Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/03/2012 20:39

Thanks Katie - that dress is beyond hideous.

JasperJohns · 15/03/2012 20:40

Dave looks like his Madame Tussauds waxwork in KatieScarlett's pic.

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/03/2012 20:42

Agree with Lizzy re. Happy's post.

Samcam is a pretty lady with a fab figure - god, I make enough mistakes with clothes - thank the lord I don't have the world's press critiquing me.

teejwood · 15/03/2012 20:43

families i said it further down the thread; with MO and samcam, they are not being clotheshorses for their husbands. they are both using their position to promote their country's designers on the international stage - eg samcam with her burberry, MO with her zac posen, samcam with her M&S, MO with her jcrew etc - and i actually think that is a good and positive thing.

men are also judged on their appearances, don't forget, it's just a different type of commentary because it's more likely to be about physique or charisma than the label they are wearing. although i loved the quote from will smith that if he wants a sexy suit he goes to ozwald boateng Grin

Chubfuddler · 15/03/2012 20:46

Fwiw I'd imagine samcam is less overwhelmed than bored at these things. She looks like she'd rather be getting pissed somewhere fun. She should do something better with her hair i agree. Perhaps she doesn't like her ears?

applecrumbleandcream · 15/03/2012 20:47

Whoever advised her to wear that blue dress needs sacking, it's absolutely awful. Definitely looks like she should be at a childrens party circa 1975!

Lizzylou · 15/03/2012 20:51

Chub, I agree.

I think commenting on what Samcam/MichelleO wears for public engagements is fine, they have to be expected to step up to the mark. Commenting on what nature gave them is just not nice.
I am sure we are not all sat there looking like Cindy Crawford pre-surgery, are we?

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/03/2012 20:56

Looks down at pyjamas and distinctly un-cindy like body

henrysmama2012 · 15/03/2012 21:03

I think that SamCam looks bad in what she wears (she is pretty, though) - standing next to MO doesn't help as I think she has a natural dynamism and glamour factor that SamCam doesnt have.

Btw I dont agree that no-one notices what the guys wear - scameron and Obama have very well tailored suits and always dress extremely well, & that is a part of both of their images - it is just easier for guys I suppose to choose what to wear (good suit = job done).

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/03/2012 21:03

I used to have her work-out video - would often watch it with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

happybubblebrain · 15/03/2012 22:24

Nay nay Lizzywho. Not bitchy, just a joke.
We all need a sense of humour in these times of nasty politics.

FamiliesShareGerms · 15/03/2012 22:38

Agree with Lizzie, happy bubble, even if not meant bitchily that's how it came across (to me)

HellonHeels · 15/03/2012 22:46

SamCam has a workout video?

Chubfuddler · 15/03/2012 23:01

No! Cindy!

happybubblebrain · 15/03/2012 23:05

Bring back Spitting Image. They'd have a field day.

mathanxiety · 16/03/2012 05:03

See here's how she looks with her hair up off her face, albeit inadvertently. Even though she has a short forehead, her face looks much better when you can actually see it and she's not going around with the curtains drawn, as it were.

I thought the pink top, belt and black pants looked far too 80s, and she couldn't walk in the heels she was wearing.

Her shoulders seem wedged permanently around her ears and she poses for photos with her hands behind her back a lot, in contrast with MO. I also notice a wide-legged, pigeon toed stance when she is posing -- it bespeaks awkwardness.

The turquoise top with the dark skirt was wrong on so many levels. Looked like a casual pastel T paired with a formal piece.

In general, I think her clothes wore her. I think she makes the mistake of going for a 'look' and not wearing something that suits her.

saffronwblue · 16/03/2012 05:28

She does look a bit - not dowdy exactly, but backgroundish. It is hard to know what the role of the wife of the PM or Pres is other than to look presentable and supportive at all times and I think both women carry this off quite well.
Here in Australia with a female Prime Minister we can discuss her clothes and her policies together! And her partner is just a guy in a suit- although very handily is a hairdresser. Many people got the giggles when he said he had mastered the art of a 4.30 am blow dry without really waking up.

KandyBarr · 16/03/2012 07:49

I'm obsessed with the Victoria Beckham dress she's wearing in the third pic in this gallery.

And I'm struggling with the fact that I'm admiring the style of a Tory wife. Sheesh.

BettyBathroom · 16/03/2012 08:05

The VB dress is the nicest thing I have seen her in, she looks fab in that pic. It's fine being fashion forward but everything else about your look has to match the cutting edge look too and that's what wrong - she just can't carry it off, she doesn't have that kind of look, hence the clothes and her never seem to connect.

laptopwieldingharpy · 16/03/2012 08:39

she daringly wore all the right pieces for the season.
bravo! It takes personality to it pull off

Salteena · 16/03/2012 09:23

Thank goodness there's a thread saying exactly what I've always thought! She looks terrible in most things, as far as i can see. What's with the weird predilection for round-necked tops and things that are belted or tucked in at the waist? Even models would find this a hard look to pull off, and they look hideous on her, I'm sorry to say.

I get that she's showcasing British fashion but as others have said, she seems very wooden and ill at ease in these designer outfits Hmm

Bonsoir · 16/03/2012 09:26

The only excuse for a round neck is as a background for major accessories - a big necklace or scarf.

KandyBarr · 16/03/2012 09:34

Betty - agree it's touch and go on the carrying off. But frankly I'm just pleased to see she's not landing at the airport wearing a matronly wrap dress, or attending the state dinner wearing a bootcut-jeans-and-a spangly-top combo so beloved by British women.

Though arguably that might be a more honest way to 'showcase British fashion'

BettyBathroom · 16/03/2012 09:48

Kandybarr Grin but fashion can suit most people, you just have to modify the look to suit yourself, rather than pulling a look directly from the catwalk. I think her look says fashion victim rather than fashion queen, imo she's not doing British Designers any favours by wearing their clothes badly!
