NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We were going to take a picnic to Crystal Palace Park and whilst we were on the train it started pouring rain and the kids were gutted because they wanted to see the dinosaurs.

When we got to Crystal Palace we decided to still go to the park but that the picnic would be impossible so we went and sat on the floor in the little shelter on the platform, and had our picnic in there.

As people were coming off the trains they were staring at us obviously thinking we were mad with out spread on the blankets in that weather, but the kids look back on it with fondness!

We planned a picnic to watch the solar eclipse but the weather turned and we ended up eating under an umbrella but the kids loved it

We were on holiday in North Wales. We went out one morning and as we arrived at our destination the weather started to change. Before too long the rain was coming down and we found ourselves on a beach. ON the beach were dozens and dozens of surfers and it turned out we had stumbled upon a surfing competition. To make things even more exciting, we sought out shelter in a cave, where we stayed and watched the surfers (and ate chips)

AnimalAddict · 16/02/2019 00:48

Having snowball fights and sledding as a kid! :)

RuthEg · 16/02/2019 01:03

We were at the beach, when we felt raindrops falling. The kids loved putting together a makeshift shelter out of the surf boards, body boards, spades, side of the sandcastle and the beach rug. By the time they had finished the shelter, the rain had stopped! Now, it’s become a favourite game at the beach even if it doesn’t rain.

On Holiday in spain we decided to go on a glass bottom boat so as we could see the amazing marine life

.The weather was good when we boarded and started out on a lovely sailing trip.We thought it was to last 15 minutes but a huge storm hit and it got to bad on the boat.It was like being on a rollercoaster and would rise up with the huge waves then just go crashing down time and time again. It was really scary as it wasn't a big boat either.

Many of the passangers were sea sick and we were still out there 30 minutes later.Eventually we got back to the docks safely but it was a terrible trip

.We didn't see any fish or marine life either. Never again did we go on one of those boats.

Husband determined to have a picnic in the forest, with new portable picnic table he'd bought(why would anyone want one of those?) and heavens opened, so kids and I ate in car, whilst he sat at table on own and ate - kids still lauagh about it 10 years later

We used to have a family tradition very Christmas of going out for a picnic lunch no matter what the weather. Once it was bitterly cold and snowing but it made it all the more memorable. We huddled around a picnic table and lit candles for warmth and would make a makeshift sledge to play on afterwards. So much more special to look back on than just having the regular roast dinner at home

Last year when it snowed, it come very quickly and covered my area enough to cause bad driving conditions and limited access anywhere. The kids and I went into our front garden to attempt to make Olf we did a pretty good job! Then my hubby decided to join in to after telling us it was too cold to be out there.

Our car broke down in the middle of a terrific rain storm but instead of just waiting in the car for help we made it into an adventure and walked into the nearest town , they had great fun as we stopped off at a local coffee shop and they were treated to some lovely cakes by the owners who took pity on us, it must have been because we looked a right mess as we were completely soaked by this point.

mollymoo818 · 16/02/2019 08:29

I don't think bad weather needs to stop a day out becoming an adventure. As long as it isn't too cold a summer storm can be fun and happens to us a lot whilst camping or out walking (the joys of being British) I now always make sure when we go out walking or camping we have our wellies on so it makes it a fun experience to jump about in puddles and shelter under trees if it gets too heavy.

Chelbo123 · 16/02/2019 08:47

A few years ago we had really bad snow. It was the school holidays and it was our turn to feed the animals at school (pigs, goats and chickens). I pulled my daughter down on a sledge, and we rolled the snow into large balls for the goats to jump on!

Fond memories of being on the beach at Weymouth, rain pouring & an exciting storm started. We sheltered in a beach hut wrapped in towels to watch it all across the sea

vonniebab2 · 16/02/2019 08:58

Once when we was camping the rain flooded the campsite we had to dig trenches around the tent eventually we gave up booked a hotel a warm room hot meal glass of wine happy days!

