NOW CLOSED

Unicef UK are launching this years Soccer Aid Playground Challenge and would love to hear about the playground games you used to play at school and what games your children play now. The playground is the highlight of the school day where children can burn off all their energy and play with their friends; share below what you loved to play when you were at school and if any of the games have passed down generations.

Here’s what Unicef has to say: “This year, we’re asking all schools across the UK to join us for the Soccer Aid Playground Challenge to help raise money to help give more children around the world a childhood full of play. The idea is simple – teachers team up with their pupils, design an obstacle course that they will take on together, and fundraise to help children in danger in June 2019. Ask your school to sign up here and we’ll send everything you need for kick off - including fundraising and teaching resources to bring Soccer Aid to life for the whole school.”

Alex, Head of Sports for St Dunstan’s RC Primary School, Manchester says: “The Playground Challenge was the perfect way to get the whole school together for a great cause. Everyone (including staff!) had the best time raising money to help children all over the world.”

So what playground games did you love as a child? Were you Queen of hopscotch? Or perhaps you practised your circus skills with stilts? Maybe you created your own playground football league or were seriously skilled at skipping? Do you know if your children still play the same games now at school?

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list)

Thanks and good luck!

Loved Hoola hooping with friends a real craze then also hopscotch and jacks a game with a small ball

beccyr36 · 03/02/2019 07:37

I loved hopscotch and rounders.

Blackah · 03/02/2019 08:01

Hopscotch was a big one, although no pre-printed layout, we had to do it with chalk!

wendymalone · 03/02/2019 08:18

Elastics was always my favourite

trachiedave · 03/02/2019 08:53

Marbles was our game in the Yard Strict rules from day one.Wow it was Hard.

Leanfun · 03/02/2019 09:16

Skipping is the one I remember most. Spent ours at it with friends.

cathyov · 03/02/2019 10:01

Before the days of safety; our village school had a great climbing frame swinging bars, swings and skipping ropes and elastic were a must. Now safety is always the priority and the playgrounds have so many more children in there is not so much space which does make things more difficult but I made sure my girls knew how to play 'elastic' so feel I have passed down one important game even if they can only play at home!

I used to love playing British Bull dogs, What time is it Mr Wolf, skipping, Blind Man Buff, tiggy off ground. I now work as a midday supervisor and unfortunately most of these games are now banned.
We now have a book with games in for the younger children that we teach, we also have a reading corner, buddy bench and now have music outside so children can make up dances and put on a little show.
Football is still a favourite with most of the children and Tig.
I think it's a shame children are missing out on group games, learning how to play together, share and make new friends. lots of children need an adult to show them how to play.

Somethingorother82 · 03/02/2019 10:22

There were skipping ropes out every playtime and I loved either skipping on my own or playing double dutch. Not sure I could keep up nowadays though!

lanny3 · 03/02/2019 10:39

I remember the teacher giving us the ends of the chalk to mark out a Hopscotch grid, and we used a really long washing line for Skipping, it was lots of fun when we skipped in pairs and threes, and even more. We also played a lot of running games like tag, and British Bulldog. These sort of games were somewhat natural and instinctive, we didn't need any specialist equipment to play really, although I would have loved to have the option to just sit and read some days, that was never allowed back then; no books were allowed outside.

molly57 · 03/02/2019 10:42

Bebs. Not sure what it is called these days. A grid of numbers chalked onto the ground. You throw a stone into a square and then skip through the squares to reach it.

Flapdoodles · 03/02/2019 10:48

Hopscotch was a favourite of mine along with clapping songs, skipping and bulldog. My children love playing dodgeball on the playground at school.

JayJay1874 · 03/02/2019 11:53

tig or tag whatever you call it down your way, british bulldog before it was outlawed then it defaulted to football for eternity.

herbertappleby · 03/02/2019 12:15

'off ground touch' was a one of the most enjoyed when I was at school but, football topped everything else by a long shot.

chris8888 · 03/02/2019 12:27

I loved all the skipping challenges we used to do, like how many times you can jump. Two balls was good to play too and kick the can which was a bid like hide and seek. Statues was fun but I am surprised any of us survived some of the balancing games we played.

zlb33 · 03/02/2019 12:30

we used to have stretchy elastic and jump and play games make up rhymes and rules

Tawny0wl · 03/02/2019 12:36

What's the time Mr Wolf
Skipping games with 2 people holding a long rope either end and 2/3 people jumping in
British Bulldog
Various Handstands/headstands, walking handstands and going right over into a crab and then back over into a handstand
Hide and seek with people and with objects
Tree climbing (even though we were not allowed too!)
Piggy back racing
All sorts of clapping games
Oranges & Lemons
Kiss chase
Stuck in the mud

grannybiker · 03/02/2019 12:43

Lots of skipping games or ones with that long elastic wrapped around 2 people's ankles that you jump in and out of.
Our favourites were the chasing or creeping games - What's the Time Mr Wolf? Please Mr Crocodile.. etc.
Games like Bulldog / Red Rover were a great source of scraped knees and seem to have survived for our own children. They've got around it being banned in their playground by changing the name! Wish we'd have thought of that, LOL!

Mcd98068 · 03/02/2019 13:38

I used to play 5 a side football,Tag rugby.I also played lots of other great games at school like skipping,Nit chase,Skipping, elastics, cops and robbers, hop scotch,Stick in the mud,Kerry etc

blue25 · 03/02/2019 13:48

British Bulldog and hitting a tennis ball against a wall!

clarabella12 · 03/02/2019 14:48

what's the time Mr wolf and hopscotch

cathryn1 · 03/02/2019 15:34

British bulldog, chase, tag and skipping

tishist · 03/02/2019 15:50

I liked skipping but wasn't very good at it! Nor anything too physical, like headstands, cartwheels. I preferred re-enacting Star Wars!

EsmeeMerlin · 03/02/2019 15:55

We loved skipping, british bull dog, tag, sticky glue when you were frozen if you were caught and had to wait for someone to run under your arms to unfreeze you, what time mr fox.

I also remember making up dances with friends and doing lots of clapping songs.

DimensionAEB · 03/02/2019 16:08

I lived in a house that had a huge woodland area behind it. We spent ages building forts and dens in the undergrowth, as well as lots of games of hide and seek!
