Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

I think part of the problem is she goes for quite a "high fashion" look but can't really pull it off. Agree that dress was shocking. She looks very uncomfortable being in the public eye.

There is something that jars between Sam Cam's persona and the fashion she chooses. Michelle Obama looks at ease in the clothes she wears - they suit who she is - but Sam Cam looks uncomfortable.

I don't think that the high necklines she chooses flatter her at all, and she needs to stop wearing low-heeled pumps. As for her horrible hair style...

Dunno why anyone is surprised. Have yet to see SamCam not looking like a frump.

Careful though OP- for some inexplicable reason among MNers SC is an untouchable.

I don't actually care what the woman wears.My beef is more that she (and all the others) have to be involved at all. I don't drag Handsome Swain to school with me.

Agree bonsoir she looks as if she would be happier in jeans. It's interesting as her job with Smythson will bring her into the fashion world, but she let's the clothes wear her rather than looking comfortable and stylish.

I've only seen a few outfits but the getting off the plane coat was just weird as if she was trying to cover a different outfit, the block colour top and trousers was just wrong for her and the occasion, and the banquet dress was really terrible - the sleeves and high neck were just wrong.

is she trying to do the very posh english thing of being totally underdressed for everything. The dress she wore for the state banquet was similar in tone to the one she wore for the royal wedding - just something you'd wear to a summer garden party not a state occassion.

Just googled. Can't find the mac pic but don't think that blue dress looks too bad. I saw a pic where it really brought out her eyes. Also she looked smart next to michelle in the pink black combo at the basketball.

But does this mean that I have no sense of style and should back off the thread

She's got no sense of occasion and she can't accessorise. If she'd worn her hair up that dress might have looked ok (it doesn't suit her but the sleeves are pretty), it's a formal banquet ffs don't just turn up with mum hair!

Another baffled at the comment about Michelle being "twice" Sam's size - they both have lovely figures but Sam really is on the willowy side, mind you looking at Dave across the table would put me right off my chips an' all.

I love the fact that Michelle O embraces her curves - and looks more powerful for doing so, not less.
Agree SamCam never seems at ease, whether that is in front of the cameras or because of what she's wearing.
Can I just interject, though, that Helen McCrory looked stunning

I don't actually think Michelle Obama's clothes are stylish either. What Michelle O does though, is radiate confidence and joie-de-vivre. She is totally at ease with who and what she is. And that makes her incredibly sexy.

Something SC with all the tats in the world, will never be.

MO looked lovely I thought in her blue dress. There is something slightly gloomy always about Sam Cam's look. It's not just the too-deep fringe and the too-long hair. She has obviously a great figure but she just looks doleful. Michelle Obama has a real dazzler of a smile and glows with life and it makes a huge difference.

I agree re the high necklines, they don't work on her, ever.

I don't get the "embraces her curves" (Daily Mail euphemism) and "twice her size" stuff though - Michelle Obama has a fantastic figure, is really fit, and can do about 100 press ups at the drop of a hat.

I think both Michelle Obama and Sam Cameron look good. They are very different in terms of style, and I think MO does big stand out style generally better than SC, however I think SC looks good the majority of the time.

And OP, just because MO is bigger than SC, does not mean that it is surprising she looks better! I am not actually one of these people who leaps about shrieking 'a size 22 real woman is MUCH better than one of those size 8 sticks', as frankly, a woman at a healthy weight is generally going to look better than someone who isn't. Having said that, MO is a tall lady who is probably around a size 12 and is obviously a healthy weight and fit. It should come as no surprise that she carries off clothes just as well as someone a couple of sizes smaller - who is probably equally a healthy weight, but a different build.

greta no euphemism, here - MO is fit and has quite an athletic build, but she also has curves and she does dress in way that flatters them, often emphasising them, rather than trying to hide them.

samcam on the other hand seems to dress to try and minimise the thought she might have a womanly shape hiding under those straight lines (current belt fetish to give the impression of a waist notwithstanding)
when the current vogue is for women to be stick insects or lollipop girls, i admire the fact MO has and has pride in her womanly figure, no criticism there.

AlanMoore - I am a huge fan of Sofia Coppola, but I don't think her style is appropriate for the job of wife-of-the-PM. SamCam needs to glam up.

nan is she quite tall? she has that slight stoop people sometimes get when they have been taller than their classmates at school and so they have stooped a bit to try and fit in iykwim
