NOW CLOSED

Sometimes the thought of rain or heavy wind on a day out can make us want to stay indoors and curl up with a film. But, if bad weather catches you by surprise it might even turn your day out into an adventure. Arla Big Milk would like to hear about the adventures you’ve had because of bad weather.

Here’s what Arla Big Milk has to say: “We know how important it is to get your little explorers out in the world around them, so we’ve partnered with Magic Light to bring you yearlong BIG Adventures. We’re also running an on pack monthly prize draw, available across UK grocery retailers, to give you the chance to win an amazing trip to Chessington World of Adventures Resort. Helping to fuel these BIG Adventures, Arla Big Milk is simply fresh whole milk that’s enriched with essential nutrients. So, if you want to join in on the adventure rain or shine, come visit our site to explore activities for your half term.”

Have you raced to find shelter in the woods when you’ve encountered an unexpected downpour? Perhaps you’ve embraced the rain and gone puddle jumping with your children? Maybe you’ve seen a new side to nature when you’ve been out in the wind and rain? Share below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

In the summer we went for a picnic in the forest. Almost as soon as we started eating the heavens opened and it chucked it down! Luckily we weren't too far from the car! I think the girls found it more fun eating the picnic inside the car!

The first time we went to Disneyland Paris the weather was a little bit like it is here in the UK - changeable to say the least! One minute it was bright sunshine, the next really heavy downpours. As we were there with our 2 year old and 5 year old children for just a short break we headed out every time the sun shone. One particular day we were in the park and it absolutely bucketed down and the wind started howling. We sheltered under a bridge but the kids were in tears and I was close! We decided to go into the closest restaurant, which - looking at the menu was one we didn't fancy, but it was warm and dry so we went in and ordered. It was the Ratatouille restaurant, the food was nothing to write home about but the entertainment was so much fun! And something we hadn't expected. The little mouse from the film was there singing and popping out from under a silver serving dish while we ate. Even my autistic son managed a smile. By the time we came out of the restaurant we all felt better and it was nothing to do with the food or the weather. It's something we still talk about to this day - 8 years on.

We got stuck in a torrential downpour during a holiday in Mexico. It turned out to be one of the best days of our holiday though, as we spent the day in the hotel bar playing games, watching movies and enjoying quality time together.

I remember camping in the rain - yet we had great fun

sweir1 · 16/02/2019 22:16

I remember camping when little and bad weather blowing our tent on to the fire. We stayed in the nicest hotel that night.

We took the family down to Bournemouth hoping for a lovely day on the beach, but it rained so much we decided to go into the Aquarium, we spent a good few hours there and then came out for a bite to eat,. They gave us a pass so we could come back to see the rays get fed. We all had a fantastic day, much better than a day on the beach

I remember when we were little we went on holiday to the Isle of Wight for a week, it rained the whole week and unfortunately my mum had only packed summer clothes. There are lots of photos of us in our jelly shoes and summer dresses soaked to the bone! It didn’t seem to stop us from going to all the attractions and we still laugh about it now.

Ok, so my story is more of a “change of plan” but we all remember the amazing snow January 2010....well i personally remember the exact date..the 5th January 2010 and my boys first birthday. All the family were going to drive up (to Manchester) from Derbyshire after work, dinner was booked, cake was being delivered, we were having a big family party. On opening the curtains that morning and shock took me over....SIX INCHES OF SNOW! My emotions flip flopped so fast it’s a wonder I didn’t pass out! OMG SNOW (elation) FREDDIES BIRTHDAY PLANS (gutted) NO WORK (back to elation) hahaha....all plans were cancelled and replaced with the best birthday snow day a little boy could wish for....when I lay down with him in the snow he couldn’t stop laughing it was soooo funny....we walked and played in the snow, got cozy and warm, went back out and made a snowman, came back, cake was cancelled so I made a cheap chocolate Victoria sponge and Freddie smeared it all over his face. It’s one of my happiest memories. I will treasure it.

we had a day out at the beach and the weather turned really nasty suddenly. There was a huge storm and whilst running back to the car i twisted my ankle and we spent the rest of the day in A& E!!

