NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

When the snow started last year, my bus was cancelled, so I went for the train, which kept showing up as delayed further and further. The waiting room was packed with people, blizzard blowing outside, but then people started chatting and it went from a silent room, to everyone speaking to each other and brightening the mood. A big cheer went up when we saw the train lights emerging through the falling snow in the distance. I was glad to get home that day!

Spent an hour travelling to an airshow, took forever to find a parking space and when we did it was a 20 minute walk to the seafront where the show was happening. Finally get there and the weather takes a turn and hardly anything is flying. Frustrating day from start to finish!

We had an amazing picnic in two cars in the pouring rain at a country show about 10 years ago. The kids were all little then and they thought it was amazing. We passed picnic items through the car windows to each other, which the kids found hysterically funny! Luckily we'd already been there about three hours when the rain started so although our time was cut a bit short we'd seen and done plenty by then. Then we drove back to Grandma's for cake and a nice hot cuppa, continuing the picnic theme by spreading the blankets on the conservatory floor for the kids to eat their cake on. They loved every minute and although even I'm hard pushed to remember any details of the actual show now, the picnic has stayed in all of our memories.

We had gone on a day trip to a beautiful beach in Wales and we were having a lovely time. However, the skies suddenly darkened and a storm blew in. Cue chasing flying deck chairs, mats and inflatables along the sand. Then we had to be towed off the 'drive on' beach by 4x4 and it had become boggy and the wheels were just spinning. If only we'd left an hour earlier!!

One of my most amazing childhood memories is of boating with my grandparents in a thunderstorm. We had moored for the night and sat out on deck watching lightning so constant that there were two or three bolts in the air almost constantly. It was absolutely breathtaking.

The boat got completely beached and it took ages for us to get off the sand the next morning, but it was totally worth it!

We will never forget our day in Disneyland Paris, mid July, and the most awful torrential rain I've ever known! It came down so hard and fast that my sons pushchair filled with water and we had to take him out to tip the water out! The kids thought it was hilarious we were all caught out in the rain!

Smellophant87 · 27/02/2019 12:40

When were younger my Mum forced us all out the house for a Sunday walk. At the furthest point from home, of course, the heavens opened and we all had to run home in the torrential rain! We were soaked through and freezing cold but we were all laughing.

Holidaying in Scotland, our plans for a picnic outgoors were scuppered by a heavy downpour. After a quick online search we found a leisure park within a half hour walk from the hotel. It included a Cinema, 10 pin bowling, restaurants, Pirate themed indoor crazy golf and a well known shopping superstore. As we didn't pack brollies and wellies, we all got on board the bus and had a great day trampolening, golfing, watching a film, bowling, and family meals. The rain was still pouring when it was time to go back to the hotel, so a visit to the big store for waterproofs, wellies and brollies and we walked back in the pouring rain happy as anything laughing and singing all the way.

Aw i remember many times growing up being caught up in heavy rain. Used to love the spontaneous dances in the rain! it isn't as comfortable as it looks on telly, but it sure is fun! :)

Dessallara · 27/02/2019 20:54

Last summer it started pouring down unexpectedly on the way to school with my 2 year old. Luckily she always wears wellies! She was so happy to see puddles appear and jump in all of them :)

A trip to a caravan when the beast from the east hit made some of my favourite memories. The park was empty so we all ran around with the dogs, built snowmen and went on lovely winter walks. NOTHING at all was open but we just took lots of provisions and all snuggled up together and watched movies. We had a brilliant few days xx

Emmamaryd · 27/02/2019 22:06

Plenty of memories of snow days. One time it snowed and all of the other children got sent home. Our parents were away for the day so we stayed at school with the teachers, caretaker and his son making snowmen till mum and dad got home and collected us.

baconbap · 27/02/2019 22:34

were out in a downpour - rushed into a café to shelter - now one of our favourite cafes

cathyov · 27/02/2019 22:58

So lucky as brought up on the Somerset Levels and lots of rain meant flooding down on the moors and great excitement for my children as my father would take a canoe out on the moors. I feel privileged my children got to enjoy what I did as a child and relieved they did not drown on those 'ditches'!