FireflyGirl · 16/02/2019 09:26

The main one I remember is when I was younger. We were staying in a lodge in a forest. We'd been horseriding and the weather turned quite bad so they brought us back. My sister and I decided to jump in the puddles. I managed to find one of those off the cartoons, where it looked fine but was actually about 2 foot deep. Cue my mum sticking me fully dressed in the shower...

hiddenmichelle · 16/02/2019 09:52

Went out for a walk in the park and playground and the heavens opened and there was a huge thunderstorm. We sheltered for a bit under a tree and when it died down a little decided to make a run for it. My two year old found a massive puddle on the way throughthe park on the paved area and began splashing. Before I knew it he was sitting in it and my 3 year old then proceeded to do the same. At this point I just let them sit there and splash until they were ready to go home for a bath! People were walking past and laughing so much!

AR2012 · 16/02/2019 10:00

we tend not to go out in a downpour as they may catch a cold but once that's over wellies and puddle jumping is fine.

ThemisA · 16/02/2019 10:44

We went to stay with my brother and family hoping to have days out walking, climbing trees etc but the weather was awful and everyone was getting irritable with cabin fever. I had wanted a tent for summer so we went out together, chose a tent, waited for the weather to ease a bit before collectively putting the tent up. The kids loved playing in the tent, eating lunch in there etc. It was pretty dirty for anew tent but worth it for the fun we all had.

I once ran away to a B&B in Scotland as things were falling apart at home. A wonderful man tracked me down and drove hundreds of miles to comfort me. As he arrived it started snowing in the street and we kissed under a streetlight. An older lady walking past said "oh I wish somebody would kiss me like that".

dadshere · 16/02/2019 11:01

We went out to play on the beach on holiday and ended up sheltering under some trees when the weather turned foul. One of the little girls playing with my daughter had her mum there, and she invited everyone into her house for a playdate! We had a great time!

October half term last year, we went to our local nature reserve, where there is a footpath around a large reservoir. We set off with good intentions. The heavens opened, and I heard rumbles in the distance - was not sure if they were heading our way or not. We found a bird hide made of wood, it was quite new and still had the new wood smell. We felt pretty safe in here, so we took it in turns to peep into the reed beds at one side and the gravel area before the reservoir started. On the wall of the hide were birds you can expect to see there at this time of the year - so that's exactly what we did for 40 minutes. We walked the rest of the way around talking about what we'd seen, and breathing in the 'after storm' smell in the air. Fabulous but unplanned day !

malicem · 16/02/2019 11:39

My daughter loves the rain, sometimes our day in becomes a day out because of the bad weather! We love to get suited and booted in our watproofs and got for a splashy soggy walk - the rainier the better!

lillypopdaisyduke · 16/02/2019 11:47

We were supposed to have a day at the Lido an hours drive one day last September. But as the heatwave had just ended, we were disappointed that it was a chilly windy day. 'Mummy can we go for a drive' the love to look out of the window. They saw a windfarm on the horizon and were amazed at the huge structures - 'mummy can we go there ? ' so off I headed. There was a visitors car park, with diagrams as to how the windfarm worked, and the benefits for the community, what is underground, and really promoted green energy. We spend a couple of hours here, reading listening, and walking along the public footpath along the perimeter of the windfarm field. We ALL learned so much that day.

We had planned to go to the races at Ascot (my DD is horse mad) but the weather was so awful we went to the indoor ski slope in Bracknell instead! Huge fun and bragging rights!!!!

Scoleah · 16/02/2019 12:15

we went on a Last minute Holiday (sorry not a day out) but we had a Severe storm & Mini hurricane that wiped out the electric on half of the island.
We slept in Darkness, had to use our torches for Light, and ration our food as the shops had closed for the season!
We then got evacuated with 45mins notice to the other side of the island (spread over 3 days)
Very exciting for the kids, very stressful for us, but we made the most of it, was kind of nice going back to basics, especially as everyone was affected, no power meant people had to actually look up and talk to each other!
Wouldn't want to deal with the stress again though!
