Home is a place many of us feel our most comfortable and happy, and making your house a place you feel like you can truly call home is personal and individual. Crown would like to hear your tips for making your home a happy place.

Here’s what Crown has to say: “We have exciting new paint shades to update your home this spring in our Breatheasy® matt and silk finish which is 99% solvent free and now certified asthma & allergy friendly® – a fresh look for your room and peace of mind for you, allowing you to create a healthier and happier home”

Have you added a splash of colour to your walls to brighten up your home? Perhaps you’ve filled your home with art that inspires you, or you have plants in every room to bring life to your surroundings?

All who post below what makes their home a happy place will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list), plus £100 worth of paint of their choice from crownpaints.co.uk.

Thanks and good luck

Everyone gets to choose the colours on their walls, ensuring that their space is perfect for them. This means that my son’s is powder blue with a copper metallic accent wall but he’s a happy chap and that’s priceless.

Holidays and lengthy family time together see us having a family ‘hour of tidy’ regularly. Everyone starts with their room/space and then look for things to do for the remainder of the hour. Means that everyone has a stake in keeping their living environment in a decent state.

Still looks like a tip occasionally but it’s a happy tip!

My toddler and two spaniels playing together and running riot. It wouldn't be a home without them!

Ribeebie · 04/04/2019 12:50

I like having a wall of colour in a room. We have a nice pale purple on our living room wall. Thick curtains and nice snuggly throws make it seem cosy. I like the house tidy but it has to be lived in and it's lovely to see my baby playing with all his toys on the carpet!

Make sure it's not a sterile blank canvas and has a heart, with lots of artefacts etc...that reflect the family within. We've got lots of colourful, creative stuff framed which we've done ourselves, including works of art by the DC.

SillyMoomin · 04/04/2019 14:51

I have things that make me happy. Bright coloured walls, interesting artefacts from abroad that overtime I see them, make me smile and remember an event.

May not be a show home, but it is MY home and I love it

What makes my home a happy place is upcyclying my wooden furniture like my coffee table, kitchen chairs and TV stand. Giving them a little overhaul makes them look (and feel!) brand new and doesn't cost the earth either!

MakeTeaNotWar · 04/04/2019 16:13

A happy home is one that is warm and welcoming, bright and cheerful. Oh and lots of cushions and bean bags to flop about on!

MooPointCowsOpinion · 04/04/2019 17:30

We have just moved into a big, new house, and I love it but I was struggling with making it feel homey and comforting and warm. I realised it was the slight echo, and prioritised soft furnishings and pictures on the walls to reduce that.
I also have learnt a lot about adding texture, as well as colour, and sometimes a more gentle way to make a space inviting is not to add too many colours but different textures instead.

Feeling cozy and relaxed. I’m not a fan of neutrals and greys I like dark cozy colours. I like a home to feel lived in and not like a show home

queenoftheschoolrun · 04/04/2019 19:06

Family and nature make me happy so:
Family photos and interesting artwork - posters from exhibitions we've seen, DD's artwork, paintings we have bought on family holidays etc. Also houseplants and flowers, from the garden if possible. Currently have a vase with cherry blossom and another with my Mothers Day bunch of daffodils.

CallmeBadJanet · 04/04/2019 19:09

Simple decor, lots of textiles with prints, a mixture of new and old decorative pieces, and original artwork by people who live there, whatever their age. Canvases are cheap so every now and then we all have a go at creating something whatever our skill or ability!

gemmie797 · 04/04/2019 19:12

A happy home for me means plenty of color and different textures plus a safe environment for my sons to play in

CMOTDibbler · 04/04/2019 19:45

I like cosy and comfortable. It'll never be a showhome, but its somewhere that we (and the dogs and cats) can relax

OrdinarySnowflake · 04/04/2019 19:53

Storage! Having places to put things helps make a home feel better.

CopperPan · 04/04/2019 20:07

We have lots of family photos, and the dc's best artworks (they go to an art club so not just doodles). Having a place for everything, and for everyone to have their own space, works for us. Each of us has our own section on the bookshelves in the living room, where we put our choice of books/ornaments, and we each have our own coat hooks and bag/shoe box as well.

quizqueen · 04/04/2019 21:39

A happy home is one with pets who are seen as important family members and treated with respect.

Anj123 · 04/04/2019 22:06

I like to have my things around me, my house definitely has the “lived in” look! If I tidy up too much I can’t find anything! 😂

ItsHardToExplain · 04/04/2019 22:16

I buy old furniture and paint it. It’s better for the environment, it saves money and it looks better than modern furniture.
If I get bored I buy a new tin of paint and do it again.
It makes me happy.

kateandme · 04/04/2019 22:46

Fresh air, light and colour.

TheWashingMachine · 05/04/2019 03:16

Also not too much stuff. DH needs to stop buying extra dining room chairs

daisy913 · 05/04/2019 08:22

Our house is a happy house, because we don't stress too much, yes I clean daily if not more than once a day, but if the kids want to make cakes we do, if they have EVERY toy out of their boxes then so be it, and we also have photos and canvases, which we do need to update soon now we have our 3rd child Smile xx

Withington · 05/04/2019 08:47

Using our Windows and glass doors on the kitchen extension for her to do her painting on - she loves it (thinks shes being naughty and can't stop laughing) and you can wash off both the windows and the pvc covers. Makes us all happy!

libra101 · 05/04/2019 11:17

The old saying 'home is where the heart is' is true!
I like a neat, clean minimalist look, some walls painted, with a 'statement' wall to contrast with the paint.
Leafy houseplants add interest, and fragrant candles permeating the air can be calming.
Big squashy armchairs are great for relaxing, reading, and watching TV. Plenty of storage to keep the clutter down, makes a happy home for me.

Milkn0sugar · 05/04/2019 17:29

Big comfy sofas and mood lighting are a must for us as well as deep pile carpets in the comfort rooms like the living room and all of upstairs. While the house doesn't always have to be tidy - particularly in the kids' areas - it does have to be clean or it grates on me very quickly. Also feather-down duvets and pillows all the way.
