Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 16/03/2012 11:04

The pieces she chooses are high end and quite fashion-y but they don't suit her shape or look at all. She is like a boden head and feet with a stella mccartney in the middle!

Honky · 16/03/2012 12:47

Totally agree, Noddy. She lacks the poise and confidence.

BobblyGussets · 16/03/2012 13:24

If anyone lacks poise it is David Cameron. He could make a Versace suit like a pair of Primark pyjamas.

I can tell he is a dumpy little man under that suit, so Sam Cam is much more presentable than him and his ruddy red plastic face features.

Chubfuddler · 16/03/2012 13:32

He has definitely put on weight since he got the top job.

Lottapianos · 16/03/2012 13:40

The one and only thing that I like about David Cameron is that he seems to be genuinely crackers about his wife. He looks at her constantly when they're together and I don't think it's just for show. He has a 'can't believe my luck' look on his face when they're together - they've been together a long time and I think it's quite sweet. All the rest of the time he makes me hurl buckets.

I agree she looks terribly awkward and ill at ease. I quite like the blue state dinner dress although I'm a sucker for a floral print. At least it was something different, not a boring black dress. Bless her, she has many crosses to bear. Fancy waking up next to Dave and his big shiny pink face every morning

GeorginaWorsley · 16/03/2012 18:32

Dave actually quite tall,6FT at least.
He does worship her.Wink

mathanxiety · 16/03/2012 21:10

True, and as a couple and a family, politics aside, much to admire there.

Chubfuddler · 16/03/2012 21:12

He is tall. So, surprisingly, is William Hague.

I liked the blue dress. I just think she should have had her hair up.

BestIsWest · 17/03/2012 00:22

Yes Chub I think you have got it. On the whole there's nothing wrong with the clothes SC wore, it's just that they were too big and her hair wasn't 'done'. (I secretly admire her for this). The blue lace dress doesn't photograph well because of the pattern and her hair gets in the way of the neckline - if she'd had her hair up and showed off her neck it would have been a different story. I don't like the narrow belts though. Generally I love MO but what was that hideous necklace.

The5thFishy · 17/03/2012 08:27

I don't know why you are all surprised SamCam has awful taste, she did choose to be married to Call Me Dave, after all.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/03/2012 10:27

She looks lovely in the dress with the green sleeves, and in the VB one.

And the more I see that trench and trousers she wore off the plane the more I like it.

gimmeabreak · 17/03/2012 11:47

See I don't see the worship at ALL

His 'calm down woman' attitude surely pervades chez Cameron ... He's a Bullingdon boy and her a poly graduate. Methinks its all part of an image ....

Chubfuddler · 17/03/2012 11:52

She's posher than him actually.

ameliagrey · 17/03/2012 13:00

oh just leave her alone. She'a mum to 3 kids, has suffered a bereavement, has to look good when she is out, and it must be awful having everyone pick over what you wear.

I agree her dress sense is not spot on but did anyone give a flying fuck what Dennis Thatcher wore? No.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 17/03/2012 13:05

Yes she is definitely posher than he is. He married up certainly.

Am I the only person who likes that blue dress? It is a bit Penelope Keith in the Good Life but in a good way.

She just needs to bloody stand up straight. But in general I like what she wears. But perhaps I am a dowdy bugger as well. Grin

Mummyinthedark · 17/03/2012 15:25

A [male] friend of my DH's tweeted re the US wardrobe: "WTF styled Sam Cam? Kim Jong Il?" We both cracked up.

gimmeabreak · 17/03/2012 20:34

I know she's posh but that doesn't make her bright ...

Chubfuddler · 17/03/2012 21:06

Going to a poly doesn't make you thick. Back when she was in tertiary education red bricks were for academic subjects and polys were for vocational ones and arty ones. She studied fine art. Nothing wrong with that.

gimmeabreak · 17/03/2012 21:21

Huge generalisation re polys etc in the 80's no?

Chubfuddler · 17/03/2012 21:52

I'm generalising? You think she's thick because she went to a poly but I'm generalising?

Okaaaay....

gimmeabreak · 19/03/2012 13:35

No I am saying the Cameron's will be of differing academic calibre

Her wealthy background cannot counter this

florenceuk · 19/03/2012 14:59

Interestingly Lisa Armstrong (whom I like as a fashion columnist but I am over 40!) rates her dress sense: here and says demure is in!

mathanxiety · 19/03/2012 19:25

...'showcasing the best of British creativity' doesn't mean you should see yourself as a shop window mannequin and have tunnel vision about presenting certain clothes or designers.

You have to dress you, and when you are the PM's wife and will have photos taken as the PM's wife you need to understand how you will look in photos -- so you will need to wear clothes that look good in photos, not just look good with your eyes in front of the mirror, or are the hottest thing from such and such an up and coming young designer. Additionally, while the dress may be demure and demure may be in, if your hair looks 'not done' and your posture shouts 'get me out of here' basically all anyone sees is the dress and the attitude in the photos, you are dressing yourself as if you are a dressmaker's dummy and you are not exactly presenting the dress very positively either.

You have to look appropriately dressed for the occasions you attend too, and those black high heels with the black pants and pink belted T-shirt style top were not appropriate for a trip to a big gym for a sports event. Mrs Obama wore low kitten heels hidden by her long trousers and a fancy cardigan there -- sleeves pushed up or 3/4 length look a lot more informal than sleeves that you can't do anything with; loose pants look a lot more sporty and less tailored. She still looks like the First Lady; Sam Cam otoh looks like the PA called unexpectedly from the office to the gym.

thomasbodley · 19/03/2012 20:20

I'd put serious money on Emily Sheffield (Sam Cam's sister and deputy editor at Vogue) doing both her styling and Kate Middleton's - she and Sam Cam both wear almost identical designers and an almost identical high-end/low-end label mix.

They both look a mess. Fashionistas do NOT know how to dress people in business - and both of these women are (whether they like it or not) taking on a corporate public relations role, not representing British fashion.

Both of them need serious media training. Their body language and personal presentation is dreadful, and Kate Middleton's Sloaney pronunciation is soon going to start setting people's teeth on edge.

justasecond · 19/03/2012 21:09

Being a fellow sloucher I feel sorry for samcam. It is hard to break the habit of slouching when you are tall and being slim as she is makes it look worse. I am not as tall as her but have been this height (5ft 7) since the age of about 12 and therefore had to stoop to the level of other children my age. I have a bad back and my osteo keeps telling me its all down to my posture but I just can't seem to stand bloody straight all the time!
I like her dress sense anyway. I like how she is modest and does not have it all on show. I agree about the hair though, it needs something doing to it, not sure what though.
