Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I use a spray and I'm happy to try whatever happens to be on offer.

My daughter uses a spray too and usually I buy her the smaller cans that can go in her school bag. We didn't have a particular chat about using deodorant it was just when she began senior school I began to buy it for her.

strawberrisc · 09/09/2018 17:17

I have never found a spray deodorant that doesn't leave white marks.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/09/2018 17:21

I but Mitchum antiperspirant - it is the most effective one I have found - I never suffer BO using it, which I used to, when using other products.

The other thing I like is that it comes in an unfragranced option - so I can use different perfumes - I have never found a perfumed antiperspirant/deodorant that I thought had a nice perfume - proper perfume is just so much nicer, in my opinion.

When the dses hit adolescence and needed to deal with underarm sweat, we chose products that were antiperspirants as well as deodorants. Unfortunately for us, they all went through the teenage boy phase of loving Lynx - when it is being liberally applied, you can literally taste it three rooms away, through closed doors! I called it weaponised fragrance!

All three are adults now, and choose their own deodorants but if they ask me, I recommend Mitchum because it is so effective at keeping my underarms dry.

If Dove produced an unfragranced antiperspirant, that was as effective as the one I use (which claims 48 hour effectiveness, though I apply daily so can’t verify that claim in my usage), I would try it.

For me, what matters most is if a product works - keeps my underarms dry all day, even in the hot weather.

My eldest son chose a spray on for his first deodorant but as hes gotten older hes changed to a roll on for added coverage. I advised him to do this. He still uses the spray on as well as he likes the smell.
I use a roll on.

MillyVanilli222 · 09/09/2018 17:30

Mine's too young to use it yet - but I have memories of using my mums Mitchum roll-on as an early teenager! Nowadays I use Dove, as the roll-ons dry quickly and give great protection.

My daughter had to try several before she found one that suited her. I hate the yellow stains they leave though!

mamof3boys · 09/09/2018 17:51

I've just had to start encouraging my boys to wear deodorant as my older two have got to that stinky stage. They love to wear Adidas or Lynx as they feel more grown up! I still have to remind them to put it on every day.

meepmoop79 · 09/09/2018 18:20

Our eldest has now reached the stage where frequent showers and washes are required. We provide him with deodorant, and have advised him when and how to use it.

poppysocks90 · 09/09/2018 18:27

I use Dove deodorant as I find they don't leave those awful white marks, they smell beautiful and do the job on a hot/cold day! My skin remains soft even with a regular razor use.

YearOfYouRemember · 09/09/2018 18:31

I used to buy a lot of dove stuff as I stupidly fell for the , makes skin soft etc. I've been educated now and I buy Sure stick. I prefer roll ons but they take too long to dry. Would never buy sprays.

Marg2k8 · 09/09/2018 18:31

My children are adult now. I cannot honestly remember when I introduced them to using deodorant, or any issues.

Blainalass · 09/09/2018 18:31

As others have said, the conversations were more around cleanliness - deodorant is not a substitute, though it's needed in some circumstances.

arat · 09/09/2018 19:20

99% of the time I don't use one so, not sure what DCs will think about them. They occasionally see DH using a spray one, eg while on holiday, but they are usually glued to the TV so have never asked about it.

Perfect11 · 09/09/2018 19:25

I use dove spray on deodorant and so does my 12yro son. He’s tried several different spray on deodorants, but prefers the scent of dove. For him, he prefers the light smell, which is not too overpowering. Also, it doesn’t sting when he puts it on, like some others do. I love the smell of dove products in general and really like the clean smell of the deodorant. I can be a stress sweater, which some deodorants don’t control. Dove always seems to though and if I do happen to sweat a bit it still keeps me smelling fresh. In fact, I have a can of deodorant in my car too.. to have a quick spritz if I need to freshen up during the day, if it’s a particularly stressful one! We both prefer spray on to roll on deodorant so we can get dressed immediately after application without having wet armpits leading to marked tops.

Pinkprincess1978 · 09/09/2018 19:41

I buy whatever is on offer roll on wise and don't find too much difference amongst supermarket own brand to branded. I do like a scented one but find there isn't much variety, I would like a citrus scent but have never found one.

My dcs don't need to wear any yet but are both heading into that age range. I will probably buy them the same as we use.

My husband likes spay and those 'invisible' 24 hour spays.

I stopped using spays at school as other girls would take them in the changing rooms and then pass them round and they would come back empty! They didn't want to share roll on for some reason 😂

towser44 · 09/09/2018 19:51

When do children need to start using it? I had this thought the other day as I was putting mine on and my daughter said "Give me a spray Daddy"! I can't remember at all when I started using it.

gd2011 · 09/09/2018 19:57

I only buy cruelty-free and vegan deodorants. I find the Salt of the Earth Natural Deodorant Range from Crystal Spring are the best.

kpdchudleigh · 09/09/2018 20:09

When I first noticed my teenage daughter needed deodorant I purchased some handbag/travel size ones of varying kinds for her to pop in her school bag as a way of opening the dialogue about deodorant use. It engaged her well and was a warmer, friendlier approach than saying she might smell.

xcxcsophiexcxc · 09/09/2018 20:12

I’ve always used dove and probably will continue too ! It what’s great for me !

IKnowWhenThatHotlineBling · 09/09/2018 20:37

We don't buy any particular brand of deodorant, we just go to the shop and choose at the time.

When my daughter first started using deodorant, for some reason, we started with roll-ons but now she uses the aerosol, like me.

Now and again, I do check she is using it regularly and remind her that she will sweat alot, especially with her teenage years and even more so with the recent hot summer we have just had.

We prefer spray but will use roll-on as well.
The scents I use and encourage my daughter to use are the fresh, original, plain smelling sprays. I don't think you can get better than a nice clean smell. I am not a fan of floral, sweet smelling deodorants as if you are suffering with body odour, I think it makes it smell worse.

The most important factor for me is that it smells clean, it helps to prevent body odour and sweat and it doesn't leave a white dust over your clothes. I definitely choose anti-mark deodorants over others.

sophiefx · 09/09/2018 21:07

My daughter is yet to use deodorant as she is young but she definitely takes a keen interest when I spray mine!

I love using an anti-mark one!

freefan · 09/09/2018 21:48

I have always used Dove and prefer the roll on to the spray and have always found it reliable and non marking, so naturally this is the one my daughters now use also. My sons use Lynx as it seems to be the popular one among their friends.

littleme96 · 09/09/2018 21:50

I use a roll on, which doesn't irritate me and is relatively unscented which allows me to wear perfume as the scents don't clash. I look for ones which are fairly cheap, but don't ruin my clothes and work well at keeping me dry and clean smelling all day.

We are not quite at that stage with my daughter yet, but I shall probably look for something natural to begin with.

lhlee62 · 09/09/2018 21:55

I love Dove Original or the pomegranante and lemon, I cannot stand vanilla fragrances. So far the Dove ones have worked really well.

I am quite sensitive to deodorant, I can't stand it when people spray stuff in locker rooms. I have to move out of the room as it just get right down my throat, DH has been banned from using it in the same room as me, I tell him to do it outside!

Bluearmy351 · 09/09/2018 22:22
