Daughter had flies eggs in her ingrowing toenail

That's it. She is 18 and has refused to have the toenails dealt with properly. They have been persistent for a couple of years on her big toes - both sides. Frequently they bled and we have been on and on at her, as they usually look foul.
Anyway, today she saw some little white grains on the toes and after taking a pic to blow the image up, we could see they were flies eggs!! I cannot get over the image in my mind.
I scraped them off and we soaked her feet in water with disinfectant. I can't help worrying that I didn't get them all out.
Obviously she is now going to go to the Dr about them.

Is this too grim a picture for Sporners corner?

I’m at a loss at how this has happened? Have flies been landing on her toes?

Mumdiva99 · 04/06/2022 21:15

No pic....not real.....lol....we need to see.....

Libertybear80 · 04/06/2022 21:16

So maggots basically. Yes I've seen them in patients wounds before as a nurse.

BrownieBanana · 04/06/2022 21:17

I would have freaked if it was my toe!

Justcallmebebes · 04/06/2022 21:17

That's actually quite concerning. Are you saying flies lay larvae in her toe bed? Does she not bath/shower? How old is she?

BrownieBanana · 04/06/2022 21:19

Also, I've only ever heard of this happening in those with wounds linked to diabetes.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2022 21:19

Yes to a picture.

Yes to medical attention.

Maggots, she would have ended up with a lovely clean wound perfect for healing have seen great clean wounds from house fly larvae.

Easilystartled · 04/06/2022 21:30

COME ON!! Please x

BrianWankum · 04/06/2022 21:37

Yup, as a community nurse have seen a few leg ulcers with maggots - some being tested with the larvae in a tea bag style dressing, some have been surprises!

Unicorndreamsnight · 04/06/2022 21:43

Grim.

MatildaJayne · 04/06/2022 21:48

You need her to get antibiotics for the infection then see a podiatrist. She’ll need surgery on the toenails I reckon. GPs don’t know much about ingrowing toenails IME. My DS had surgery on both big toenails when he was 14 and 15. They didn’t remove them completely but made them narrower. They won’t get better on their own. It’s under local anaesthetic.

Basilbrushgotfat · 04/06/2022 21:52

Oi. Op. Come on. 😁

MagnoliaTaint · 04/06/2022 21:53

I don't know how I got on this thread, nor why I went and googled to see what fly's eggs look like, and especially not why I looked at some youtube videos. Sad

nomistake · 04/06/2022 21:54

Placemarking for pic. Never did I think I'd be so desperate to see a photo of fly eggs festering away in an ingrown toenail

dunpaying · 04/06/2022 21:55

Gosh .. shamelessly placemarking for the pic

WibblyWobblyLane · 04/06/2022 21:57