WE Wwent to London a few years ago. Ir rained so hard that even my underwear was wet, and my makeup ran. The children did nt care and we just ploughed on ( 2 x 4, 5, 9 ). A few months ago, we were talking about holidays and all the children ( now in their 20s ) all remembered the holiday but none of them remembered it raining

Last year, we had just set off for school when snow flakes started to fall. By the time we got to school it was snowing heavily and with the forecast for heavy snow for the day, the school decided to close and we all came home. Quick change of clothes, dug out our sledges and we went to the local park. We thought it would be really busy but there were only a couple of other people there. We had the best day sledging, we went exploring over the other side of the park onto the golf course and there were lots of dips which the kids loved sledging into and getting buried by the snow! We are very disappointed we have not had a repeat of the snow this year.

bryonywilson91 · 17/02/2019 12:22

We always love a family bike ride, but one year my husband actually fell off his bike and sprained his ankle! We were in the middle of no where with the kids and had to try and hobble to our closest pub for safety.

Doodygirl2009 · 17/02/2019 12:45

Last year when we had a lot of snow my kids school was shut down for two days instead of been at school all in went sledging and had a lot more fun

A thread right up my street. Yay!!!

I have so many favourite weather incidents, but one of mine was when we were at Brands Hatch and we had an absolutely almighty storm. We took shelter in a very posh hospitality tent. It didn't stay posh when floods of water torrented through it and we had a lightning strike very very close. A waitress screamed and dropped her tray. It was awesome.

I was also on a train that got stranded by a mega storm. Massive lightning strike as we were halted. Everyone around us screamed. I got a fit of the giggles. Everyone stared at me.

The time we had to abandon our tent in the middle of the night when we were camping on top of a cliff was not so fun. Confused

A family visit to beach, a walk down the pathway that meandered down the cliff into a beautiful sandy cove, sandcastles, writing in the sand, races, stone skimming .....then the weather took a sudden turn for the worst and a few drops of rain built very quickly to a really heavy downpour! The pathway we used, although a proper path was quickly becoming treacherous to walk back up and became quite dangerous. Once back up the top we ran for cover and then heard the loudest rumble and crashing noise. We got into the caravan we were renting as emergency vehicles arrived on the site - Chaos reined and after about an hour when the rain stopped we discovered there had been a landslide into the cove we had been in!!!

IonaAilidh11 · 17/02/2019 18:57

last time it snowed we had to cancel plans for town and got the sledges out and ended up having a better day than planned

dannydog1 · 17/02/2019 18:59

On a visit to Chester zoo it rained so heavily that the dye in our jeans turned our legs blue. However, the animals loved it, and consequently saw far more out in their enclosures than usual.

sootyo · 17/02/2019 19:40

It was so hot and sunny last summer , that going out had to be early or late afternoon, unless a shady spot was found.

allsorts4444 · 17/02/2019 20:01

On bonfire night we decided to buy some chips from the local chip shop, grab some blankets and choccies and drive to the top of the mountain. On top is a great view of all the villages so we could eat and enjoy everyone's fireworks. Just as we were about to leave we realised that the bad rain we had had that weekend had made the ground very wet and muddy and unfortunately we got the car stuck in the mud! Not just us but another 5 cars too who all had the same idea. Luckily one of the cars was a 4x4 and they managed to tow all of us out. It was a very fun adventure :)

We braved a seaside visit between Christmas and New Year and it was so windy but great fun :) The pier was open so ice creams were brought but went everywhere which my daughters thought was hilarious! It was a really enjoyable day and certainly blew the post-Christmas blues away!

Lisapaige24 · 17/02/2019 20:13

Embrace the weather it’s Britain after all my children love nothing better that nature and a good puddle to jump in

katrinao · 17/02/2019 20:18

A caravan holiday in Aberystwyth was cold and rainy until the wind blew the glass door and we were upgraded to a fancy caravan. My boys were wrapped up and had a great time at the beach, warming up later in the wee local cinema

Sunbathing in Thailand... started raining so let's go swimming!

Dormouse1940 · 17/02/2019 20:53

We like camping, so you kind of have to accept you're going to get rained on at some point! One memorable weekend we went to the New Forest- gorgeous- but then suddenly the heavens opened and didn't stop. The campsite went from a picturesque haven to Atlantis within a couple of hours, with sheets of standing water EVERYWHERE.
Our 2 year old was not perturbed and equipped with his welly boots had the best fun splashing and paddling and dabbling sticks in the water. Turns out it was one of the best trips ever-and the weather was to blame!

Went on holiday last year and whilst there my hubby was desperate to go to the German grand prix, as our daughter always sides with daddy we got the train and it was a lovely sunny day. Unfortunately the heavens opened right at the end of the race, and the surrounding village flooded meaning we were stuck there for about an hour before having to find our way to the town on foot. Gone 10 when we arrived back at our accommodation still soaked to the bone. My daughter still talks about how we 'escaped' from the race!
