Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

teejwood · 15/03/2012 08:40

ohhh yes, monkeysmama, but you know he's unaccompanied in those shots - if he needed a plus one I would have been happy to step in Wink
need to stop drooling and get back to work, though

Pagwatch · 15/03/2012 08:42

It does bug me that she goes to a designer like Roksanda Illincic and comes away with that odd colour block dress instead of the gorgeous stuff. And the dinner dress is an utterly gorgeous fabric but it doesn't work as a high neck. The Erdem high neck gowns are similar but much more flattering.

She is using good designers, hitting great trends but it isn't working. She just looks to me like a woman who doesn't want the attention.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 15/03/2012 08:43

SC, to me, looks like an (albeit thin) hourglass shape - shoulders and hips in proportion, long legs with shapely ankles.
So a dress with a high neck looks uncomfortable on her, and an a-line skirt does nothing for her bottom half. < gavel >
And yes, the hair is unfortunate for a state occasion.
I don't judge her for any of this - we all make mistakes - but I do wonder why she doesn't take any of the advice that must be available to her.
Surely a quiet word from someone in the know wouldn't open her/them up to accusations of dodgy dealings?

AIBUqatada · 15/03/2012 08:47

DavCam was the one whose dress sense gave me the creeps on arrival chez Obama. His casual style is even more nauseating than Blair's. He looked like he was trying out the comprehensive school uniform that his Etonian days never gave him the chance to wear. Not sure the schoolboy look plays well as an adjunct to lapdoggery.

Honky · 15/03/2012 08:49

Just posted on the other SamCam thread. She lacks any sort of sense of style or charisma and is always stooped and apologetic-looking, so even though she's got a great figure and that dress is lovely (and much more interesting than Michelle Obama's), she can't carry it off. Hair all wrong, always just sort of hangs there, and should have been up with this neckline.

That dress needs to be worn with confidence! She looks like she's someone's slightly nervous secretary.

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 08:50

That Burberry mac was made for someone 10 years younger, 6 inches taller and 2 sizes smaller! Looked like a sack on her.

Agree, she needs to stay away from the 'labels ofr the sake of it' and get with the Michelle Obama philosophy of 'wear what looks good'. MO wears J Crew and Banana republic and still looks better, FFS!

notyummy · 15/03/2012 08:54

Agree her posture could be better. That is where MO definitely wins. And MO looked amazing in that Zac Posen dress with the brooch in the shots of them earlier in the day.

Swed · 15/03/2012 08:57

It's politics, not the Oscars.

Xiaoxiong · 15/03/2012 08:58

teej yes she is very tall - she's 5'11" and the tallest first lady ever IIRC.

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 09:00

If it was Hilary Clinton, I wouldnt bother commenting on her frock...

Bonsoir · 15/03/2012 09:02

Swed - this is Style & Beauty, not In The News Grin

Merrylegs · 15/03/2012 09:02

Oh yes, poor Sam, that banquet dress did nothing for her.

I think Michelle is fab, but she looked v slouchy in her dress. I want to tell her to stand up straight. She is doing that slight hip drop, knee bend us tall folk adopt when surrounded by small people. I suspect the off the shoulder sleeves are adding to the sloped look, actually. In fact, they should have swapped dresses.

And normally I'm a big Swooney Clooney fan, but I think he could have shaved.

And Anna Wintour? Yes, actually, you CAN be too thin.

Blimey, this is all v cathartic.

Next!

Swed · 15/03/2012 09:10

Bonsoir - Oh OK then.

Agree the colour block dress was horrible and WRONG for her. But the long dress she wore to the dinner was beautiful and was briiliant in shape and colouring on her. Her hair needs to be either a bit longer (and some dark caramel highlights please), or a tad shorter: and please get rid of that fifth-former's fringe.

BettyBathroom · 15/03/2012 09:11

Sam Cam often seems to wear the stuff that looks like it came from the bargain designer rail in Harrods.

I thought the pink top looked fine when I thought it was a dress - but a few pics down it was revealed as a top with navy trousers..it was just dull - almost M&S older range.

SamCam needs to get a good stylist, she wears high end fashion, so she obviously cares - so how does she end up looking as poorly put together?

MO looks radiant, she wears clothes that really work for her.

Swed · 15/03/2012 09:13

MO's fashion is far too scary for me. And her shoes are always hideous.

noddyholder · 15/03/2012 09:15

It's her feet they are too long. Maybe she can get them shortened which she is over there

Eliza22 · 15/03/2012 09:16

To me, the woman looks like she's stuck in a time wrap. That school sixth former hairdo (circa 1978), the bland makeup, sensible (Startright looking) pumps all the time. She's NOT a fashionista, and I know she's only "going with" in the sense that it's expected of her, to support Dave, but the woman sometimes looks like she's nipping out to Tesco to do a bit of shopping rather than first lady to our PM. There's no style, no polish.

I do wish someone, somewhere would DO SOMETHING with her hair.

I sack the stylist and take further advice, if I were her.

OneHandFlapping · 15/03/2012 09:16

SC would look better if she stood up straight. She always looks as if she is trying to shrink into the background with those stooped shoulders. If she squared her shoulders and lifted her chin, she would wear the clothes, rather than the clothes wearing her.

Bonsoir · 15/03/2012 09:17

I think Michelle Obama generally looks amazing and she doesn't have an easy figure at all. I really loved her look at last night's dinner - so strong, so feminine, so glamorous.

She always wears false eyelashes in the evening - such an easy glamour hit.

notyummy · 15/03/2012 09:17

Ah, you see I like some of what MO wears (not all though - don't think she carries little cardies off well at all - looks like she has borrowed them from her smaller, younger sister.) Not paid much attention to her shoes tbh. I think she does good ball gown dressing.

Bonsoir · 15/03/2012 09:21

Oh I like MO's tight, colourful cardigans a lot. They make her look so much more approachable than a jacket would, while fulfilling a similar purpose. MO purposefully avoids dressing like a business woman, which most "first ladies" try to do, and she carries it off precisely because she is a business woman and has the natural gravitas that a long and serious career impart.

happybubblebrain · 15/03/2012 09:25

I don't care what she wears, I never notice it.
Her choice in men shows she has absolutely no taste.

Swed · 15/03/2012 09:25

Never mind biscuits and choosing government, we need Mumsnet to style Sam Cam for her next big occasion.

Bonsoir · 15/03/2012 09:27

Absolutely, I hope that SamCam reads our threads about her and understands that they are benevolent. We wish her well and would like her to wow the world with her style Smile

Lizzylou · 15/03/2012 09:29

Agree that Samcam looks uncomfortable, like a little girl in her Mom's clothes, where as MO is comfortable in her own skin and glowing and confident.

Anyway, Damien Lewis and Idris Elba!!! What a party!
