Home is a place many of us feel our most comfortable and happy, and making your house a place you feel like you can truly call home is personal and individual. Crown would like to hear your tips for making your home a happy place.

Here’s what Crown has to say: “We have exciting new paint shades to update your home this spring in our Breatheasy® matt and silk finish which is 99% solvent free and now certified asthma & allergy friendly® – a fresh look for your room and peace of mind for you, allowing you to create a healthier and happier home”

Have you added a splash of colour to your walls to brighten up your home? Perhaps you’ve filled your home with art that inspires you, or you have plants in every room to bring life to your surroundings?

All who post below what makes their home a happy place will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list), plus £100 worth of paint of their choice from crownpaints.co.uk.

Thanks and good luck

I love colour in my home, yellows, sky blue, lilac and silver are the emulsions I have used in the past. My radiators have splash of colour too which I love to make a feature of the room - I love my silver radiator in my living room! I love mirrors, fairy lights, cushions and large green rubber plants in the corners of my room. I think the Breatheasy® range would be the paint I would use for my nursery, with a subtle colour, lots of colourful stickers. I think a paint which is asthma & allergy friendly® is wonderful as DS2 has mild asthma and I have been put of repainting in the winter as I cannot ventilate as well as I can in summer months. I have looked and the website and will be requesting some matchpot samples to decide on my next colour.

Only have what you absolutely need, use, and love

StickChildNumberTwo · 08/04/2019 16:03

Everyone having their own space, and places to keep all their stuff so it's not too much of a mess.

Realitea · 08/04/2019 17:57

I just love looking after the house, it makes me feel really satisfied when I walk in to a room and it's clean, clear of clutter and has a nice faint smell of something nice. Having a family of four makes that quite rare though but I try my best! I like lots of books, candles, flowers everywhere which makes it feel cosy, happy and relaxing.
We're currently doing up our kitchen and I can't wait until it's finished. It'll be the first room ever that I've designed, had fitted and decorated to my taste, after years and years of renting. I like light colours as it's an old cottage, so I'm going for an almondy colour. All other walls are white. Clean, fresh and simple.

My house will never be tidy with my two kids in it but its a happy and welcoming place - we have lots of books and plants and our lovely cat purring in a corner. I think a big cosy couch with lots of cushions is a must!

Mummymummums · 08/04/2019 22:49

I love displaying special bits the children have made/drawn.
Nice smells help a lot - a couple of nice candles.
I also try to make sure stuff is moved to where it should live at the end of the day - clutter quickly builds up.

My home being safe, warm and clean with no shouting and positive thoughtful parenting and lots of cushions lol

Quietvoiceplease · 09/04/2019 06:25

We're almost at the end of major building works/renovation, so it is fun now to think about the decorative/furnishing choices. I appreciate that everyone is different, but the things that make me feel most happy in our home are:

  • clean and tidy, nothing I love more than decluttering. We are certainly not a spartan household (we have 3 DDs) but I do not hoard things, and I am sure this makes me feel more calm at home;
  • plants and flowers, and a candle burning occasionally
  • pictures on the wall, accumulated from our travels, and photos up.
  • noise. The children are home, the laundry being done, the dinner being cooked, piano being 'played', someone's playlist on too loud, feet up and down the stairs, 'where's my [random object]?' being regularly shouted downstairs. That's home.

Music and laughter are the 2 essentials. I'd love to say a tidy house with a place for everything and everything in its place but we are a long way off that here and I doubt we'll ever get to that point! We do have a wood burner which is a cosy focal point and diverts the eyes away from the mess!

daisyjean2008 · 09/04/2019 13:12

Our home is happy when we play, laugh, talk, learn and feel safe. I always want my children to know that this is their home forever and there will be a place for them always.

misskatamari · 09/04/2019 14:59

I love our home to be light and filled with colour. Most of our walls are quite neutral but we have some splashes of colour and lots of colourful accessories. Family photos and the kids artwork on display make me happy too

kelandab · 09/04/2019 15:40

We let the kids get involved in decorating the house, they take more pride knowing that they contributed to our lovely little home and it only serves to make more memories when we spend time doing even the most mundane tasks together

Melkee123 · 09/04/2019 16:31

I spend quality time talking to my children. I gave my daugther free reign in her room to decorate as she sees fit.

PhysaliaPhysalis · 09/04/2019 16:38

We've just bought our first house, and we feel like we're squatting in someone else's house; except for one room. It's got our battered old sofa in it from when our oldest child was born, a massive plant that I miraculously haven't yet murdered, and lot of little reminders of what makes our family our family - photos, knick knacks made at school, things that mark our interests.

Really hope that the rest of the house feels like ours soon.

ChoccyJules · 09/04/2019 20:42

When we had the kitchen done we kept the old, non-integrated fridge so it could be a place of magnets, cutting, pictures etc. I feel it softens the room and makes it about family.

buckley1983 · 09/04/2019 20:53

I love interior design & seeing how people share a little bit about themselves in the way they decorate their home.
I like white walls - but use unusual/unique items to add my stamp to it. I like unusual woodcut prints & random quirky bits picked up in a charity shop or jumble sale. We found a great set of brass swallows at a car boot so they are hung on the wall in the lounge - along an owl clock from the 1970s!!
It's not about how much you spend, or the designer of an item - it's about what appeals to you & what makes you feel comfortable.
We've gone for a feature colour wall in the bedrooms - easy to update as LO grows up & his tastes change & it just makes the rooms a bit warmer rather than keeping all the walls white.

Babycarmen · 09/04/2019 22:30

Having photos of friends and family, inspiring and motivating art work and keeping the place looking fresh. I recently re-painted inside of the built in wardrobes and something so small made a huge difference to the room and the feel of it.

TickleMeEmo · 10/04/2019 07:39

A good comfy sofa big enough for everyone to settle in on a movie night, and lots of pictures, artwork and trinkets.

Foodylicious · 10/04/2019 10:14

Photos up and no where being an 'adult only' area.
Having a table for eating, craft, making, doing and chatting!

Innernutshell · 10/04/2019 11:06

Colour in a home brings me joy ~ colour swatches = hours of happy browsing. Grin

SCST01 · 10/04/2019 14:09

I like my home to reflect us and our lives. I like photos from holidays, my children's creations and handmade touches. One of my children suffers with ADHD so I am trying to tone down some of my clutter/treasure and use more soft palettes (personally, I'm drawn to bright saturated colours) - this should help make our home less over-stimulating for him.

I'd be delighted to win some paint vouchers to help me on my way to a calmer sanctuary for us all 😊

daisyduke66 · 10/04/2019 14:18

Fresh coat of paint in Springtime - in lovely fresh colours keeping indoors bright and airy. Lots of green plants in each room too :)

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 10/04/2019 16:08

We are in the middle of renovating and being able to choose everything ourselves and design the decor from scratch is lovely. I want the house to feel warm and cosy with lots of soft lights and warm colours. A house you can relax in and feel at ease is a happy house Smile

WetWetWithTears · 10/04/2019 16:20

Music makes my home happy - listening to it, playing it and decorating using lots of memorabilia from my favourite artists.

Punkatheart · 10/04/2019 17:36

We have a dog - a large husky and so currently it is a very happy home, if a little hairy. But I am doing an art course and already done some abstract paintings for the walls. Would love to do a portrait of the dog but not sure if it would end up as a dog's dinner!
