Hi,

I'm getting married in less than two weeks time :D to my lovely gorgeous fiancé.

It's the 2nd time for both of us and we are having a registry office service and then onto a friends gastro pub for the do.

I really struggled with what to wear and ended up getting a candy Anthony 1950s dress. Now it's made, I really don't like it, well actually I just think its wrong, and I think it's going to make me look like a cute little girl, and I want to look like a stylish woman.
I'm only 5ft tall, but I'm 37. My fiancé will look gorgeous in a suit from Richard James he had made.
I didn't sleep at all last night looking at off the peg options. But I'm so confused. I've gorgeous bright blue louboutin shoes so needs to go with them. And I guess can't be long as no time for any alterations.

Zthank you so much, please help me x x

Gaston I love that dress, but i'd be an 8 and they are sold out.

I would get yourself to Selfridges or Peter Jones where you can try on lots of dresses.

Anna Sui has a lovely lace flapper dress which would look divine on someone petite and

this is adorable but ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ and both quite wrong for the shoes of course

ShoutyHamster · 25/04/2011 11:34

Could you change the colour of the underskirt? Because that red dress you linked to is STUNNING - the colour is amazing. Could it be the blue that makes it feel a bit wrong - a bit primary school?!

Of course that would rule out the shoes...

The dress is beautiful. The top part certainly isn't 'little-girl' at all. Have a very good think, it might well be nerves!

hellsbelles · 25/04/2011 11:35

Karbear - I think you are wise to go shopping today - it may be that by trying on other things you'll fall in love with your original dress...(that's what happened to me)...I do love the Issa (somewhere must have it in an 8!!)...I think you would look amazing in that - you look so young and beautiful.

Swedes2 · 25/04/2011 11:36

I think that Monsoon lace dress looks a bit cheap-looking.

Karbea - could you ask the designer for a different coloured underskirt? Is it possiblt it's the blue you don't like, really?

follyfoot · 25/04/2011 11:37

I dont think it matters if anyone else on here does or doesnt like the dress - you are the person who would be wearing it. And forget how much you have spent on it, put it down to experience. As I said before, you sound really unhappy about it, thats all that matters.

Hope you find something you really love, oh and your hair looks wonderful like that Smile

GastonTheLadybird · 25/04/2011 11:39

Do you live in London Karbea?

DvF with sleeves?

Karbea · 25/04/2011 11:43

Shouty, Swedes I think it's the blue skirt and the top I don't like, I think I should have gone with a straight top, rather than pinched in.

What about this with the feather boa?

or [[http://www.coast-stores.com/SAPHIRE-HITCHED-DRESS//-/fcp-product/2224684706 this?]

Karbea - personally, I think white flowers would be a mistake as they would fade against that dress. I would look for a single color bouquet, maybe in a strong dusky pink - trying to fit in with the shoes, so red would not work in my opinion.

Karbea · 25/04/2011 11:45

folly I know, I am, it's really getting me down :(

Gaston I'm in Bucks, so can easily get into London... was thinking maybe popping into Westfield...

Karbea · 25/04/2011 11:46

spamm I think strong dusky pink could work well with OH grey suit too.

Thank you x

This is gorgeous but don't have it in a size 8 but may in store McQueen (apols if already been linked)

TethersEnd · 25/04/2011 11:48

Whereabouts in the country are you, Karbea?

TethersEnd · 25/04/2011 11:50

xpost- have a look at Vintage in east london perhaps? Loads of shops around brick lane and spitalfields...

GastonTheLadybird · 25/04/2011 11:51

Don't like the feather boa one I'm afraid, bit much.

If I were you I would go to Harvey Nics and explain the situation, they're really helpful. Then maybe Harrods and Selfridges. That way you can try on loads of stuff and get a better idea of exactly what you want.

HuckingFell · 25/04/2011 11:52

what about the feather boa with your current dress and a matching blue sash?/white petticoat. Your hair is gorgeous perfect for the dress era. I love the dress btw.

tvoffnowplease · 25/04/2011 11:52

I LOVE it, you look so beautiful. The hair is very in keeping with the dress and might not look right with something else.
I think some kind of blue hair piece to pick up the shoes and underskirt would be fabulous. I am so jelous and also completely shocked that you don't realise how stunning you look!!!!!

tvoffnowplease · 25/04/2011 11:53

Ohhh and that biba link is just amazing, pleasae god my dp hurries up and asked me to marry him before that goes out of fashion or unavailable.

TethersEnd · 25/04/2011 11:54

Actually, have a look in Kingly Court off Carnaby Street...

spamm · 25/04/2011 11:55

Karbea - have you called the designers and spoken to them? They may be able to help, with other color underskirt and sash - looking at making you happy? Maybe that should be your first try?

If you can work a color that you are happy with, drop the shoes, wear them on your honeymoon and make the dress work for you.

But I agree with others, you need to want to get married in the dress! I tried on several dresses that I could see looked nice on me, but felt wrong. Then I tried on one that made me feel like a bride - big skirt, lots of tulle, but it made me feel right - I went for that and loved it.

TethersEnd · 25/04/2011 11:55

tvoff, I know what you mean about the Biba one! I have never ever wanted to get married and then I saw that dress...

SkinittingFluffyBunnyBonnets · 25/04/2011 12:02

I really lve the dress....but you have to love it....one thing I disagree about is the hair. It's completely 60s....the dress is 50s and the hair belongs to another era.

Could you consider a simpler hairdo?

chickchickchicken · 25/04/2011 12:05

that biba dress is my favourite. its stunning, sophisticated and beautiful

sorry OP i so wanted to reassure you it is just nerves but i do agree with you about the top half of the dress and the underskirt. i do like the dress and the underskirts but i wouldnt choose them for a wedding with the look you are aiming for

it seems as if you have thought it through and i would go with your gut instinct. sorry again but i dont see how your existing dress could be altered to give you the look you want

Swedes2 · 25/04/2011 12:08

OP - YES! I think that shrug is lovely. And talk to the designers - they will be able to make you a rose pink or cream underskirt.

And you'll just have to change the shoes.

Swedes2 · 25/04/2011 12:12

This Biba dress is beautiful too
