NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

We were staying in a caravan park and had a lovely day playing god old fashioned board games and drinking hot chocolate as the rain was beating down on the roof.

We also has a lovely walk in Wales last year when it was raining very heavily - we came back soaked and muddy but we still enjoyed it.

torthecatlady · 14/02/2019 12:55

Everyone knows wet weather is the best weather to feed the ducks! We put our wellies on and take a walk to our local river with a couple of handfuls of seeds Smile

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/02/2019 13:35

We always say there's no such thing as bad weather only inappropriate clothing. Having kids and a dog means we go out in all weathers and always have fun are there nothing beats coming back in from the cold and having a nice hot chocolate in the warm.

When we were on holiday we got caught in a massive downpour the kids really wanted to go to the beach so we donned full water proofs and headed down to a really pebbley beach where we sat for hours in the rain building towers from rocks and pebbles. We wouldn't have done it if it had been a nice day, but its one of the days we think back fondly to, it was such good fun

A young ds (about 4 maybe), a rotund me and a tall dh all crammed into a toddler sized sun tent on the beach because it had started raining. We had a couple of bags in there with us too. DHs legs were sticking out of the door and every time ds moved- which was a lot - we all had to move. We ended up laughing so much that I'm sure any one passing would have wondered what on earth was happening!!

If we have to go out then we go out, whatever the weather. Waterproofs or warm clothes or whatever. It goes on. If we don't have to go out we do sometimes enjoy going to the park in the rain. Especially if it's holidays and we've not been out as much. Make it into an outing in itself! Splash in all the puddles, get muddy and make it worth our while and then stop at the shop for a pocket money treat and a hot chocolate at home to warm up. When the baby is older it'll be more enjoyable for me not having to dry a dripping buggy out in our living room.

Racing across London on THE rainiest day ever to make it to our time slot for the shard was certainly an adventure - it felt like we ice skated across the millenium bridge because it was soooo wet. Then when we arrived at the shard (just in time!) we all felt like drowned rats but it has made it one of our most memorable experiences in London purely because of how wet it was. The kids still talk about the day they slid across the bridge!

WholeL0ttaRosie · 14/02/2019 18:09

When walking in Scotland, a fairly longish hike through stunning countryside when, you guessed it, the heavens opened and it poured down. Feeling like drowned rats we carried on, trudging across fields, and then spotted a small building which turned out to be a 'bothy'.
I think I've watched too many horror films because I found it too creepy to be comfortable, it had weird writing on the walls and old, rusty tools on the floor. It was a toss-up between staying in there and trying to get dry, but feeling on edge the whole time Shock Blush, or back out in the miserable weather.
Never been so pleased to finish a walk.

A couple of years ago we were in a ski resort in the summer and decided to go up the mountain. It was beautifully warm at the bottom and we were wearing summer clothes. We got onto the chairlift (basically two seats suspended in the air) and about half way up we realised our horrible mistake, it was frozen and started to pour. The man at the top gave us coffee and we got warmed up in his hut though and then he gave us bin bags to wear on the way down. The kids loved it.

del2929 · 15/02/2019 00:32

gosh i wish i was a bit more adventurous- i dont enjoy the rain- it makes me miserable- the one time it started pouring down i was with my DC who was in her pram- we both got soaked.

My daughter won a trip to take the family to London and ride the speedboat on the Thames, sounded fab, however, I woke up with a huge migraine, and when we got there, my youngest decided she really didn't want to go on the boat, so, it was decided my husband would take our three older children, while I took our youngest Charlie round the shops.

My head banging, I thought, At least I can try to give a fun day to our littlest. but then the Heavens opened, it was pouring down so hard that you could barely see in front of you.
I grabbed my little girls hand and we ran into the nearest open door, and found ourselves in an arcade.
We had two hours to kill, so, we played the arcades, walked in the rain some more to find the toilets, bought an icecream and watched it melt in the rain, I tripped over an old mans brolly, and then I realised we had lost my daughters backpack, so we had to walk everywhere until luckily, we found it near where we had eaten our icecream!

It wasn't the perfect day we imagined, but the kids had their boat ride, husband had a great time, and me and the little one realised that not every perfect day, has to be perfect!

