NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

Hopscotch and skipping games

sofieellis · 01/02/2019 08:24

Clapping games, tig, hopscotch, also I remember standing in a circle and singing with alternating people in the middle.

I was always rubbish at group skipping (I loved skipping by myself) and elastics, I always ended up tripping or stopping the rope!

At secondary school, it was mainly about standing around, looking cool!

I was unbelievably lucky at school because my school had an outdoor swimming pool. We obviously had swimming lessons but in summer we were also allowed to swim at lunchtime if there was a teacher available to be lifeguard. We used to play 'water polo'. At least, that's what we called it. In reality it was just throwing a ball at someone else and trying to get the biggest possible splash.
Daisy is now 8 and doesn't go to the school I went to, however her class is taken swimming once a week. They don't have their own pool though. It probably wouldn't be allowed now for health and safety reasons!

Kelcig · 01/02/2019 19:48

Kiss chase, British Bulldog, French skipping, 'The Beatles' where we pretended to be one of the beatles or their then girlfriends. Mixing witches brews in the holes in tree trunks

HelenSw4les · 01/02/2019 22:02

Skipping with a double rope was one of my favourites in the playground as a child, also elastics around our legs, sorry I forget what they were called too, it was like cat's cradle but on our feet.

I loved the game which we you could play on your own or with friends. You throw the ball in the air and clap. The most claps win.

lota100 · 02/02/2019 09:28

My fave games in the school playground were the skipping rope, and that game where you have 2 balls in the one hand and then throw one at the wall then the next ball and catch one at a time can’t remember name of it. And also the girls loved doing hand stands though I wasn’t too good at that.

My daughter played kiss chase tut tut and had a little group of girls who would sing and choreograph a little dance routine

Janie1616 · 02/02/2019 09:31

We loved skipping, hopscotch, jacks, catch, tag, leapfrog, handstands, hide and seek, cats cradle, conkers, rolling down the hill first to the bottom wins!

happyone · 02/02/2019 09:32

I loved playing elastics which consisted of elastics round two friends ankles which you had to jump over and it slowly got higher from ankle to above the knees lol
