NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

loved playing tag hopscotch and french skipping

andreaca · 02/02/2019 18:58

We used to play "Whats the time Mr Wolf", knocky nine doors ( cant believe I`ve owned up to that one, obviously not at school though, just in my street ), juggling 2 balls on the wall, hopscotch, clackers, I always hurt my hands, but my favourite was marbles, I had a great big bag of weird and wonderful marbles, we used to swap.

ickle0ne · 02/02/2019 19:46

I loved hopscotch, hula hooping and skipping (by myself and in a group). I'd love these to be resurrected!

Debs1965 · 02/02/2019 19:49

It was a long time ago! But the games we played were French skipping,
British bulldog, kiss chase! then later with tiny, but very high powered bouncy balls.

keithymon88 · 02/02/2019 20:04

As a group game, I used to love playing British Bulldog, getting sweaty and bumped around was great, as long as it didn`t get too rough! A more sedentary game, usually played with just one or two others was that old traditional game of Marbles. I used to have favourites among the many rolling about in my little pouch and, to me, they were as precious as jewels.

I remember the make-believe play the best. A boy in my class would be doctor who and I was one of the assistants!

Kangakate · 02/02/2019 20:40

Elastics, British Bulldog, What’s the time Mr Wolf, Thundercats

giddyypixie · 02/02/2019 20:42

Hide and seek was a big one for us, would go on for hours!

UNDERCOVERDOGG · 02/02/2019 20:47

We use to play a game called Tap Tap In.. but we called it 40 40 as well, basically it was like Tig but with a home-base loved it and played all over the estate

TLAF · 02/02/2019 21:06

I grew up in Israel where we used to play outdoors every single day. My favourite game was "road signs" where one group has a head start and left marks/clues for second team to find its hideout. Ca last hours!

matty44 · 02/02/2019 21:22

Jumping with elastic used to keep us entertained

Brandypie · 02/02/2019 22:10

'The farmer's in his den' - when I was in the last year of primary it felt as if we literally had every kid in school on the school field creating the circle for this game!
Others: What time is it, Mr Wolf?, British Bulldog, Cat's cradle, Tag, Ring a' Ring o' Roses, clapping games and one we called Jockeys on Horses!

Jocelynne123 · 02/02/2019 22:11

Stuck in the mud, what time is it mr fox and bulldog. I was so sad the day bulldog was banned in our school. I loved skipping and hop scotch as well. Xx
