Samantha Cameron - words fail me

Why has she dressed so badly for this US trip? From the old mac she wrapped round her at the airport to the utterly hideous curtain she appears to be wearing at the state banquet tonight. I am embarrassed for her. Michelle Obama may be twice her size but she is ten-times better dressed.

OP posts:
GretaGarble · 15/03/2012 10:20

I agree and actually I regret posting earlier that she always looks gloomy, because she must still be grieving, what a short length of time three years is, really. And who knows, maybe she does loathe having to leave her other children (the youngest is pretty tiny still) and trot about after her pink-faced PM.

Look at someone like Mme Sarko, faultlessly elegant, but there is something slightly chilling about her. Give me SamCam any day.

JaneB1rkin · 15/03/2012 10:26

Goodness Blush think you have the wrong poster! thankyou.

Is Michelle O hefty? Doesn't look it to me.

BobblyGussets · 15/03/2012 10:28

If Michelle O is hefty, I am obese (wobbly size 14 Sad )

JaneB1rkin · 15/03/2012 10:29

I think for Sam it's the situation she is in that is so tiresome. I don't know why it is important that the wives of the PMs dress up to go on show. I think it's pointless, myself, and unfair and a hard place to be - purely for decoration, you cannot even speak much, so all people see is your expression and your clothes.

I'd like to think if I had a public type of job I'd be good enough at it that my cellulite and bad taste wouldn't matter and I'd be seen with respect and fondness, based on what I thought and felt and DID but this poor lass does nothing that anyone knows, or cares about. I might go hell for leather FUGLY in protest if I was forced to be decorative for the sake of it.

JasperJohns · 15/03/2012 10:32

I meant Michelle is a big woman, she's tall and broad. I didn't mean hefty to be taken as overweight.

JaneB1rkin · 15/03/2012 10:32

Oh yes I like this idea.

I might even wear per una. Crinkly skirts in beige faux animal print and some kind of shawl thing.

the press would tear me to pieces. Great fun!

mcmooncup · 15/03/2012 10:37

What were dave and barrack wearing? Wink

teejwood · 15/03/2012 11:07

right - is discussing samcam's outfit justified? yes i think it is. as has been said before, we can discuss politics in the appropriate threads, but this is S&B and we do tend to comment on people in the public eye - why should samcam be exempt?

also i would say this, for a person to get to the top of their profession, their partner needs to be behind them 100%. i doubt samcam has really been dragged into number 10 kicking and screaming and she would have been well aware of the scrutiny she would be under (a la cherie). i'm sure it is vile to be living through it, but she knew that was part of the deal.

furthermore, we do need to consider her history and role. whether it has been the royal family or politicians/their partners, there is a track record of people in the public eye wearing british designers to promote british fashion - particularly on trips abroad. but the difference with samcam is precisely that she is NOT just another powerful man's wifely clotheshorse.

fashion is one of our leading creative industries. she herself worked in the industry, and would know how people are styled, what works and so on. she would also know that as a designer you want your item - dress/handbag (in her own case)/shoes/whatever - to be shown at its absolute best to get people thinking, i like that, i'll check out that designer - which ultimately translates into sales that are beneficial for UK plc.

to her credit she makes a conscious choice of wearing (mostly) british fashion, but in this case if she had (as others have said) just put her hair up to show off the neckline, she would probably have done herself and the designer a huge favour. so, my comments come from expectations based upon her previous career - as a woman in her own right - and make no judgement on her personally, her character, her husband or her politics. just because her style mojo is slightly off does not mean she is lacking in some way! gawd forbid.

after all, she wouldn't be the first 40-ish working mother to be having a wardrobe/presentation/posture crisis

teejwood · 15/03/2012 11:09

bloody hell - sorry for stream of consciousness essay Blush

Hullygully · 15/03/2012 11:14

this is so wrong

talkingnonsense · 15/03/2012 11:17

Did anyone else think she looked really good in the Victoria beckham dress though? I liked that.

ivykaty44 · 15/03/2012 11:18

I see this on facebook - girls of 13/14 liking each other for looking beautiful or having nice clothes - it is making me really sad, why can't we like people for who they are rather than what they are wrapped in?

nemno · 15/03/2012 11:19

Until I read this thread I thought she was doing just fine. :( Actually I still think she is, there is absolutely nothing she has done wrong.

MargueritaaPracatan · 15/03/2012 11:19

I really like Michelle O's wide leg trousers and cardi look, it's one I wear often!

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 11:19

I think there is a line that can be crossed - the line between saying 'yuck, that dress is horrid' and a full on character assassination based on looks.

I have no time for Sam Cam: she she isn't a politician, after all, but a very privileged woman who has only ever worked in a completely with a made-up job that one of her dad's friends probably gave her, so I dont have a major problem with slagging off her fugly coat, But it stops there for me. For others, maybe not.

Barack is hot whatever he wears. Cameron looks like he has had a botox botch-job.

That is all

Hullygully · 15/03/2012 11:20

I saw her get off the plane and cheered because she was wearing trousers and didn't have glued helmet hair. She looked...normal.

LucyManga · 15/03/2012 11:20

sorry, poor grammar but you get the gist I hope

Shanghaidiva · 15/03/2012 11:21

Sam Cam always looks so uncomfortable.
I liked the cerise top on her, but the turquoise and white top is hideous and unflattering.
Liked MO's blue dress, but she not the Mr T necklaces - cheap and tacky.

BearlyThere · 15/03/2012 11:22

the proportions on the pink top and trouser affair are wrong

the mac makes her look like a NVQ haridressing trainee

her hair is DIRE
her prediliction for High necked dresses makes her look like she is hiding burn scarring or something and just DOWDY

BearlyThere · 15/03/2012 11:23

WHY THE FUCK women go with husbands on these things god ONLY knows

teejwood · 15/03/2012 11:23

so is saying that the look might have worked better if she had stood up slightly straighter and tried putting up her hair "character assasination" or just a passing comment?

to even up the political balance, i saw tessa jowell this morning and thought she looked very sleek.

impossiblesitu · 15/03/2012 11:28

She does not look good and I usually love her

Essene · 15/03/2012 11:45

The dress is hideous - it looks like something out of the 1970s worn by the MD's wife at a boring drinks party.

But, I also think MO's dress was hideous too. She is so slope shouldered! Stand tall woman. Her outfit yesterday (yellow jacket, white trousers) did nothing to flatter her either, and she stands with her legs apart - so unfeminine.

Looking at the link lower down, I have no idea who half those people are but none of them look 100% right in what they are wearing. And why must gay male couples hold hands for photos? None of the heterosexual couples are.

Heyyyho · 15/03/2012 11:46

Michele O should cover up her shoulders!

I am Shock she got so many compliments here in that dress. She really doesn't get it right. She has a great attitude and every thing but all this style-queen stuff in nonsense.

Sam Cam strikes me as someone who doesn't want all the attention. She is perfectly presentable but no wow factor...

Essene · 15/03/2012 11:51

I can't be sure now, but wasn't the dress Sam wore to the Royal Wedding nice? And I definitely thought she looked lovely in the late stages of pregnancy.

Maybe she does have a hideous disfigurement on her upper chest? No points to the first person to say "yes, her husband". Wink
