Daughter had flies eggs in her ingrowing toenail

That's it. She is 18 and has refused to have the toenails dealt with properly. They have been persistent for a couple of years on her big toes - both sides. Frequently they bled and we have been on and on at her, as they usually look foul.
Anyway, today she saw some little white grains on the toes and after taking a pic to blow the image up, we could see they were flies eggs!! I cannot get over the image in my mind.
I scraped them off and we soaked her feet in water with disinfectant. I can't help worrying that I didn't get them all out.
Obviously she is now going to go to the Dr about them.

Is this too grim a picture for Sporners corner?

A soak in tepid solution of salty boiled water is best , salt is a natural antiseptic and draws . Less stinging than antiseptic So this a couple of times a day ( 5 minutes , fresh soloution then cover with sterile gauze )

Our cats bowls are removed within 30 minutes of them eating so theres no scraps to tempt flies , they are very quick to lay eggs .

Your DD reakky needs to get them sorted or she;ll get a constant cycle of infection, hypergranulation ( the red raw tissue that is repair tissue ) , it'll form scar tissue and she'll get more nail spikes and the whole cycle starts again.

What is she worried about ?
The procedure ? It;s very straightforward.
The injections? No worse than a dental injection.
A Podiatrist seeing her feet > Trust me m we've seen it ALL they are not going to run from the room waving their arms .

Please get her to get this seen to. I would see a GP first to check for infection, then pay a private podiatrist as the waiting time for NHS can be lengthy.

You need her to get antibiotics for the infection then see a podiatrist. She’ll need surgery on the toenails I reckon. GPs don’t know much about ingrowing toenails IME. My DS had surgery on both big toenails when he was 14 and 15. They didn’t remove them completely but made them narrower. They won’t get better on their own. It’s under local anaesthetic.

What infection are you talking about? The flies?

Could you please explain what antibiotics are going to do about the fly eggs?

Are you the type who wants antibiotics when they get a cold?

TheOnlyAletheia · 04/06/2022 22:02

I’ve told DS1 that he can only have a gap year if he comes back with bot fly larvae 😂

IDontDrinkTea · 04/06/2022 22:03

Just place marking as I want to see the photo 😁

That’s grim. Your dd needs a podiatrist. They sorted out DS1’s I growing toenail quickly and not too expensive.

I suffered with mine for many many months, about 23 years ago and eventually got it done on the NHS. Not sure they really do it now. They are the most painful things.

She wouldn't need antibiotics unless there is an infection , no .
But no amount of antibiotics will sort the nail if there's a spike , that needs removed .

If there's redness , heat , swelling , pus then she should send a photo to her GP / Out of Hours and let them assess it .
Obvious signs of spreading infection she'd need immediate ( ie A&E / 111)

Whoever looks at the nail will decide if she needs antibiotics before surgery , analgesics don't work as well with infection .

Maggots are used in wound care but they are sterile laboratory grown ones . they die after performing their miracles .

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/06/2022 22:14

Yeah one of my colleagues saw maggots in a wound. Not ones we’d paid hundreds of pounds to buy in sterile and it didn’t take two different professions going in with the granuflex to apply them. Free maggots.

user1473878824 · 04/06/2022 22:17

Oh OP, if this is real and she’s been refusing to see a doctor for nails this bad surely you need to be getting her some really urgent therapy. She must have been in agony with ingrown toenails for this long, and still refuses to see the GP?

EBearhug · 04/06/2022 22:18

I took in a rescue rabbit and I will never get over the fly eggs hatching.

Yes, we had a rabbit which died of flystrike. It was... memorable.

Hope the foot is okay.

twoandcooplease · 04/06/2022 22:20

Assuming this is fake but hoping it's real
Here for the update. ... oooh

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/06/2022 22:24

Oh my good god I've never seen such a horror in 20 years being a podiatrist. She must get them done. It's free on the NHS. I've had both mine done and they don't hurt at all. And we need a pic.

Definitely agree.
A human with ''Fly strike'' must have very poor hygiene/mental health.
That's so bad.
Rabbits in an excrement~ fouled cage have no choice, there is no escape, but a human..? They should get help.
Medical maggots are not from dirty house flies but likely especially bred in clean conditions.

A friend was a carer, and visited an elderly person who had toenails literally a couple of inches long.

She treated his feet herself, with strong clippers and he was so grateful.
The poor old boy couldn't even put shoes on prior to having his talons cut.

None of his other ''Carers'' had done anything about it.

cataline · 04/06/2022 22:37

I don't think we're getting a picture are we? Sad
