Whether you’re purchasing for your own baby or as a gift for a loved one, selecting newborn baby clothes can be a really special experience. However, there can be a lot to consider, so in celebration of their new organic cotton newborn range, Baby Boden would like to hear what’s important to you when choosing baby clothes.

Here’s what Boden has to say: “Baby Boden is excited to share its brand new newborn organic cotton range. In a selection of aww-inspiring designs with Boden signature details, the new collection is made from snuggly soft organic cotton which is kinder to the planet and gentle on the softest of skin.

The collection features snuggly zip-up sleepsuits, bodies in packs of 3, reversible styles, dresses, hats, dungarees, and also gift sets ranging from 4 to 7 pieces, which all come in a matching fabric bag or a beautiful Baby Boden gift box - perfect for gifting new parents who are expecting a new arrival. The whole range is machine washable, and carefully constructed with the safety and comfort of little ones in mind so you don’t have to worry.”

Do you put a lot of thought into the fabric of your baby’s clothes, perhaps preferring organic cotton? Is it important to you that your baby’s clothes are as soft as possible? Perhaps your clothing choices are influenced by the fabric’s effect on your baby’s skin? Or are you most interested in the washability and longevity of your choices? Maybe you’re most interested in the placement of poppers, buttons or zips, to ensure it’s convenient when you need to do a swift nappy change?

All who share what they believe to be most important when purchasing baby clothes will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 Boden voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Neutral colours so can share between siblings (sentimental reasons as well as cost and environment), also the nightie style of sleep suits with elastic at the bottom are great for night time changes when they are very little.
Plain white basics are also great as easier to bleach if they get stained

That it's soft, ethically sourced fabric that's machine washable. Bonus for pretty patterns in pastel colours!

Bright colours rather than whites; we only have a couple of white clothing items in our own wardrobes, so we'd never have a full wash of white clothes to put baby clothes with.

In the main we went for separates rather than all in ones so that it was less of a faff to change clothes and nappies.

When my son was a newborn i was very particular about making sure that the fabric he worn was very soft to the touch. Also, it was really important that there was 'easy access' via poppers to change his nappy regularly. I found sleepsuits the most practical for the first few months.

My priorities were:

Natural fibres including thread and trim.
The option to hot-wash
No drawstrings, or small buttons or trim that could pose a threat
Other colours than pink or blue.
For slightly older babies, tough fabrics on knees

I love cotton clothes ,easy washable and comfy..I do like bright colours as they cheer you up on dreary days and white for summer days

Durability is probably one of my top priorities. I don't want to buy clothes that are going to look old and worn out after only a few washes. Popper placement is essential - I was once given baby gros with poppers up the back which was just a massive pain with a baby that can't sit up yet! Price is also a factor. Baby clothes are always just one massive poo away from being unsalvageable, so there's no way I would want to pay through the nose for clothes for very young children. I also like gender neutral designs/colours. Much easier to then pass between siblings/hand on to friends.

to me its the feel of the fabrics the ease of use and the price as they are not in them for long

The most important elements to me when buying baby clothes are that they 100% cotton, so are nice and soft for babies skin, and prefer organic cotton so it's better for the planet too, and that they can be washed at normal, lower temperatures (30 / 40 degrees) with everything else to make life easier! We all know how many times a day you have to change baby, so making the clothes quick and easy to clean whilst protecting the planet is vital.

Additional factors I consider are multi packs for younger babies, again because you go through so much, but also nice designs. Flat colours are perfect for me, but for a baby I think it's nice for the little one to wear designs and patterns.

Items that wash well, don’t bobble and can withstand stain remover etc to get rid of the obligatory orange stains from the purée phase.

Washable, soft fabrics are really important for me, I had a lot of light colours with my first but now expecting baby number 3 and there's a lot to be said for bright colours that don't show marks so easily!
I like them to be easy to fasten, poppers can be fiddly but I worry about zips catching on skin so neither is really best. I definitely didn't like ones that went on over the head, much too difficult with a newborn.

Comfort and stretch.
Easy washing and no ironing!
Easy dressing- dresses with poppers all the way down the back so they don't have to be pulled over heads.
Pants to go over nappies- these need to go up to age 3-4 again. Some babies (like mine) are big and in ages 3-4 when they are only 18 months and not out of nappies.
A range of prints on 'girls' and 'boys' clothes. I like matching too.

For me, fabric is really important as I don't want anything that could be scratchy or uncomfortable on my little ones skin. I always look for organic cotton in the first instance, but if that's really not available I'll go for cotton.

Next I look for things that are machine washable and can be tumble dried. You go through so many clothes that something easy and quick to wash and dry is essential.

And finally for a practical angles, I like easy openings. Poppers are great, and I prefer these over buttons which are a lot more fiddly, and whilst zips are super easy I'm personally not a fan as I worry about catching babies skin, how cold it feels etc.

Nice designs are always a plus as well. Whilst u don't love really bright colours, I do want the clothes to have designs and personality just as my outfits would!

Most important for me are washability and longevity- not shrinking as I tumble dry everything. Also having zips rather than poppers or kimono style poppers

Mine is all about looks! I like it to be fun and bright for children and i prefer colours which are darker rather than the whites and pale pastels as easily stained

GIRLS

No fucking frills....
No "cute/beautiful/pretty/mummy's little princess" slogans - basically remove anythign that reinforces the idea that girls must only give a shit about their appearance.
Have more than flowers, fairies and fucking unicorns as patterns

BOYS
remove pointless pockets
remove the "here's comes trouble/monster/ it wasn't me" slogans - stop reinforcing the idea that boys are allowed to be horrible and not show "feminine" emotions

UNISEX

Make BOLD colours and prints normal. Bring n the zebras and penguins, and geometric patterns./ bring on RED, YELLOW, GREEN, PURPLE, ORANGE etc...stop with the pink/blue

I choose clothes for my littles ones which are made of 100% cotton, snuggle soft, have no irritating seams, buttons or poppers to dig into them, wash well and are good quality.

Easy to get on and off, easy to wash. No "adult" sounding slogans anywhere. When mine were little, I loved 2-piece outfits, trousers and a top for ease of changing.

The following are important:

Quality of the product
Ease of getting on and off
Sensible sizing
Not running in the wash or shrinking when put in a dryer
Nice design- and by that I mean for children not a miniature version of an adult garment
Sensible fabric for a child/baby - soft and practical
