Daughter had flies eggs in her ingrowing toenail

Loveatthefiveanddime · 04/06/2022 20:34

That's it. She is 18 and has refused to have the toenails dealt with properly. They have been persistent for a couple of years on her big toes - both sides. Frequently they bled and we have been on and on at her, as they usually look foul.
Anyway, today she saw some little white grains on the toes and after taking a pic to blow the image up, we could see they were flies eggs!! I cannot get over the image in my mind.
I scraped them off and we soaked her feet in water with disinfectant. I can't help worrying that I didn't get them all out.
Obviously she is now going to go to the Dr about them.

Is this too grim a picture for Sporners corner?

I don't care if she's 90, this is neglectful. How can you let her toe get this bad?! The skin looks like it's rotting.

And bare with me here... you can't force medical care on someone who is competent. It's a little illegal

A Dr would not do it.

And no, that’s fair enough, you can’t force that on anyone. It’s shame OP didn’t take her before this age to get it sorted 😔

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/06/2022 23:39

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 04/06/2022 23:34

None of his other 'carers' had done anything about it. We aren't allowed that's why!

But any of the other carets could have set the ball in motion to get the man Podiatry treatment , contact his GP or other HCP to make the referall.

Anyhow , I don;t think theres a photo , or if there is it'll be one plucked off T'InterWeb

Call me a liar there's a photo !

She's got a good old scabby looking escar there and underneath that will be the hypergranulation and the nail spikes .

Just use salted water ( boil it , good spoon of table salt , dissolve and cool till warm) No creams etc, you don't want the skin getting boggy .
The salt will be strong enough to kill them.

And yes , she needs that properly looked at She will be mightily relieved once she has

Thank you so much for your kind and calm voice and advice.
This has brought her up sharp and focussed her in a way that my words never did, so she is going to make an appointment next week. A silver lining to the fly eggs..

She said it started two years ago so she was 16 so a child.
As a mother regardless if she was 8 or 18, if your child is wishfully neglecting their health, it is your duty to get them help.

I agree. I am actually disgusted that the OP didn't get help for her daughter before now. It started at 16, and she is now 18. TWO years it has been like this/getting worse. Now there's MAGGOTS and flies in there.

Jesus wept, get her to A & E @Loveatthefiveanddime before she gets sepsis or gangrene... if she hasn't got it already! What the hell is wrong with you? Shock 18, 16, 14, or 20, or 22 or older, I would absolutely have taken my daughter to seek medical help LONG before now.

Fuck bathing it in salt water as several posters have said. This needs medical intervention. The posters advising this, have fuck-all medical knowledge, (clearly, as they are advising such a batshit solution!) and don't know what is wrong with her bloody foot anyway. Get her to A & E - ASAP.

And ignore anyone saying you should not be wasting their time. They have pissheads, and people who have taken drugs in there. Some people go because they've got a fucking cold or headache! Taking this horrific infection in there (that could well end up with your daughter losing her foot,) is NOT a waste of NHS time, so fuck anyone who says that.

BetsyBigNose · 04/06/2022 23:40

I'm surprised to read that PPs have had trouble getting their GP to act with regard to ingrowing toenails. All the women in my DM's side of the family suffer from really painful ingrowing big toenails and most of us have had them operated on.

I took my 13 year old DD to see the GP earlier this year, as I was keeping on top of them as much as I could at home (regular soaking and cutting etc.), but one in particular was getting more and more painful. Initially, the GP said that she couldn't refer her until she had had to have antibiotics for an infection in the same toe 3 times! DD has never had to have antibiotics for an infected ingrowing toe, because she (and I) keep a close eye on them, and keep them clean. I asked the GP if she wanted me to go away and let my child get infections, or should we ignore this ridiculous rule and just get her referred immediately and thankfully, she had an appointment to have the op within a week.

The operation is very quick and recovery is straightforward. There is no reason why OP's DD shouldn't have it done, it's clearly very necessary. I can't believe anyone would let them get that bad, they must be incredibly painful - but as a sporner, I did think the picture was pretty special, so thank you @Loveatthefiveanddime for sharing it!

Hope she now agrees to treatment. I had horrible in growing toenails around that age (no flies eggs 🤢 ) Mine were caused by too small socks - girls school socks required uniform were only in shoe size 4-7 and I was an 8. I didn’t neglect them had chiropodist, nails removed under local anaesthetic by gp twice and countless antibiotics. But nothing worked until I had side sections of both big toe nails removed under general anaesthetic age 21. No issues since. Mine had got so bad only surgery sorted them.

Your daughter needs to seek medical attention ASAP. This could lead to a serious infection and worse. Is it possible your daughter has mental health issues? I don’t know any young women who would leave their feet in this condition and I have 8 nieces. 14-22. Is she proactive in personal hygiene? It’s must be worrying I hope she seeks help x

MissMaple82 · 04/06/2022 23:44

You must live in some rank environment to have flies lingering about and to be so laid back about the state of your child's foot!!! The thing is about to drop off 🤢

annonymousse · 04/06/2022 23:44

I did a seminar years ago about maggot therapy. Although it's gross the maggots eat all the necrotising flesh and clear away the infection. Obviously the maggots are specially bred and not just random fly eggs but it was amazing seeing how they can help

I wanna know if it's worse that what I have in my head.

Stop it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Exactly this. There's something very wrong here. With the girl (young woman) and the parent(s) who have let her foot rot and fester like this.

Wind your neck in. If you read my post back you will notice I said bathe in salt water IN THE MEANTIME then get it seen to asap. Salt is a good antiseptic as anyone with half a brain knows, that's why dentists recommend you rinsing with it after oral surgery and doctors telling you to use it on wounds to aid healing.

I don't know anything about ingrown toenails, I had the beginning of one twice in my life but nipped it in the bud at home. Out of curiosity why wouldn't the NHS help with them?

Sorry your daughter has had this OP, it must be really worrying. I'm glad to hear she's going to a doctor, hopefully she will feel better soon. It can be really hard to go to the doctor about certain things, nobody should be judging you or your daughter based on this.

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 04/06/2022 23:51

@PurpleButterflyWings no they do still use maggot therapy on wounds in the Nhs it's just they're sterile

PurpleButterflyWings · 04/06/2022 23:53

Fuck 'maggot therapy.' This needs serious medical intervention. WTF is wrong with some people on here?! Shock This lass could lose her bastard foot!

annonymousse · 04/06/2022 23:53

@PurpleButterflyWings it wasn't advice. I stated a fact. I did indeed attend a seminar about maggot therapy. I pointed out those maggots are specifically bred. At no point did I advise op to let these fly eggs hatch and treat the infection.

LongfordBandito · 04/06/2022 23:53

Don't waste A and E's time , I had worse toenails for years from teenage to late 20s. Going through cycles of antibiotics , various treatments and removals till I finally had them permanently removed. Give them a good clean and antiseptic cream and make an appointment first thing on Monday.

PurpleButterflyWings · 04/06/2022 23:54

Are people seriously telling the OP to let the maggots do their business and leave it be?!

Fuck me sideways, PLEASE tell me you don't have children! Shock

Could just be one fly. Everyone has had a fly in their house.
