Home is a place many of us feel our most comfortable and happy, and making your house a place you feel like you can truly call home is personal and individual. Crown would like to hear your tips for making your home a happy place.

Here’s what Crown has to say: “We have exciting new paint shades to update your home this spring in our Breatheasy® matt and silk finish which is 99% solvent free and now certified asthma & allergy friendly® – a fresh look for your room and peace of mind for you, allowing you to create a healthier and happier home”

Have you added a splash of colour to your walls to brighten up your home? Perhaps you’ve filled your home with art that inspires you, or you have plants in every room to bring life to your surroundings?

All who post below what makes their home a happy place will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list), plus £100 worth of paint of their choice from crownpaints.co.uk.

Thanks and good luck

We have years of very rough times with DP being ill. I have worked really hard to make our home into a safe, comfortable place to live because we all needed that feeling of stability when everything felt chaotic. I think we have succeeded because people who visit often say how much they like our home. I can’t put my finger on a single thing that has made it that way but whatever we have done, I am pleased and proud it makes people feel safe and welcome.

Decorating in warm, 'friendly' colours, and having lots of books!!

For me a happy home starts with being organised, a place for everything, and having what we need as individuals. That might be a cosy space, a playroom floor, a private office, a sociable kitchen. I like decor to be a support to our home, not the main focus of it. Our house is for living in not showing off. That's what makes ours a happy space.

A happy home is how you want it to be no matter what the current trends are or whatever other people think!

A lived in home where everyone is comfortable

Each of my rooms has a coloured 'feature wall' and the remaining 3 a more subdued colour - with paintings and mirrors on these walls. My friends love my colours, and love my colour choice. The beauty of doing this is you can change your feature wall with a 'one coat' colour. I've not tried the Breatheasy® matt and silk finish but will certainly be looking out for it in my DIY store. Thanks

We have a sign over the door that you see as you come in the house that says 'Be Nice or Leave' and we apply that standard to everything that comes through the door!

Respect for each other's needs is my priority for a harmonious and happy home.

DS1 likes silence, DS2 loud games on the PlayStation. So we built a little playroom/ shed as far as possible from DS1's room and DS2 uses headphones.

DD and DS1 also generally use headphones. Makes for a happy lounge all together as a family but enjoying our own viewing.

Managing clutter - I want space for peace as well as playing in our house. I am also loving my new navy walls in my lounge 😂

PomDeNlume · 15/04/2019 18:03

I love adding bold coloured pieces to our neutral rooms to add a bit of personality - but would love to paint our bedroom a lovely dark blue!

Cats. Lots and lots of cats.

lolly2010 · 15/04/2019 23:04

Warm colours, pictures of my family on the warms and and lovely bright pieces of art.

FuckeryCentral · 16/04/2019 00:11

Light walls, bright pieces of soft furnishings in living room, photos of my baby dotted and my favourite mojito sented candle lit. Our home is about us as a family, love and coziness.

boptanana · 16/04/2019 00:32

Lots of family photos, evidence that the kids live here in every room and a lived in feel!

1moreRep · 16/04/2019 07:16

what makes my house a happy place, is that it is exactly my style. i use a lot of colour and have upcycled lots of furniture and decorated throughout.

by pairing walls and having wooden flooring i am able to let the kids play freely, due to any mess being easy to clean up.

Our home is very relaxed. It’s filled with things we love, from family treasures, books and the children’s art to our 3 cats loafing on the stairs.

What makes it happy is there’s something of everyone in each room and we have blankets everywhere so there’s always room for a snuggle!

I'm on a fairly low income and can't afford to make expensive home purchases, but one way I can brighten up my home quickly and inexpensively is to redecorate and I do this fairly frequently.

Currently looking for a nice shade of demin blue to redecorate my bathroom and will be checking out the Crown range as my experience is it's excellent paint. I also don't have carpets but painted floors and rugs and again - it's easy to 'refresh' or change. if they start to get chipped or tatty I just give them a quick sand down and a couple of fresh coats.

I also love to upcycle old furniture using bits and bobs of leftover paint, stencilling and decoupage and I have some lovely unique pieces that I've created myself.

onecardshort · 16/04/2019 16:42

Things that give me pleasure, whether it's a sprawled out cat sunning itself, light bouncing off a prism or something that I had to buy because it amused me or appealed to me. The more personal the home the more homely in my opinion.

TweetleBeetlesBattle · 16/04/2019 18:23

It's about what makes you smile in your house. I love the sense of achievement that comes with thinking I did that when I've saved enough to fix a bit of the house up...the joy when I've decorated the childs bedroom how she wants it, brightened up a dull bit of the house with a jazzy colour, ignoring the size of the project...from a skirting board sticker to fixing all the squeaky floorboards and being able to put a carpet down. I love the buzz I get from my home as I see things and think that was me, I did that.

Zofloramummy · 16/04/2019 19:10

As a single mum on a low income what makes my home happy is having a calm clutter free environment to live in. I do all of my redecorating and I love how changing the colour can change the whole feel of a room.
I’ve always had period colours but recently redecorated one room in grey, mustard and beige. And I love it!

Richlyfruited · 16/04/2019 19:46

I think a balance between keeping the house tidy but 'lived in' creates a happy home. I hate clutter but don't want to live in a sterile environment where everyone is frightened to put a cup down!

I love painting the house and breathing new life into a room. I probably redecorate once every 3-4 years even if it's just painting a feature wall or changing the colour theme of a room.

pinkpushchairs · 16/04/2019 20:46

I love green, I think it feels so bright and fresh. Love it

Sammiejo12 · 16/04/2019 21:45

It's your safe place and sanctuary away from life stresses and pressures :)
