Do Scottish fans really not support England?

HouseofHills · 12/07/2024 10:57

There’s always a running joke about Scottish fans wanting anyone but England to win and supporting which ever team England is playing against. I totally get the friendly rivalry but is it actually true that most Scottish fans want England to lose in the Euros final or do most want England to win deep down given Scotland is out?

If England aren’t playing I think most England fans would support Scotland or Wales as fellow Brits, especially in a Euro or World Cup final!

Its getting boring now as it’s no longer a discussion anymore, as it’s the same 3/4 posters saying the same thing and won’t accept any other view and reasoning other than their own.

I mean, this thread is asking why Scottish people feel the way they do, so I don't think it is unexpected that Scottish viewpoints will hold more value than English ones about why Scotland feels how Scotland feels. But you're right, you have just as much right to tell people why Scotland feel what Scotland feels. Even to Scottish people.

Except it was an English person who created this thread because they were arsed about it 😂

The thread was started due to overtly distain to the England team. You’d never see a thread the other way around for the reason I described….. they don’t go out of their way to dislike Scotland!

Really must go to get these beers 🍺 tartar

Try again. Not one person on this thread said anything negative about the England team.

Well, I did imply that there is a lot of diving in football these days, but that isn't unique to England.

I'm Shock that after 624 posts, during which the statement has been made (by both Scots and English Wink) that the Scottish football team are crap and never win anything, that no one has pointed out that Scotland beat the (then Wink) world champions at Wembley in 1967 Grin

Nor that the current Scotland team beat Spain both home and away during the qualifying rounds for the Euros Wink

I'm with the (many) previous posters who've said that they like Southgate but that it's the media and its obsession with 1966 and inserting England into all the coverage that I can't thole.

Funnily enough I often enjoy watching stuff on TV about other countries.

But it's not presented to US as if it's about ANOTHER country, it's presented to US as if it's about US, it's NOT, we're SCOTTISH. That's our whole point, that's why we get pissed off and why, to answer the original question: yes, Scottish fans (for the most part) REALLY don't support England.

Why is that so difficult for the English to understand?🤷‍♂️

We didn't beat them away from home. Due to a very dodgy ref decision. But was at hampden for the home game - was awesome.

I'm currently watching Wimbledon. Fantastic match for Alcaraz. And already several mentions of England's game tonight. Instead of focusing on the actual sport being shown.

behave. It’s like the them us mentality that causes these issues

You're demonstrating the "them and us" attitude with your smirking.

I’ve answered. If you still don’t understand why then I can’t help that.

Oh, the irony of THAT post!

prettybird · 14/07/2024 16:07

@tigger1001 - no you're right. I misremembered what dh had reminded me: that we were undefeated by Spain Blush

I'm not really a football supporter Grin - and will be watching other TV channels tonight and for the foreseeable future if England win Wink

It's when 1966 gets brought into the commentary even during rugby games Confused (like last year at the World Cup Hmm) that our irritation grows.

Was gutted at that result in Spain - one bad decision and it changed the momentum of the game. But hey ho! Is what it is 😂😂

There are plenty of very arsed English people on here - I’m smirking at how bothered they are about another country not supporting their football team.

🤣

Soditsally · 14/07/2024 16:12

I'm 100% Scottish
Have lived in England for a long time
Will be supporting the boys tonight and very happy for them if they win the bastards 😂😂😂

You and I often disagree (not that I bother posting anymore on Scotsnet political threads Wink) but on this topic we're in agreement Grin

Yes I remember our political disagreements! We’re definitely in agreement here 😀

Nick Kyrgios talking at Wimbledon just now (about the football): "I'm Aussie, but I'll be backing the Brits tonight". No one corrected him. Britain = England 🙄

The casual conflation of Britain and England happens so often and it’s never corrected.

On a side note, did you hear Annabel Croft describing Alcaraz as hot instead of on fire?! 😂

😄 He's a very likeable character, too.

Alcaraz is indeed hot on fire Grin

nietzscheanvibe · 14/07/2024 18:46

Just now on BBC ENGLAND, the first sentence out of Lineker's mouth: "... I hope you're looking ahead to a night that could change the story of football in OUR country forever", to a UK-wide audience!

Erm... no, ya ignorant shite, it's not OUR country.🙄

Yes! I felt her embarrassment lol was funny and she took the ribbing in good grace

UnstablefromDunstable · 14/07/2024 19:05

Bit rich to criticise the English for harping on about 1966 when Scotland fans used to bring "Remember Bannockburn" banners to Home International games at Wembley! 710 years and counting.....,..
