This has been going on for long enough that you could have registered with a dentist and had a routine appointment by now, rather than an emergency one.

Tell the nurse practitioner you would like an urgent referral to oral medicine/oral surgery.

All very odd and badly managed tbh.

ShinyNewUsernameToday · 09/07/2017 23:25

I am on the waiting list for an nhs dentist...

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 10/07/2017 16:09

These are the dentists within a 3 hour radius of me - only 2 accepting nhs patients for which I am on the waiting list for one.

I think you should ring the one whose list you are on and tell them your history.
I am really concerned about you and disappointed in the nurse practioner tbh.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 17/07/2017 22:54

Saw GP and been given oral steriod creams and mouthwash. Have an appt again in 2 weeks and if it's still there then I'll have an urgent referral so my mind is eased a bit more now.

Whst did the gp say about the abnormal blood results?

BunnyBardot · 24/07/2017 07:11

Please update when you've had your appointment OP. Worried about you Flowers

Footle · 24/07/2017 08:40

I don't understand why this isn't being treated with more urgency. What about the blood results? Did the GP explain them?

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 24/07/2017 23:14

Still here, been using the steriod cream and mouthwash as prescribed with no change so back to gp mon next week as he suggested and then will finally get the referral. The ulcer has now developed a pussy area.
Re the bloods being abnormal he said it could be down to my liver disorder - which I didn't actually know had been diagnosed :/

Just counted through the weeks it's been a minimum of 17 weeks - probably a lot longer.
I am prone to mouth ulcers (have SLE/lupus) and noticed in may I had this stubborn one a long time and normally I wouldn't think like that so could well be that it's been here about 5/6 months

Hopefully it's all okay. But please see a dentist unless your go refers you to ent. Sooner rather than later x

crazycatguy · 24/07/2017 23:52

I suffered from mouth ulcers for a number of years and the only thing that shifted them was Adcortyl in Orabase - was a brown paste that didn't taste too nice. About 6 years ago it was withdrawn from sale in the UK entirely.

It is still for sale in New Zealand, under the name Kenalog. Costs me the best part of £20 ordering it and having it shipped but it's an investment - I always have it in the house!

FeralBeryl · 24/07/2017 23:53

To be honest, at this stage I would be looking for the nearest hospital with a maxillo facial unit and presenting at Accident and Emergency.
I would never advocate this ordinarily, but this has now become a lesion and needs urgent investigation - especially in light of your blood results.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 25/07/2017 00:01

The nearest unit that deals with this is 2.5 hours away (don't drive, have children etc) so when I see gp mon and get this urgent referral (if it doesn't miraculously go by then!) I will have to sort something for then as in transport and childcare so will wait for that appointment I think is my only option. I may ring gp though tomorrow as I am getting slightly worried now.

OP posts:
FeralBeryl · 25/07/2017 00:05

Please do! I really don't mean to be alarmist, but you would be seen under a 2 week rule in lots of areas of the country.
Do they do telephone appointments at your GP? If so, even a very firm chat tomorrow morning may help.
Jot down the facts before you call i.e. Length of time since you noticed.
Stress the fact that you've smoked
Not improving despite steroid tx
Abnormal blood results

You are receiving a sub standard level of care here. This needs seeing in person by an experienced professional (if only you lived near lovely Mrs Morton! ) Smile

Goldrill · 25/07/2017 00:07

I have long term mouth ulcer problems too, and various weird and wonderful lichenoid reactions etc. My GPs have never been in any way helpful, apart from for blood tests.

My dentist, however, takes photos of anything slightly persistent so he can recheck them, and has referred me for a biopsy on a particularly stubborn thingy.

Great though GPs are, my (limited) experience is that dentists are a lot more on the ball with exactly what may be serious. I think I'd be on that bus to an emergency centre tbh. Pus would probably do that.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 25/07/2017 00:31

@feryl what's a lesion Blush
I know I wish I lived closer to Mrs M or even closer to humanity!

Gah sorry - it just means an abnormality in the tissue. You made me use proper terminology because I was too busy being concerned Wink try not to panic, you've got a plan in place now. Get some rest and prepare your RIGHT! voice ready for tomorrow Flowers

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 25/07/2017 04:03

Aw bless you. Yes I will, I've woken up.because it's sore already so I'm going to ring gp, this has gone on long enough now. Thanks for the concern FlowersGin
