NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

I absolutely loved skipping, sometimes with two long ropes and running in and out. I also remember playing hopscotch, tag and stuck in the mud.

Kerby - me and our neighbours spent hours bouncing the ball across the road trying to hit the opposite kerb. It was such a simple game but lots of fun.

French skipping (with elastic round our ankles) Hopscotch, Two Balls (up against the wall) and also the thing with a tennis ball in a leg cut off from old tights which we used to swing between our legs, up against the wall! What on earth was that called? Nothing that cost much to do! Used to love making up scrap books, they were cheap from Woolworths and we filled them with photos of holidays cut out of travel brochures. Feel really old now, so different to now.

Ahh good old hopscotch! Used to love making my own with chalk as well :) I don’t remember playing much else in the playground, other then tag! Some of the games posted on here sound like they were lots of fun! :)

Hopscotch

marymod · 02/02/2019 11:40

Hopscotch was a favourite, as we had that printed on the playground, whereas at home we just used chalk on the pavement. Skipping, IT (a form of chase), Statues and clapping games.

british bulldog!! pretty sure its banned in schools now but was always great fun running back and forth trying not to get caught!

ali1233 · 02/02/2019 13:01

It's a sad fact that most games we used to play and have fun with are now banned from school ,for health and safety reasons. My children hood years were full of fun at playtimes, because everyone got involved and we all laughed together. Besides, football, marbles, the dinner ladies used to hold a huge rope were we all jumped over. higher and higher was the favourite. and does anyone remember claping hands together and singing when Susie was a babie a babie susie was. What time is it Mr Wolf was a huge success and everychild ran across the play ground to the other side, hoping not to get caught, amid squeals of laughter. Sadly this fun is lacking in our schools today, as my son often says he is bored at playtime, we were never bored.

We used to play a game called Red Rover - great fun until one of us broke our arm! Good old It was a firm favourite too, even better if you convinced the boys to play too!

inbetween44 · 02/02/2019 14:47

cazhow · 02/02/2019 15:01

aspella · 02/02/2019 15:56

Blondie1982 · 02/02/2019 16:43

Kiss chase

Bubbles2002 · 02/02/2019 17:37

Witch's in the well

tiggsy34 · 02/02/2019 17:37

Hopscotch was my favourite, so much so that I got into trouble for chalking my own on the pavement outside our house.

I didn’t see the problem, it washed away in the rain.

Stash01 · 02/02/2019 17:40

Used to love playing Block. It was like a cross between statues and tig. You had to sneak up on whoever was counting and not move whilst they were looking.

avery64 · 02/02/2019 17:41

Very strict classroom regime so at playtimes we let rip! Anything that meant you had to run, shout and throw yourself about was the perfect anti-dote. No actual rules (except unspoken ones that everybody seemed to know and abide by) This was in the days when teachers spent breaks in the staffroom rather than the playground. We only saw one if someone was badly hurt.

Laurajanew · 02/02/2019 18:01

I loved hopscotch and although I was terrible hula hooping

morgan05 · 02/02/2019 18:05

I loved playing with a tennis ball in a sock while singing songs or playing 4 square or hopscotch I can even remember playing kiss chase which chased of all the boys when they were annoying lots of clapping games like who stole the apple from the old apple tree I can also remember some of the games were played by so many kids like whakers or 40 40 but what I most remember was the feeling of freedom without pressure we played like kids at school and in the streets

katiefish · 02/02/2019 18:19

Loved what’s the time mr wolf