We had been waiting all year for our first family holiday, we were all excited to arrive, but within a couple of hours it started snowing! We thought the holiday would be spoilt but when the kids saw snow for the first time and discovered snowmen and sledging it turned into the best holiday ever!

HomeEdRocks18 · 28/02/2019 08:02

We went to the beach last year as we live a short drive away. It was glorious sunshine when we arrived and chose our spot to sit on. We had our towels, umbrellas, a radio, cozzies etc
We were there about an hour when suddenly the sky went grey and big clouds filled the skies. The beach emptied, people were running off the beach. We just sat there and enjoyed having the beach to ourselves. We were wet anyway from being in the sea so didn't want to go home just yet. People were laughing and pointing at us, but it didn't matter as we were having fun. My daughter is 6 and tells people she meets about our rainy beach day

Lucas is a proper snowflake and won't go out in the rain lol. Rainy days do result in some of the most fabulous Hot Wheel tracks, marble runs and Lego creations ever though!

robyn297 · 28/02/2019 11:27

A few weeks ago, we were sick of being stuck indoors, so we dressed the kids up warm, got everyone's wellies and decided to go for a drive and a walk. We ended up in Bingly at the five rise locks, we started walking, it started to snow! The kids had a brilliant time trying to catch the snowflakes in their mouths. We had a lovely day and on the way home my son even remarked it was better than playing Playstation :-o

molly57 · 28/02/2019 11:43

Having just had surgery it was difficult to walk the dog in the snow but the fact that I did it was an achievement and adventure.

VickyRsuperstar · 28/02/2019 16:04

We held my son's birthday party picnic in the local park one hot September day and all his school friends came, unfortunately right at the end, the heavens opened with torrential rain. While some kids left, many kids (with their parents there) spent a good hour running round in the rain being crazy and having fun getting wet and being silly in the park as the temperature was still very warm. It's a birthday party we still remember years and years later for all the silliness and high jinks of being allowed to run around in the rain. It certainly didn't spoil the day!

jayjaylmdjs · 28/02/2019 16:19

A beach bbq in North Berwick followed by Ice Cream in Musselburgh. But the rain came in quickly extinguishing our bbq. We made up for it by going to Port Seaton and playing in the amusements which was a lot of fun also.

HelenSw4les · 28/02/2019 16:32

We once went on holiday to East Anglia; it was the summer but had rained for days and on the way there, we went through a puddle that was in a dip that we didn't see and the water came up and over the bonnet of the car and the windscreen. The children thought it was great fun, like riding the Log Flume at a theme park, luckily the weather brightened up and we had a wonderful stay.

Bellroyd · 28/02/2019 22:12

I remember a childhood picnic when holidaying with my family in Northumberland. Arrangements had been made to hire a minibus and take a tour of favourite spots, stopping en route for a picnic lunch.

As is often the case in this part of the country, the weather was at best mixed and on this particular day, it was particularly gusty. We stopped on what we thougnt was a sheltered spot beside a disused stone bridge and we huddked down in the shelter of the parapet at the top. The ladies laid out the plates of food on the top of the hall and we were to help ourselves.

However, we had scarcely begun before the whole lot was swept off the parapet and down into the river below. It was really funny at the time and we had to stop at a chippy on the way home, as we were starving.

It's a popular "Do you remember when......?" anecdote even now, 50 years on!

Great memories of being at legoland when it literally rained all day. We got soaked through but still remember the day well as the place was empty and we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Staff were extra helpful and friendly and all that were there were like 1 big family.

emmagough78 · 28/02/2019 23:35

We had our first family holiday together in france! - it poored down hard. We were in tents and the back of the tent flooded. We did find lots of ways to keep entertained in our tents though by discovering new card games! :D
