NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We decided to take a picnic to the nature reserve, have a walk around the lake and let the boys burn off some energy.
All went well with the picnic then it was time for the walk around the lake and some bird spotting from the hide.
We got a quarter of the way round the lake when it started to rain, then hail on us.
We took shelter under the trees but the ground, already boggy became very slippery.
The boys, all 3 of them had lots of energy after their lunch and insisted on chasing each other, wading in mud to get their wellies stuck and going down to the waters edge.
Following lots of warnings not to slip over and to be careful, two of the boys fell over in the mud, they were coated !
Uncle who went to help them up got his welly stuck in the mud, it came off and he fell over too.
All in all it was very funny but the downside for the boys was that they had to go home in the car in their underwear covered with a blanket. The upside was that we all still had fun despite the weather and the mud.

Me and my two kids went to Butlins last year whilst on the beach it started raining so being silly we was running in and out of the sea dipping our toes whilst being saturated, it then stopped raining and was hot again it was so much fun, it was only after I realised how stupid it was as it could of thundered and lightning given how humid it was Shock

We booked a cheap weekend in Wales on a camping site with various lake water sports included, a climbing wall etc. It ended up storming heavily through the entire holiday - our tents were quite large, pre-erected tents on a concrete base, but overnight I was seriously worried the tent would blow away! We couldn't do any of the activities that were planned due to the weather, so we ended up huddled in our tent playing various board games and messing around with torches. It was quite fun in the end, but it has put me off camping holidays in the future!

out for a walk and woosh the rains came.farmyard paths were our mapped track so it was keep going or sit stuck.
at first we doged the mud.which we found actually perpetuated the misery and made it worse being so focused on it and what it might do to us! haha so instead it was who could step in the most and get the most dirty.it was agreed we would strip and ditch the clothes at the other end therefore we just went for it.im sure we get less muddy with not caring so much but it was so much fun just sploging through.

On a Birthday trip to theme park for myself, husband and 3 kids and the rain started on the journey there. Driving conditions were so bad that our 2 hour journey took 3 and a half! When we arrived the downpour intensified so we dived straight into the nearest place to eat. This turned out to be a fantastically fun vegan fast food outlet - my vegetarian children loved being able to choose anything from the menu for a change and we would have missed it if the weather hadn’t been so bad. While we were eating the sun came out and we spent the rest of the day walking straight onto the queue-free rides because everyone else had obviously given up during the first couple of hours rain!
To make our adventure complete we were lucky enough to get a complimentary return visit this year as they have a rainy day guarantee!
A bit of a change from the many outdoor adventure we’ve had in soggy woods and Arctic-cold January playgrounds but a fun one nonetheless!

walks around the park when it starts raining become very wet and muddy days out!

Treaclespongeandcustard · 12/02/2019 22:47

We went to the English seaside to have fish and chips. We set our things up, erected the sunshade and then the heavens opened. Our children were tiny (1&3) and we spent hours huddled in a little half tent singing songs and eating fish and chips. It was fun and I’ll always remember it.

Fanjango · 12/02/2019 23:37

Hahaha. Sorry. Can't help but laugh. Try having an asd/gad child and see how a windy and wet day can be positive 😆😆😆. The only bonus of those days is an excuse not to leave the house.

It had been raining for days and I got a phone call to say the children's school was shutting at lunchtime due to a rapidly flooding car park. My kids were delighted when I arrived to collect them, but even more delighted when we walked around the corner of our road to discover traffic cones and a closed road sign because it had completely flooded due to leaves blocking drains and such persistent heavy rainfall! I was worried because neighbours were bailing our their cars and water was rising up our garden path, but the kids just jumped into the water and started paddling about, soon they were lying down in it! Thankfully it didn't get any higher and they played all aftenoon...it is still referred to as the best day ever!

Planned a day at a theme park while we had lovely weather last year, woke up and the heavens had opened Sad BUT we don't believe in the wrong weather, just the right clothes Smile so we still went and it was fantastic because there was hardly anyone there so we could use whatever ride we wanted and even stay on and ride again.

Weather definitely didn't spoil it, it actually improved our day!

Last year in the very deep snow we decided to nip to the shop for some extra supplies. We took the sledge to carry the shopping and the kids loved it. On the way home we bumped into the neighbours and made a huge snowman, another neighbour came out with a flask of hot chocolate and we ate the biscuits we bought. After a whole we decided mulled cider would be a smart move and lots of the neighbours joined in. We properly spoke to people we'd previously only been on nodding terms with and it was lovely.

GenericHamster · 13/02/2019 10:43

I didn't know it was fun to run in the rain until we were on a day out and my four year old ran ahead of me in the rain, holding my hand and screaming with joy.

