the more weight you lift- the higher the burn.

Oh thanks you've inspired me to give it another go. I did Level 1 about 8 times over a couple of weeks, and you do definitely notice a difference in your fitness level after a few days. I love that's it's (supposedly) only 20 minutes, it seems doable somehow. Maybe this time I'll get to level 2!

134 calories is that all!
I'm after eating twice that in Crunchie bar just writing this post

If you counted the calories burnt you'd never do any exercise. I used a rowing machine years ago with calorie counts, it took ages to get up to 100. Very depressing. But it has a good effect on your muscles, your body shape, your lung capacity, your energy levels and all sorts of other things.

I don't think weight loss from exercise is a simple matter of calorie burn, or it would be much easier just not to eat that crunchie!

I struggle at times with low mood and exercise helps me keep on top of it.
I suppose I was reasonably fit to start with as I run. But this DVD is definitely increasing my upper body strength. Not sure I'm personally seeing much weight loss but feel more toned.

Ok, have just ordered it. Have 5 weeks till I go on holiday!

Being more toned in itself will help you loose weight. muscle burns more calories than fat so simply by having more toned muscle you will burn more calories in a day. Plus weight loss is basically a simple calculation of calories in Vs calories out. If you are eating more than you are burning each day (not just through exercise) you simply won't loose weight.

AllPast, depends - I use myfitnesspal app and the calorie counter certainly forces me to do even more exercise. Like when I really want a beer, but am out of calories, then I'll just go out for a run and earn the beer.

it's true though that people under-estimate the calories eaten and over-estimate the ones burned by exercising. Therefore weight loss is 80-90% down to eating (or not) and exercise only supports. You have to do insane amounts to lose by exercise only without changing the eating habits. It has other benefits though, as already mentioned.

OK, this thread has inspired me to dust it off and get exercising again Smile. Actually, when I've done it before (generally about 3x per week) I find that I eat less - it's like my core muscles tighten up and I feel full quicker. I've never noticed this with any other exercise I've done.

MistyRocks · 06/07/2012 20:13

i honestly think i feel and i look more toned and i have only done it 3 x (over 3 days)

and yeah also allpastyears i seem to have had less of an appetite since starting too, but maybe thats cos i don't want to undo my good work :o

My dvd arrived this morning so have done the Shred (level one) for first time ever. And survived. Grin I really couldn't do the press-ups though and was very sweaty after all those star jumps, skipping etc - I am soooooo unfit! Hopefully will stick with it - I liked Jillian more than I'd expected to, found her very motivating. ANyway, thanks for this thread - you lot are the reason I ordered the dvd and my new set of bright pink weights!

I've been inspired to Shred and did day 1 last night. It was hard work and I had to stop for 5 seconds a few times, especially in the abs bit at the end with the scissor kicks. I felt it about 30 mins later and was dreading waking up this morning, but I don't feel too bad.

DH says it's because I didn't push myself enough. I think I just have a natural fitness. Grin

Either way, I'm looking forward to doing it again tonight but am stopping off at the sports shop on the way home to get some proper weights. I don't think the cans were heavy enough.

I have also ordered the DVD from Amazon waiting for it to arrive!
I have never done it before, so can someone tell me: do I need equipment - i see mention of weighs and skipping - do I need to buy a skipping rope?!

Report
chicaguapa · 09/07/2012 13:25

It's a pretend skipping rope. Smile

You just need hand weights, though some people have been using cans and water bottles. I think you can start with those, but by level 3 I'm expecting to have to need something heavier.

And a mat to lie on when doing the abs work.

Report
notyummy · 09/07/2012 13:27

No skipping rope. You will need weights - some people start with tins of beans etc but that really isn't enough. In an ideal world, more than one set of weights allows you to vary the weights as inevitably some exercises feel more challenging than others. Most people seem to start with 1/1/5/2kg depending on fitness, and work up from there.

Report
weasar · 09/07/2012 13:27

Ooh a pretend skipping rope? Yes I have one of those already! Grin
Hmm...
...ok, I should be fine then.

Thanks chicaguapa!

Right...drastic measures need to be taken - have holiday and a wedding in 5 weeks...am a 12-14, and back on weight watchers from today...already have shred, but never stuck to it - realistically how much weight do you this I can lose whilst sticking religiously to both (although will not be shredding on a Sunday?)...please give me hope that I've not left it too late to be a comfortable 10-12?!

Report
notyummy · 09/07/2012 14:00

A dress size in 5 weeks is doable. But you do have to be committed. Tins of beans probably wont get those results tbh.

Report
worldgonecrazy · 09/07/2012 14:41

A dress size is very doable in 5 weeks if you push yourself to work hard and do it 6 times a week.

You might not lose much weight, I know I haven't, but I have lost inches and inches and inches......

I've been doing the Shred for the past few weeks - it's tough but very satisfying, especially when you master moves you couldn't do at all a few weeks earlier.

My aims are to become fitter and to lose the remains of my post-baby jelly belly!

It's also doing wonders for my sex life - an added bonus!

Am going to do my first shred later today. Quick question on location please -

Living room - smaller space, carpeted, or

Dining room - big space, wood floor plus rug?

I've got a yoga mat - needed or not needed?

Heinz beans tins will have to suffice as weights :)

Report
UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 09/07/2012 19:07

Right, first shred done.

Bean tins weren't enough, will have to get some weights.

L1 wasn't too bad except for the push ups and the last abs work out.
