Whether you’re purchasing for your own baby or as a gift for a loved one, selecting newborn baby clothes can be a really special experience. However, there can be a lot to consider, so in celebration of their new organic cotton newborn range, Baby Boden would like to hear what’s important to you when choosing baby clothes.

Here’s what Boden has to say: “Baby Boden is excited to share its brand new newborn organic cotton range. In a selection of aww-inspiring designs with Boden signature details, the new collection is made from snuggly soft organic cotton which is kinder to the planet and gentle on the softest of skin.

The collection features snuggly zip-up sleepsuits, bodies in packs of 3, reversible styles, dresses, hats, dungarees, and also gift sets ranging from 4 to 7 pieces, which all come in a matching fabric bag or a beautiful Baby Boden gift box - perfect for gifting new parents who are expecting a new arrival. The whole range is machine washable, and carefully constructed with the safety and comfort of little ones in mind so you don’t have to worry.”

Do you put a lot of thought into the fabric of your baby’s clothes, perhaps preferring organic cotton? Is it important to you that your baby’s clothes are as soft as possible? Perhaps your clothing choices are influenced by the fabric’s effect on your baby’s skin? Or are you most interested in the washability and longevity of your choices? Maybe you’re most interested in the placement of poppers, buttons or zips, to ensure it’s convenient when you need to do a swift nappy change?

All who share what they believe to be most important when purchasing baby clothes will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 Boden voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

They need to be cotton, soft to the touch, generous enough in cut to fit cloth nappies and able to go in the tumble dryer. Ideally organic too. Not that I'm fussy or anything Grin

Soft, comfy, practical and fun. I like cute prints that are a bit different but generally nature themed.
Boden tends to be good quality and they have some lovely designs. I'd buy a lot more if I had a bit more cash.

I agree that it is important to have enough space for cloth nappies, I hope they will become much more common in the coming years. Washable clothes is the main thing for me right now, as I have a 6month old baby making a right mess of everything with food and various fluids. I think I'd prefer fun bright colours to the usual soft colours. Organic is definitely a plus.

I think there are several ‘must haves’:-

  • Fabric to be natural, sustainable, soft to the skin and no seams/ press studs/ zips etc directly on the skin.
  • Design to be practical for dressing and nappy changes. Wrap around, not taken off over head, especially for 0-6 months.
  • Washable at low temperatures with non-bio powder/ liquid.
  • Colours which don’t show up typical stains would be better than whites/ creams, especially around the neck, leg holes and nappy areas.
  • Affordability. Quality, classic clothes can be bought for less elsewhere.

100% comfort. if your baby isn't comfortable the only way they have to tell you about it is crying! so

  • no pockets, fasteners etc on the back, they'll dig into the baby when they lie down
  • soft flexible fabric, no denim, no sweaty man made fibres
  • no pinchy waistbands. You occasionally get leggings and trousers for babies with waistbands like you get on maternity trousers. they are perfect
  • for mysterious reasons, all boys babygrows have pockets. Babies own literally nothing. no pockets. they can dig in and are utterly unnecessary!

Practicality and durability mainly. And also I preferred cheerful bright colours.

My main criteria is that they are second hand, ideally free! If choosing myself however I go for quality cotton, simple pieces that aid movement and changing, and nothing too gendered. Dislike anything with slogans and characters.

Two things - the design -so practical and fuss free for ease of changing and the ability to be tumble dried so I can Chuck it all in and spend time with my baby rather than
Wasting time hanging on the line

I've just been thinking about this as there's a new baby due in the family. My priorities would be soft cotton, no seams or fasteners that would rub, obviously must wash well. I prefer neutral colours rather than blue/pink, but also like bold patterns and colours - doesn't always have to be white.
Must be easy to get a wirggly baby in and out of at 3am when sleep deprived - so no back fasteners or complicated popper arrangements. Envelope necks are good and wrap round designs. I found all in ones with feet could be tricky, prefer wrap round bodies and leggings. The leggings do not need pockets. Save those for us.

Soft, comfort, ease of putting on and removing, and not trying to imitate older fashions

I'm a grandmother now so am buying, not just based on my own preferences, but trying to think of what others will like so I try to pick things that are practical, easy to get on and off, feel good and wash well as well as looking as gorgeous as my grandbabies!

absolutely has to be super practical! Poppers to access nappies, easy to put over the head easily etc.

Then after that, softness is next priority - with gentle seams (or seam free) so nothing to irritate of rub on the skin.

Nothing too "grown up" looking in style - I prefer babies to look like babies whilst they are little rather than trying to look like mini grown ups!

Nice to have a range of colours to choose from rather than just pastels which is what newborns often have - in fact anything that might hide stains better is a good idea.

Soft, natural fabrics, easy to wash, and comfortable for baby. I agree about fitting cloth nappies...but don't just make the clothes wider everywhere. I have a relatively slim baby in cloth nappies, and most of the stuff designed for cloth is comical on her. Also a good range of gender-neutral colours and patterns – I'd love it if this were the core of the range, not an afterthought.

Comfort for baby

Design - animals, grammatically correct, pretty colours

Doesn’t lose shape or colour in the wash

Can be adapted size-wise to “grow” with baby

I'm looking for beautiful, soft clothes which I can pass down to my next baby or future nieces or nephews.

Comfort for the baby, something that washes well and keeps shape. I prefer natural fabrics as well.

Easy to wash and dry, easy to get on and off, and nice and soft! Cute outfits are lovely but so often impractical. A nice design is a bonus!

I look for poppers not zips as they make nappy changes so much easier, lovely soft materials, ease of washing and drying and beautiful colours.

Tealchoc · 23/01/2021 07:43

I look for cotton clothes that feel soft and have an element of give in them so baby’s movements are not constricted.
I want clothes that can be washed and tumble dried without shrinking.
I haven’t tried sleepsuits with zips before, I would be a bit concerned about the zip breaking so would want some sort of replacement guarantee if this happened.

The most important thing for me is that they are sustainable and ethical. Organic cotton is better than non-organic but it still takes an eye-watering amount of water to grow. The best and most affordable solution to this is to buy second-hand clothing (although it doesn’t help that charity shops are closed at the moment)!

Poppers or zips all the way down not just inbetween the legs like Boots do.

I love bright colours and bold patterns not baby pinks and baby blues.

Soft fabrics are lovely.

No back buttons or poppers like Jojo or than posh range at John Lewis that looks like the total family would wear.

Soft natural fabrics, comfortable for the baby and easy to get on and off.
Also easy to wash and dry.

Nice designs that aren't overly boy/girl. Lots of colours and patterns to choose from. I'm personally not a fan of writing on clothes.

Soft and comfortable fabric

Easy to take on and off - buttons are a definite no!

Bright gender neutral colours

Bonus if they do the same print in bigger sizes for family twinning!
