Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

MO looks great in the white dress, sparkly broach and big smile. Really good and comfortable, happy to be there.

I feel for Sam Cam, she looks slightly uncomfortable.

notyummy · 15/03/2012 11:54

Essene - are you a character escaped from a 1970s sitcom by any chance...? Hmm Or a DM copywriter?

Essene · 15/03/2012 11:55

No on both counts, why do you ask?

I was only expressing an opinion like everyone else here, but I have no idea what you are insinuating.

LadyPeterWimsey · 15/03/2012 11:56

My friend is at the State Dinner. But not wearing a dress.

notyummy · 15/03/2012 12:02

Just a bit startled at the combination of ladies being told to stand with their legs together and cover up their shoulders, and gay couples not being able to hold hands. The pics that I saw of the event had Helen McCrory draped all over Damien Lewis, with a gay walking couple walking pas the cameras (i.e not stopping) whilst holding hands. In what universe is that making a statement when compared to ther couples?

notyummy · 15/03/2012 12:07

Apologies for all the typos in my last missive. Blush

ivykaty44 · 15/03/2012 12:10

MO can do 25 full on press ups - did you know that?

notyummy · 15/03/2012 12:15

Indeed. Amongst many other accomplishments. Makes me feel like a bit of an underachiever. (I can probably match her on press-ups actually, but seemed to have missed the high flying law career and marrying the leader of the free world...)

Ah well.

Essene · 15/03/2012 12:26

It wasn't me who said MO should cover her shoulders. I just think she should put them back and stand up straight - surely that enhances anyone's appearance? And I do think she stands with her legs too far apart, but don't get me wrong, I am far from ladylike myself. Thankfully though, I am not on public display!

Re the gay men holding hands - I have re=thought through that comment and realise it sounds a bit homophobic. I didn't mean it to. I just find adult couples holding hands a bit sickly, unless they are young lovers, elderly couples on seafronts, or supporting each other in times of great distress. Just put me down as a repressed Englishwoman.

Essene · 15/03/2012 12:27

Oh and who wouldn't drape themselves all over Damian Lewis, given the chance?!

notyummy · 15/03/2012 12:29

Oh yes, I'm with you on the Damian front Wink. Apologies for mis-reading the shoulders line btw.

notyummy · 15/03/2012 12:30

MO has good shoulders. They are an asset and balance out her figure.

butilikesalt · 15/03/2012 12:51

I think if you stand most mortals next to MO, they're going to come out the worse. She has a wattage that tends to make almost anyone standing next to her dull in comparison.

And SamCam... I'm impressed that she managed to shower and dress for the occasion, it's more than I'd be able to do in her position. Yes, she ought to stand up straight, do something with the hair and wear clothes that suit. It's painful to see someone clearly trying and failing.

She could stop trying. She could resolve to lead a private life and never, ever show up to these events. She probably should.

snapsnap · 15/03/2012 13:18

I think SamCams posture and hair let her down and its obvious she isnt comfortable in these situations, she always looks a bit detatched to me.

Michelle Obamas evening wear, white dress and jacket were great but dear lord the wide white trousers and lime cardi combo - horrific.

The blue and white cocktail dress she wore for the salute on the lawn was nice as was the hot pink top and cropped trousers.

However the Victoria Beckam dress, the awful blue dress and the mac were dreadful.

It is strange that, given her previously high powered career, she doesnt have more confidence.

chipstick10 · 15/03/2012 13:35

At least she looks less awkward than Sarah bown who always made me cringe. Sams hair is awful, just awful. It needs lightening for a start. She just always looks so insipid. I like the way David dresses and both look like Posh and becks compared to the dreadful undignified hidious blairs

KandyBarr · 15/03/2012 13:37

I really, really like her style. It's very London and 'fashion forward', as others have said here, but that's appropriate for her role as a UK fashion week ambassador or whatever it is. She'd look odd if she were competing with Michelle Obama's ultra-glossy, bouffant American look - it's a different look, and a welcome change.

belgo · 15/03/2012 13:39

KandyBarr I agree with you. Samantha Cameron has her own, distinct style that is elegant and modest.

Michelle Obama also has her own style, a lot more glamorous and extravagant, and sometimes gets it completely wrong eg. those pale trousers with the mustard cardigan were very unflattering.

chipstick10 · 15/03/2012 13:45

Am i the only one that cant warm to Michelle Obama? Confused

noddyholder · 15/03/2012 13:46

No chipstick I can't nor her dh

chipstick10 · 15/03/2012 13:53

Im glad its not just me noddy i dont like him much either.

VerityBrulee · 15/03/2012 13:54

I agree Kandy she is very fashion forward but I just don't think the clothes she chooses are right for her. This Erdem is fabulous, and would have suited her better. I do feel sorry for her though, she seems quite shy and the company she is forced to keep, and all the publicity, must be overwhelming at times.

Heyyyho · 15/03/2012 13:57

MO does not have lovely shoulders - they are not a good feature for her at all! Sloping and broad and muscular. No "standing up straight" will fix that.

Sorry she may be a wonderful person but why do people big-her up so much on her sense of style? Confused

She is perfectly presentable and very intelligent but but certainly no great beauty nor fashionista.

Bonsoir · 15/03/2012 14:00

I could see Sam Cam in this - not too far from what she usually wears (and presumably feels comfortable in), but a lot more glamorous.

BearlyThere · 15/03/2012 14:47

Gosh yes. That's perfect

bunionscomingsoon · 15/03/2012 15:41

I think MO dresses in quite an old fashioned way curves or not - and SC was right up to the minute with High Street fashion and colour.! The fact she looks nervous is not her fault she must very scared about the whole thing.!
