NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

I was only laughing about catch and kiss the other day! If my boyfriend Bobby and I ever got caught then it was game over for anyone else as we would only catch and kiss each other...at 5 years old! Haha! So funny at that age.

Lots of handstands and cartwheels if not skipping with a huge rope. Happy days!

Wow what an amazing initiative
To raise money & do something positive
One of the ones I played of course
Was what's the time Mr Wolf
We also had so much fun playing stuck in the mud
& shared more than a joke with the big skipping rope
British Bulldog was another fave
So many great outdoor games that we played
Most have crossed the generations
Albeit with little variations
I think it's so important that time is made to play outside
& not constantly inside getting square eyes
Children outside together having old fashioned fun whatever the weather
My girls are following on from me playing together & burning off their energy
Here's hoping your winner's me & 💙Thanks for the opportunity💙

I remember playing a form of KissChase in the last year of infant school, where I think it was always girls chasing the boys and then they had to hold their hands on this one particular windowsill until they were freed by another boy, the thing was, I seem to remember that I was the only one allowed to kiss the boys! I got my comeuppance though as all my boyfriends dropped me like a hot brick when we moved to junior school as my mum had got a new job as their teacher!

mummyb2017 · 03/02/2019 23:09

Skipping and duck duck goose always firm playground favourites which my daughter also loves playing

tinald · 03/02/2019 23:10

whats the time Mr Wolf and British Bulldog, Pom Pom 123, stuck in the mud, Conkers. were a few of the games I can remember playing

NatureIs · 03/02/2019 23:19

I used to love playing 123 in, What's the Time Mr. Wolf, Granny's Footsteps, Stuck in the Mud etc. We'd make games up with whatever ball we had, usually an old netball and if we were allowed out the front we'd watch the frogs in the pond or make daisy chains!

Couldn't go wrong with elastic, which I think is also called French skipping? It seems crazy now to think how long that would amuse us for!

I know this is a sponsored thread but if anybody is interested in learning more about children's play, I can thoroughly recommend the life time work of opie and opie. www.theguardian.com/books/2017/oct/25/iona-opie-obituary
This is just an article but they did so much research that is so interesting.
