Mess! We can all drool over the glossy photo's in Homes & Gardens, etc. but a family home needs to feel relaxed enough for kids to feel able to express themselves. For us, that means not splashing out on uber expensive furniture that we would feel annoyed should it get a scratch -but having a kitchen table that DS and DD can do science experiments on without fear of repercussions!

jitterbugintomybrain · 05/04/2019 19:53

Lots of photos of happy times! Comfortable furniture that is child friendly. Buy things that make you smile.

torthecatlady · 05/04/2019 22:23

De-cluttering has brought a lot of happiness to our home. Still a long way to go. Lots of plants too for a splash of colour.

It's a work in progress.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 05/04/2019 22:32

Lots of colour - and toys! - in every room!
Make a home bright, vibrant & joyous!

EvilHerbivore · 05/04/2019 22:37

No white! I hate clinical looking houses and love a lot of colour! Love when people's personalities are reflected in a space

rachaelsit · 06/04/2019 06:35

I would like to say the children running around and all those cliches but actually what makes a happy home for me and impacts on the kids, is organisation and touches which show character and fun. A proper paint is well over due which would please me no end!

ifigoup · 06/04/2019 07:06

Warm colours. Cushions and rugs. Things that show who lives there: photos, family calendars, kids’ artwork on the fridge. Plenty of books. Orchids. Nice smells. The sound of the washing machine.

I hadn't had new curtains in 13 years, and none at all on the patio doors for around 2 years, so recently bought new floral ones to replace the block colour ones. It makes me so happy to look at them and they really brighten up the room compared to the old ones.

I am painting the bathroom too , in colour this time instead of an off white . It cheers me up to see colour here and there. We also use cushions and warm blankets on the sofa to be comfy and warm at night.

I am also trying to declutter now that DC is growing up, so getting rid of lots of books and toys and ornaments etc. Still have a lot of objects around, but it looks better

Asuwere · 06/04/2019 19:26

I think it's the people that make the home happy rather than the decor, but for everyone to enjoy the decor, everyone should be involved in choosing it.

Shocksandboooos · 06/04/2019 19:29

Oh I like those first two shades a lot.

Lots of storage makes me happy and having a place for everything. Half way through the day my whole living room looks like there’s been a catastrophic explosion in a toy factory but it all has a place for tidy up time.
It means ds can play and make a mess without me worrying and I can still relax in a nice, cosy living room after his bed time.

Pushpull · 06/04/2019 19:33

House plants are a late revelation for me. They make such a difference and needn't be expensive.
Overall as I've gotten older in more confident in just getting things I like rather than replicating things I've seen elsewhere. So my home makes me happy because most of the things in it do.
The other thing I pay lots of attention to is paint shades. I'll happily buy 10 to 15 tester pots to get the right shade. Its tedious but pays off.

Have a couple of walls that the kids can put their pictures and odds & ends on, painted in a quality brightly coloured silk emulsion that still doesn't look too bad when pictures are taken off the wall.

user1496959500 · 07/04/2019 06:37

less stuff so more space to be together and create memories!

Heulog · 07/04/2019 06:54

For me, my house is made a home when there is nature/outside brought into the inside. For example, a pebble sculpture, some driftwood and some seashells decorate my dining room, and a branch full of fairy lights cosies up my living room. Flowers (sometimes a simple teacup full of dandelions that ds has picked from the garden) in the kitchen etc etc....

jacqui5366 · 07/04/2019 08:39

I love colour in my home and have a beautiful rainbow in my nursery, clouds on the ceiling and green walls with stickers which I will change periodically, at the moment I have numbers climbing up the rainbow.

Montydoo · 07/04/2019 09:11

All of my walls are emulshioned, and love the wipe clean, as it removes fingerprints (a tip from Mrs.Hitch is to clean walls with a dilute fabric conditioner - which works). I have flawless fawn in the DS 1 bedroom as it looks like a summer meadow, and I have football inspired stickers over the walls. My living room has a crown metallic emulsion 'dazzle' it dries quickly. I love the fact that having painted walls are cheaper than wallpaper, quicker to put on, and you can change the colour scheme when you want - a one coat does the trick nicely.

NeverTwerkNaked · 07/04/2019 09:14

Pictures on the walls! For me, it’s a mixture of pictures of family and other pictures (photos/ artwork). I don’t personally like the “wall art” type stuff but really it’s about choosing whatever pictures will make you happy

munchbunch12 · 07/04/2019 15:08

Lots of storage, and calming neutral colours that don't show up the finger marks!

Flapdoodles · 07/04/2019 18:37

Firstly I would say the people in it make it a happy place but also having a change round of furniture/ adding a splash of colour by painting a room/ some new accessories also make for happy place.

Batsypatsy · 07/04/2019 21:26

We have lots of art on the walls. I love plants, but have to be careful because my cats eat them. I also have fairy lights in every room and scented candles.

GrumpySprout · 07/04/2019 22:46

I love to have themes in each room. For example:

-A cosy snug, painted in deep blues with dark woods and low mood lighting.
-A bright and airy kitchen, the life of the house with large windows and light neutral shades.
-A relaxing bedroom, again neutral tones but with pops of colour to accent the room.

Each room should make you feel something and portray a certain ambience.

ShowerOfShite · 08/04/2019 04:46

I love to feel cosy so I fill our house with soft cushions and blankets and we have the biggest, comfiest sofas we can all lounge on.

Bumblebeans · 08/04/2019 05:48

Photos and pictures that we love, and plants make a happy home

claza93 · 08/04/2019 06:46

Plenty of photos and natural light! With five children and a dog the house is never completely clean and tidy but I do try at the end of the day to keep on top of the TV room so we can sit down in a calm room. That makes me happy!
Our house is always lively and welcoming and everyone loves to come round to us :)

lovemyflipflops · 08/04/2019 10:05

I've just finished painting my hallway with the easy clean matt emulsion, it's great to have a pretty colour, and so easy to clean of the finger prints after a day playing out in the garden, with a roller it went on in next to no time. I have a large mirror, and fairy lights winding around the bannister for a magical look.
I use colours in each of my children's bedrooms, it's quick to do, easy to maintain, clean and touch up.
In my dining room I have gentle olive and again have lots of outdoor pictures of my children - the green grass and blue sky really looks lovely at mealtimes, and with the daisy stickers around the lower part of the wall, it looks so 'alfresco'.