Trumponerous · 13/02/2019 11:50

Not to be recommended but we were young and ignorant when my DH and I were caught swimming in a huge tropical downpour with lightening, at night. So exhilarating.

foxessocks · 13/02/2019 13:07

A picnic in the rain in a country park near the seaside. We'd climbed to the top of a nice scenic walkway and the kids were looking forward to the picnic then the heavens opened! So we just did it anyway which the children thought was funny (me, not so much) then we walked back down and had hot chocolate to warm up in the cafe!

asuwere · 13/02/2019 14:34

We had plans to go to a local country park at Easter a few years ago as they had a special trail/treasure hunt set up. There was a big snowstorm that weekend! We decided to get wrapped up and go anyway - it was really quiet and we had to dig in the snow to find some of the treasure but was so much fun. The playpark was abadoned and we discovered that those tube slides are more fun when you come out into snow! Kids still ask for snow at Easter!

jacqui5366 · 13/02/2019 16:50

My fondest memory of being out in a snap thunderstorm with my 2 DS, it had been a dry warm summer up until that point, and the grass was no longer green - the heavens opened and we had a downpour which lasted around 10 minutes - the air smelled different - you could see the look on my two DS faces - 'the air is just like happy fairies and growing grass' I admit it was a wonderful smell.

MargoLovebutter · 13/02/2019 16:53

The DC and I had the most fantastic day out at a water park one winter when it had snowed. Not enough snow for fun but enough to make everyone nervous about being out & about. We went to the water park and it was just us and about 20 other people! It was magical and we had so much fun. We must have gone on the slides that you usually have to queue forever for about 50 times! I'm sure the water park people must have been really down on revenue for the day, but it was certainly a day me and my two will never forget.

daniel1996 · 13/02/2019 17:15

My DS and DS loved how our scorched grass after the blistering summer last year and how it gradually turned green again after the heatwave broke and the grass turned green again. We had planted a huge amount of summer flowering bulbs which never even sprouted - so we all googled the answer. So watering cans all round and more interest in the garden has taken over. They take so much more notice of the daffodils which are currently sprouting.

lovemyflipflops · 13/02/2019 17:38

I vividly remember one October half term, my DS and DD were just not getting along, and I was feeling what to do with them. So coats on and we went for a walk in the woods, it was foggy, but I needed to get us all out of the house for fresh air and out of the house.
What am afternoon we had ! the fog had clung with the huge spiders web making them look magnificent, and with pockets full of acorns and conkers, and delight at the sights, smells of the foggy woods, and our treasures. We still speak about that magical day. After half term my DS won a prize for a drawing,... a huge cobweb in a tree (with a smiley faced spider at one corner).

sarat1 · 13/02/2019 19:09

We've chosen one of the coldest days of the year to head out to the country park, knowing that it would be relatively deserted and pretty with frost.

qate · 13/02/2019 20:11

We got married by the Scottish coast a few years ago at a time when storms had led to widespread flooding throughout Scotland... the roads to the venue were blocked so our photographer couldn't make it until just before the ceremony started, my parents and grandparents got kicked out of their hotel two hours before the wedding as it had flooded, and we spent more time running around coordinating alternative arrangements than we did getting ready for the wedding. To this day, we still laugh about it (who plans a wedding on the Scottish coast in winter?!), and the photos outside in the wind and rain are some of the nicest we have!

Bebe03 · 13/02/2019 20:18

We once got stuck on a bike ride in flash floods- knee high!
We thought about getting a taxi but then embraced it, pushed through the floods and laughed all the way home!!

KittyKat88 · 13/02/2019 23:55

Sometimes a rainy day can provide the best opportunities for outside fun! I've loved beach walks in the rain like when we were holidaying in Edinburgh and headed out to Portobello beach. The sky was moody and amazing! Wet weather doesn't really hold my girls back and they happily explored the beach. We also went to visit a nearby adventure park, and despite the rain my girls played on all the swings, slides and everything else - so they got wet bums, they didn't care. I'd packed spare clothing so they could enjoy their carefree play!

I am lucky enough to have a large garden, with a shed and greenhouse, and small allotment, so my DS1 and 2 have their own peapod area where they grow greenpeas, so they have a good understanding of nature. However when we came home early from a day out because of bad weather, I had forgotten my housekeys. We took refuge in the greenhouse, closed the door, and unpacked our half eaten picnic. From a disaster we turned it into a memorable time, listening to thunder, asking questions about what was going on in the sky, and me trying to answer them. We saw a variety of insects which also had a home in my greenhouse, earwigs, spiders in the corners, and dragonfly lava in my waterbuts at the side. They now have a better understanding of nature, and I keep a spare house key in there hidden (just in case)

we were on holiday one year for my son's birthday in August, we took a day trip to a fairly remote beach , it was so hot that the kids were just in underwear and then the heavens opened on a biblical scale! we managed to find some giant leaves to use as cover, but we were pretty much totally drenched. We had to slop into a surfers cafe where they gave us towels and cake and we dried our clothes under a hand dryer, my son thinks it was an awesome birthday!!
