It's important to me that they are cotton, and feel soft to the touch, easy to get on and off - poppers in the right places. I would always check the washing instructions on the item of clothing, and go for neutral colours so I could use them again - or pass them on to other mums.

Before I had a baby I used to be swayed by the designs or texture of clothes, cute little sets and things that matched...

After having a baby I now look for anything that can be chucked in the washing machine with a general load of laundry. There is nothing worse than having a lovely outfit which has impractical washing instructions clearly designed by someone who has never had to endure the never ending laundry pile of a parent with a newborn who has reflux. 😂😂

Ease of dressing - no fiddly fasters, they can be tumble dried, no nylon, well made with good seams, poppers not buttons on the crotch, organic cotton appeals - but tends to be more expensive, so any good quality material would suffice - I would, if buying on line look at past buyers feedback for reassurance that the products were of a good quality and a suitable size for the age group they are intended.

• Decent gender neutral range (and not just a few cream and lemon items, I mean a whole range in a wide variety of colours and designs that are not separated into "girls" and "boys" sections)

How easy is it to get to her nappy? Can I get it on and off without going over head, as she will cry. Is it good quality and will last more than one baby? Can I just chuck it in the machine? How expensive is it, especially as she Will be out of it in couple months. Will it accommodate a cloth nappy? Is the design nice? Prefer to buy something for a baby rather than it has to be girl/ boy clothes a. It's useful if you don't know sex, b. Useful if you save the clothes for next baby, c. I love dinosaurs but tend to find them in boys clothes and d. I don't dress in sickly pink so why would my daughter.

Ease of dressing - before having my own children I'd buy any babies I knew the cute little button through shirts & trousers with braces etc that looked very cool but must have been a nightmare to wrestle a baby into!
When I had a child they just wore whatever was easiest!

Colours, materials, and this is true especially for boys. I hate the way UK clothes for male babies and youth are so restricted in their colours and types of material. Have some fun with it all.

There are lots of things that are important to me in baby clothes for a new baby.

Soft, stretchy cotton.

Thoughtful placement of fasteners and eg embroidery or appliqués so they don't rub, or press into skin when the baby is lying down.

Easy to put on or take off for nappy changes. You don't always want to have to remove the whole outfit.

Careful design. I don't want something for a baby that rides up and bunches uncomfortably or gives them a cold back.

I like clothes with fold back cuffs and ankles so they can last a bit longer and fit a wider range of sizes.

I would always prefer baby clothes with printed care instructions rather than scratchy labels.

Washing well, good quality fabric is important.

Nicely patterned fabrics are the icing on the cake.

I'm expecting my first, so my preferences might change with experience. But for now, what I look for us ideally:

• soft cotton, organic if possible.
• comfort and simplicity - when the baby is a newborn, I doubt I'll be dressing them in "outfits".
• varied gender neutral options. I'm not finding out the sex before birth and also wouldn't be keen on my baby being pigeonholed/ having gender stereotypes applied. So I'm keen on a mix of neutral and bright shades.
• some with fun patterns. I especially love nature inspired patterns.
• things to make dressing easier. Poppers still confuse me a bit so I like it when there's a different coloured one to help you know where to start!
• and ethical manufacture if at all possible

Comfort is important to me, so cotton only and nothing tight, restrictive or itchy. I like it when someone has clearly thought about comfort, like little pouches over zips to stop them rubbing, fold over bits on snow suits to stop little hands getting cold etc.

I've had a few zipped babygrows which were amazing for ease!

Absolutely the most important thing is the ease and comfort of dressing my DD and the quality of the material for it to be durable enough to cope with a fair few washes.

I also do look for pretty, bright clothes because I love picking them out for her and they bring us all so much joy!

Most important thing is that the fabric is soft and cuddly cotton not irritating newborn skin. As less seams as possible and just the right thickness of the fabric. Also important for me personally is how planet friendly the process of making it is and how it is packaged and what else the brand is doing to offset their carbon footprint.

Firstly I want it to be comfy for my little girl, no buttons or seams in places that look like they would irritate.
Secondly, I like clothes that reflect her little personality. She is sunny and mischievous and doesn't look right in big bows and frills!

For me it is ease of dressing and simple designs. I like the clothes to be soft, wash well and designed to be removed easily. I like prints to be non garish. Stripes, animals, floral motifs all good. Thick, soft jersey fabric is best. Poppers in preference to buttons or zips.
