NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

One of my Favourite playground games I loved as a child was Rounders, which was so much fun. Rounders stands out from other sports and can encourage those least active pupils into physical activity through enjoyment and sociability. Rounders is a cross-generational, cross-gender game that embraces all abilities and fulfils a key indicator within the curriculum. It develops confidence, it’s all about teamwork! No-one gets singled out and no-one is left unacknowledged. It can be played all year round too. Thanks for the Giveaway!

I loved sharks and fishes, giant steps and baby steps and on those rare nights when the weather was nice: rounders at our local park. Ah memories!

Kick Can, put a can in the middle of a circle, who ever is on has to retrieve the can which has been kicked and put it back in the circle meanwhile, every body has to hide, when spotted you have to stay in the circle, when everybody is caut, the games over, but you can get everybody ont of the circle if not spotted by licking the can again, it could take all day. first one spotted is the next one on.

Loved skipping alone or skipping games in a group. We also played lots of tag and marbles

Pimmpom · 03/02/2019 17:11

Loved Hopscotch and Queenie Queenie Who's Got the Ball? Loved showing my children these games x

grafter6 · 03/02/2019 17:32

Hopscotch, skipping, Mr Wolf, kiss catch, elastics, oranges & lemons, jacks were what we played in Junior school. The only time I went on the stilts was when it was games lesson. I hated rounders. So occasionally the teacher would let me stay in the playground on the stilts while the rest of the kids were playing rounders up on the field

Kizzyma · 03/02/2019 17:50

Instead of kiss chase we played ‘knicker chase’. If the boys caught you they called pull up your skirt. Can you imagine that now?

kats56 · 03/02/2019 17:58

My favourite playground games were skipping, hopscotch and rounders.

I loved autumn because playing conkers was just the best. Remember soaking them in vinegar or putting them in the oven ?

Elephant105 · 03/02/2019 18:19

French elastic, hopscotch, skipping and British bulldog were all favourites of mine

Emmamaryd · 03/02/2019 18:24

I liked hopscotch, what's the time mr wolf? And British Bullog.

Bellroyd · 03/02/2019 18:26

The school was small so the girls played with the boys - mostly football or tag. Later on, there were a couple of special games behind the bike shed - but all sweet and innocent really - only kissing.

phillw · 03/02/2019 18:26

British bulldog and IT!

alohavic70 · 03/02/2019 18:43

British Bulldog was the one that always got me into the playground!

fitmum11 · 03/02/2019 19:05

KISS-CHASE I was such a fast runner at primary school. I feel so sorry for those poor boys now!

paulinebU · 03/02/2019 19:38

We played skipping mainly with a huge rope so that more than one person could skip at a time. We played What's The Time Mr. Wolf. We also played two ball against the wall. We played singing games - The big ship sails through the Alley Alley O, The Farmer's in his Den, There was a black dog sat on a tin roof and Bingo was his name. I'm sure there were many more that I've forgotten. We were never bored

womblelancs · 03/02/2019 20:17

We used to play 'elastics' - but we usually used a couple of pairs of tights tied together to jump over. 'Twobie' was what we called juggling with tennis balls up against a wall - I had a go at it a few weeks ago and found that I could still do it quite well, underhand, overhand, under the leg, round the waist. Yep, I've still got it!

baconbap · 03/02/2019 20:33

We had a boys versus girls game for possession of a tennis ball. Sutiable for everyone as you could be in the thick of it or on the edges. Was banned by the teachers as the girls were too rough.

abrahkath · 03/02/2019 20:52

We used to play "Charlie's Angels", popular at the time (1976?), on a helicopter type climbing frame in the playground. I always wanted to be one of The Angels (Sabrina was my favourite) but was always cast as Bosley. Guess I was just a bit too plain to be an angel!
Hopscotch was the other fave 😊

Radley1 · 03/02/2019 21:00

What's the time Mr Wolf and Fairies and Giants

Tanros · 03/02/2019 21:04

Whats the time mr wolf, stuck in the mud, and bulldog - before it was banned! My boys love playing football or using the schools adventure trail

pintsized19 · 03/02/2019 21:19

Skipping with the big ropes so 3 or 4 of us could join in, bulldog and what time is it mr wolf were my favourite playground games!

emmagough78 · 03/02/2019 21:19

play ground games were a lot rougher when I was a kid and most have them have now been banned, bull dogs was a game I used to play and one that has now been banned. I understand this, my younger brother got knocked down and broke his elbow playing this game..oops! My favourite playground game was skipping with a long rope where groups of kids skipped together, oh that and twang! - brilliant games and very energetic. sad that lots of been banned now.

frasus · 03/02/2019 21:51

We used to play two ball, hopscotch and skipping