We nearly didn't go to a wildlings playgroup recently on an icy cold windy day but ended up having a fabulous adventure getting warm near a campfire and with the wind rocking our hammock

DH and I broke down on the side of the motorway driving up north. The safest place to wait for a rescue vehicle was the field next to the roadside. It had been snowing all day and expecting to be in a warm car for a good few hours we weren't exactly equipped to be hanging out in 4 inches of snow with more falling as we waited. The rescue man wasn't particularly happy with us being wet and muddy as we clambered into his van...

StickChildNumberTwo · 15/02/2019 22:17

Big outdoor gig in the pouring rain was fun. Not so much the having to push cars out of a muddy field at the end - we got out, lots of people ended up sleeping in their cars and waiting for a tractor to come and pull them out in the morning.

gd2011 · 15/02/2019 22:36

Getting caught out by fog on the moors certainly turned our walk into an adventure and a navigational challenge.

maryandbuzz1 · 15/02/2019 22:39

We had a lovely afternoon a couple of years ago when everyone was bored and the weather was terrible. We dressed in coats and wellies and went outside to make mud pies. We stirred the mixtures which contained bits of leaves and flowers with sticks and moulded them into patties!

prwilson · 15/02/2019 22:42

When I was young my parents took me to the cinema in the centre of town, but the rain was so bad that there were literally rivers of water running down the middle of the street. I had to take off my shoes and socks off during the film so they might dry by end.

xxgeexx · 15/02/2019 22:47

We went on holiday and were playing out around the caravan and the heavens opened the boys though the swirls in the clouds were amazing the stormy big grey ones x

disdream84 · 15/02/2019 22:51

We were caught in a flash flood on the way home from a day trip in the summer. There was a pretty severe thunderstorm followed by a torrential downpour with hailstones (in July!) and out of nowhere a river started running down through a field and on to the main road heading straight for us! It was pretty scary however we managed to move over to the highest point at the end of the road where we sat it out until the water subsided. When it calmed down a bit we then had to follow a police 4x4 out of the water which the kids thought was amazing as they had their blue lights on!

Ganne1 · 15/02/2019 22:55

What else but snow! At the weekend! We live on a hill, so it's sleds and anything suitable you can get your hands one and off down the slopes. Who needs Mayrhofen?

freefan · 15/02/2019 23:00

We were out on a picnic when the skies just opened.. all dressed in summer clothing and it came on so sudden but the kids all decided they were in the 'rainforest' and started climbing the trees to be sheltered and the day turned into the best picnic that they still talk about 2 years later. All the way home they jumped and splashed in the puddles.

glennamy · 15/02/2019 23:05

Was holidaying in Cornwall/Devon and during bad weather a crash had shut a road, so now not knowing where we were we got lost and we came across a children's farm we had not known about. It was amazing, lots of fun, indoor stuff to do, reptile section, lots of small animals to play with, how a farm works etc as well as helping out. Made it one of the best days out we have ever had!

Blainalass · 15/02/2019 23:09

We'd gone off on a two night walking and camping trip in January (we were younger and even more foolhardy then). The weather turned a lot colder. We called in on friends nearby. We turned down their offer of spending the second night with them but did accept the offer of bedding down in their bee hut. Even in winter a constant hum - strange but quite pleasant.

compy99 · 15/02/2019 23:16

Having got lost trying to find a small pet park, then taking ages to find somewhere to park we noticed the weather changing so as soon as we got in we decided to have our lovingly prepared picnic as soon as we found somewhere to sit and get it all out a torrential shower hit, we had wet sandwiches and soggy salad and we got soaked through. We were uncomfortable in our wet clothes and all the animals had much more sense than us an all went inside their dry areas so we couldn't see anything !

When I turned 30, I decided that I would like to have a meal at a restaurant in Edinburgh. My friend of 14 years now came to visit me and my family during this time. She bought with her; her two children. Anyhow on the day of the birthday meal, once we had all eaten we needed to get the bus home. As soon as we left what was glorious sunshine turned into a heavy down pour. Myself, my two children, my partner, my mom, my friend and her two children burst I to laughter and decided to take shelter briefly under a tree nearby. Realising that the rain wasn't shifting anytime soon, we all decided to make our way to the bus stop. Turns out the bus was a good twenty minutes away. While walking the kids were singing and jumping in the puddles. They were having the best time. My friend and I still talk about this to this day. It is one of the fondest memories we will share.
